Ah, that brings back memories. That landing was so glamorous. Smile

I'll definitely have to go get a beer with Arvind when I'm in the Bay Area this summer.

Oh, and later, Dwain made a point to clarify that he as a sociopath--not a psychopath. Apparently he was diagnosed as a sociopath by a school psychologist when he was about 10 years old. He seemed a bit proud of it.

He was a complex, fascinating and wonderful person. I shared some really intense times with him, both good and bad. I still miss him.

What in the world is the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath? The terms have overlapping vague definitions, even according to medical professionals.

I have no idea. But it seemed important to him, at the time, in a funny "weird trivia that doesn't matter" Dwain kind of way.

According to my eHarmony personality test, I am classified as a psychopath and am considered unmatchable.

My understanding is that sociopaths have trouble understanding empathy and struggle maintaining relationships where as psychopaths do understand empathy and can maintain relationships, however they feel no remorse for any violence or cruelty they may inflict on others. Also sociopaths are more volatile and may have violent outburst but a psychopath is more calculative and may plan their acts more carefully. But then again I'm not a medical professional so I might be totally wrong.

You know. After reading that a couple of times, it kinda sounds like me. AND if you read it backwards it sounds like Yoda talking.

Well Fuck That's an easy one . The difference between psychopath and a sociopath is pretty close and sometimes hard to see .

But Difference Is & easier for you to see when you are doing a stunt with a shotgun with one of them . A stunt that you have done 'many times' before in the past, 'but' the 1st time with 'one of them', ( psychopath/sociopath ).

To find out difference . You draw a line on the ground explain the rules and tell him to stand there with shotgun and do not cross the line and Do Not move any closer to the target as you count-off the steps on the downrange distance to be shot . ( Me counting-off the steps/distance between us ) Dwain shooter & target being Me ) .

OK: difference is

( psychopath ) - With premeditation & disregarding the set rules . Runs downrange behind you & shoots you in back of Head . killing but claiming it to be an unfortunate accident .

( sociopath ) - 'Dwain' .
With premeditation, Slowly slides forward over the set line about 10-meters closer . As you pace-off the step count downrange with back turned from him . Then when given the call to fire . Shoots you in the back claiming it was an accident being closer to target . 'but' him just wanting to see how close he could get before doing severe bodily damage, & 'Not Really' wanting killing you .
.

edit to add:

Dwain was a fucking kick in the ass to jump with. Got even better jumping when you got to understand him and how his thought process worked .

There Is video somewhere of the Shotgun playtime . We were shooting after jumping & had a guy with us . (non jumper) A guy that was renting a room in Andrea's house ( Andrea was slims wife) & guy was shooting vid. on Dwains Camcorder .
Vid. plainly has audio of the guy telling Dwain, when Dwain was sliding closer downrange & closing some of the gap between us before firing .
guy saying Quote > ..." I don't think this is a good idea ".
Dwain 'sternly' saying . Quote ..." Shut Up ".

Re: [RayLosli] Dwain Flying through the Wires
Psychopath: Picks up dead animals and throws them off exit points.

Sociopath: Asks you if he can use your stash bag to carry the dead animal to the exit point, to keep his own stash bag clean.

Dwain: Convinces you to go first to film the animal's "landing" and then proceeds to throw it directly at your head, cackling maniacally.

You really had to know Dwain to understand this sort of thing. He was a high value person, that's for sure.

Ray, were you here when he convinced that girl that her Chihuahua puppy wanted to make a BASE jump duct taped to his chest strap?

So, Bugs Bunny was a sociopath?

Re: [TomAiello] Dwain Flying through the Wires
No not with the Chihuahua . but been with him on lots of other animal & road kill .
He definitely had a devious streak in him that always started with a smirk on his face . I remember once we were crossing this ice-cold fast moving stream with unpacked gear in stash bags after a jump . Water was only about 3 ft. deep but was ice cold and coming from snow runoff . He crossed first & looked at me as I was making my way across . then grabbed a big tree limb and threw a little up-stream of me to watch it whip down the current and take me out & knock me over .
No one could ever pull lower than him & live . He hated ALL dirty High Pullers & of course for him, there was no better wind-drift to use on a jump . Than a fresh BASE newbe getting told to exit 1st on the load & then watch results to then make a proper safety analysis for his Jump .
He was pretty sharp & sly plus analytical of every aspect on most every Jump & I learned a lot by jumping with him for a few years .
