GoPro Question
I am considering selling my Hero
and replacing it with a new Hero2.
Do they use the same plastic box?

Re: [GreenMachine] GoPro Question
Yes. Mounting hardware and the box is the same.

Re: [GreenMachine] GoPro Question
Good move. The features and footage quality are well worth the switch.

Re: [GreenMachine] GoPro Question
Since we're talking Gopro, anybody use the Cookie hand mount to base? What do you think? The other mount out there has less snag potential, but the Cookie mount can swivel for different angles.

Re: [Jubal] GoPro Question
Dude,
It's never a good idea to tie up one of your only two good hands with a built in line snag-er . Especially not slider down..... not enough altitude or time to deal with issues any other way than immediately. You might not even be able to stop yourself from reaching up to correct an off heading ....leading to snagging some lines, and spinning in under a perfectly good square canopy.
Just my .02 cents.

Re: [Jubal] GoPro Question
Hookitt Thanks Bro Smile

basehoundsam voices a very real serious risk!
Many newbies take wearing a camera too lightly.
We have had several deaths in both SKY & BASE
from people wearing/distracted by camera.

I have been doing hand-cam video since 2003.
First built my own mount and ran a Sony PC101
which is big and weighs 16 ounces + the glove.

IF a jumper has a bunch of SKY jumps wearing
or doing something, then the cross over to the
BASE environment is a little less dangerous but
still ANY variable adds to risk and complexity.

I have seen and worn a fiberglass cookie mount
but do not think it is worth $200. I made my
latest from a $15 wrist guard, a $8 tripod mount,
and some random bits in my workshop, such as
black shoe-goo, pinch of neoprene for padding.

My custom mount is light, easy to put on, gets
the camera as far from you as your arm/hand
can and allows enough movement to jump/land.

If any one is interested I can post photos of the
actual mount and if you want to see the results
then friend me on Facespace and watch some of
the recent tandem videos. I do BASE jump it on
occasion but rarely get around to editing them.

Crap, I got the clear shoe-goo, is it inferior?

I'd love to see pictures!

Only in color, not in function.

Yes I have. The footage was pretty crappy even though I dialed it in skydiving it a bunch first. It isnt even remotely worth the extra risk for that specific camera angle unless you really just have to have a super cool new facebook photo and exponentially upping the danger of your jump is worth that photo to you. If you really need a handcam mount go with this one: http://www.chutingstar.com/newgear_en/gopro-handcam-glove.html

That's the push I wanted. I already looked at that hand mount you linked, and it presents very little risk, so I'll go with it instead of the Cookie. Thanks.

Id just like to add that I still dont think its worth it though. The only cool/usable shot I ever got from one is right at exit before going into a track. Obviously everyone like pictures of their face but, on big wall stuff at least, you only get that in the first half second on the jump and then the camera angle is crap. I quickly gave up on the handcam in BASE. It is also way more distracting than any other cam. A helmet cam I set and forget it-- the handcam is staring you in the face the entire jump and the weight of the setup does take some getting used to but as always, YMMV.

Re: [Couloirman] Hand-Cam
I agree that a hand cam is useless
for many BASE jumps, adds extra
risk for limited benefit, etc.

Slider-Up I never use a Hand-cam.

I will wear one sometimes for S/L,
especially if I just left the dropzone
and it is the only mount with me.

The $129 looks safer and cheaper
than the $200 but in my opinion
if you are experienced enough to
SKY jump, BASE jump, and wear
a camera then my $25 glove is
probably unlikely to kill you.

Re: [GreenMachine] Hand-Cam
I would buy your glove Green, but I think I can sell the other one to my local DZ after for pretty much my buying price. I only want it for my high jumps off Kjerag, so I can have vid and pictures of my handsome face with the fjord in the background to show to the cuties. I doubt I'd wear it for the more dangerous jumps in Lauterbrunnen.

That totally looks like a beer koozie wrap that I got for free from SunPath at Nationals one year with a cut-out for your thumb and a camera housing.Laugh

A little late chiming in here...but nice tits on photo #5. I don't really have anything productive to add about GoPros.
