Re: [kege] Full face helmet
I recently bought the Shred Ready Full Face to try it out and here is what i have found so far after a 17 second delay tracking jump.
The helmet comes as a one size fits all and 3 Padding options. The included pads are very denses and not as comfortable as a Protec helmet out of the box. this is probably because it is intended for water sports. this helmet is extremely light. probably just a hair more then a protec half cab.
The helmet is made for a small to medium size head. I have a small hat size and it is a chore to put my head through the opening while spreading the helmet with the straps. I would imagine a person with a larger head would be very uncomfortable accomplishing this.
I first used the Medium sized pads. Over all it was not uncomfortable to wear by any means but it was a little loose. I chose the medium over the small because the small size were too small (large) and caused a pressure point on my head right above the temple.
When i jumped it as soon as i hit around 7 seconds the wind was forcing the helmet up due to the slight visor lip which was catching the air and how loose it was fitting.
at first i was pretty disappointed that i spent $115 on it but then just decided to modify it and make it fit better and more comfortably.
here is what i did:
-Replaced the front Padding with 1" High Density Foam. I figured adding the foam would essentially fill in the space some and make the helmet fit more snug and also have more surface area that is in contact with my head. I currently have left the rear padding as the factory Small size pad.
- added 6mm rubberized craft foam (same foam that is in my Benny Helmet) over the existing top. the existing top foam is basically a piece of fabric and nothing more. i guess there is no reason for protecting from a top impact in kayaking? you can see it in one of the pictures attached. i modeled the shape after the benny helmet padding. this also made the fit better as it raised the helmet slightly and gave more clearance for the retention system behind the ears.
-Added the same 6mm foam to the chin strap to make it more comfortable.
as for protection i think its about the same as a protec helmet. it is harder to put on and take off with the retention straps but its basically the same ABS shell. one thing to keep in mind is unlike a regular motorcycle full face this helmet has no padding on the cheeks. the only contact it makes with your head is the same contacts as a half cab protec. the face guard has padding but if your face actually ever reaches it (forward/backwards movement) then you either didnt have the chin strap on or you impacted so hard you broke your neck anyway.
I attached a few pics of the helmet and my modifications
all in all the modifications cost me $15 and an hour of my time and the helmet fits great so far. I have not jumped it yet but can already tell there will be much improvement. the most important thing here is now i will look cool and my GoPro will not shake as much.
