Could it be possible to invent some kind of panic button that when pressed would shoot the canopy out? Like in a case you have a problem with deploying be it malfunction or operation error.

With all seriousness though I have wondered about something like a BOC cutaway or something. It obviously wouldn't do anything for the low and dirty, but those wingin it off of places might have an option if they can't find the handle.

I was thinking more like an airbag type solution :D might be a pretty hard opening but it's always better than terminal impact I guess

I thought about this a lot awhile ago. The whole problem is that the complexity just, well, kills the idea.You would need a minimum of 4-5 cables running from the handle.. 2 for the closing loops, 1 for the BOC cutaway, and 1-2 for the spring activation loop. All of this weight and complexity for a remote(astronomical) chance of you missing the pc and somehow having enough time for pulling this handle (and the force required to pull it would be huge).

I completely disagree. Two cables, weaves on the BOC, velcro holds the far end, cables come together and run up the left side to a pillow where the reserve handle would be.

You'd only need to cut away one side of the BOC, but I highly doubt that there would be enough air flowing over the BOC to blow the PC off your back, at least subterminal anyways. Are there any base fatalities from a confirmed hard pull?

  
By cutting away all but the end of the BOC you have less risk of it remaining stowed.

And as far as subterminal, there would be no time to go to an emergency handle so the point is moot. I don't even try to pull high enough to think "hmmm handle" if I miss. I just keep trying to grab shit and chuck shit.

its been previously made for skydiving use . i did some jumps on it with this special cutaway BOC . looked well made , worked good in the ground .
But still if you believe there is a chance of not finding your pull , better not jump that day .

Your problem is mainly wingsuit related, isn't it.

I've seen a prototype, can't remember where though, where the pilot chute was stowed in the right wing and basically held in hand along with the handle-part of the wingsuit. deployment is started by simply letting go of the handle, which is already in clean air. Probably works great in full flight, don't know how it works if your unstable though. Panic = release. Maybe they'll find a way to make it spring-loaded It would be cool, though, if they made a rocket-powered skyhook-system triggered by a panic-button. You could probably get linestretch even if you're just standing still :) Burning canopy, but still linestretch Maybe a spud-gun would work safer. Boooring.

Panic can lead to your demise:

Everyone experiences the unexpected sometimes and it´s part of the learning process to become a solid BASE jumper. Being prepared, trained and aware is the medicine to avoid a panic and react intuitively and correctly.
Panic leads to freezing, over-reacting or plain losing control.

It´s better to press the panic button in your mind before even jumping and thinking through what you would do in case the jump doesn´t go as planned.

I know of at least a few panic reactions of jumpers that ended up in the hospital. This includes pulling too early, unstable and ending up with little to no chance to recover.

i.e. Slipping off the exit and panic pulling, jumping off and panic pulling after an unstable exit, panic pulling in a mediocre track, panic pulling hastily when getting a bit low.

Cutting away the PC-pouch is dumb. If one is in doubt that he can't find or pull the PC - that person should not BASE-jump in the first place.

In case of a knot in the bridle/PC a cutaway for the closing loops might save you. For example on a wingsuitjump, where you still have time to fly after pitching and noticing the hesitation.

This would also be very lightweight and easy to build/use. Could be built from stock skydiving parts.

...but still the opening sequence would be slow and nasty without the help of an inflated PC. So what the fuck. BASE-jumping is by no means mandatory anyway.

IMHO that statement is not always true.
PC is not always your friend and sometimes he do enjoy hide&seek game. For Example all of us can remember even Douggs needing 3 attempts in his "No Pull Find" video... now please go to him and tell him he should quit the game (bring a gopro with u) :P

I don't like to talk about other people and their actions. But still:

1. I'm sure he thought on the exit(and still thinks today) that he CAN find the PC and don't need a cut-away PC-pouch. That's why in my opinion - he should keep on jumping as long as he likes it.

2. He found the PC! Procedure for not finding it, was to look again. This turned out to be effective. In that particular altitude - throwing was a lot more effective than cutting away the BOC.

(Propably had a leg pouch on that jump(?))

I do not wan't to diss the leg pouch, but I personally want to keep the PC monted to a solid peace of rigging and surrounded by spandex.

If somebody thinks the leg puoch is good for them, then it propably is. Same goes the other way around. My point is no-one should jump with gear that they think the cannot operate propably. Anyway, accidents just happen sometimes. It is a sad fact, but doesn't stop us living to the fullest and doing what we love.
