Full face helmet
I have done a search on the forums but havent found anything on http://charly-produkte.de/en/helmets.html
I was looking at the no limit helmet, just wondering if anyone has any experience with it.
Thanks

Re: [Dadsy] Full face helmet
Very frequently used in the Hang gliding and Paragliding communities. Lightweight, comfortable, excellent field of vision, fair amount of protection for as light as they are.

Personally, I prefer the Icaro helmets for reasons that may not matter in BASE. I like the fit a tad better, they are quieter when you put a visor on, a bit better aerodynamically. Warning - You want the "Cut" version as the big tail could get caught by a riser and the results would not be pleasant.

Disclaimer: I have base jumped my Icaro 4 Fight Cut and like it. I have not base jumped a Charley helmet.

Re: [Dadsy] Full face helmet
I had a friend take a mild spill long boarding with a no limit on, the whole back of the helmet shattered and he got a concussion. I've got a Charly insider I used to fly paragliders with, and I don't use it anymore, after hearing about that incident, and because I've always thought the build quality is fairly cheap. I could probably snap the chin off with my bare hands. And ontop of all of that, it looks really stupid, and looking cool is the most important part.

Find a good bmx full face helmet, something nice and light though, really heavy helmets can give you neck injuries if your body stops and your head keeps going. (every BASE opening for example) Tongue

I use a Bell Sanction. Light, stylish, sexy, good visibility, well vented, inexpensive, somewhat safe, and totally badass. Anything else is STUPID!

Does it sit secure when at terminal or wing suiting? Does the chin guard protrude? Just need a to replace a factory diver after it had a knock. Thanks

Works for me. I've skydived it and it stayed put, didn't pull or anything. But every head shape is different. I just wear it because it makes me feel cool and every other knucklyhead in my crew wears one somewhat like it. Plus I had a paraglider curb-stomp me a few months ago during an urban speedflight. After that I had a need for a full face. This was the first deal I found and I like it.

Re: [Dadsy] Full face helmet
I would find a place to try it on first. The problem I kept having was that the face portion was to high and blocked my ability to see my legs, leg straps, and feet. I thought it would be unsettling at an exit where I wanted to run and jump precisely, double-check my leg straps, or unfuck a bridle wrap. Probably all in my head but it was enough to make me feel uncomfortable my main feature was a thin and low face guard that allowed me to see down.

I found a new Z1 for $200 US at Cloud 9 Toys, so for that price its worth a try, its the wrong colour as the rest of my ensemble is black and orange, so turning up with a blue helmet will be a bit embarrassing, I will just have to deal with the comments.

Ya if you show up without a matching outfit you will get laughed off the drop zone, I mean exit point.

The Z1 turned up, it's for sale on eBay if anyone would like it. I would honestly feel safer with a ice scream container tapped to my head.

Re: [Dadsy] Full face helmet
I've been looking for a good full face for jumping for a couple of years now. Things I want it to have:

- solid construction
- offers real impact protection
- light weight
- not too expensive

Many people I know use skydiving full face helmets, like Factory Diver. These don't do it for me, granted they look very slick. IMO they are only good for protecting your melon from scratches, not hits. But ofcourse that's better than nothing.

Then I noticed many people use DH or MX helmets, especially for slider down jumping. Being used to wearing a motorcycle helmet I got one that was closest to what I wanted (it was a Nolan) and jumped with it for some time but I find it much, much too heavy and bulky in size. Hauling that thing up an antenna was a bitch and taking 2+ seconds SD was just something I knew couldn't be good for my neck in the long run. It weighed 1400 grams which is a normal number for a motorcycle helmet.

A few people I saw jumping Cookie Gas or D2 which seemed good, but emailing with the factory convinced me of their lack of impact protection. They are also a bit on the pricy side.

One person I know jumps a Sweet Rocker, a white water kayaking helmet which has so far the most qualities from my preference list, but I found the price too high for my budget. Then after going through some kayaking forums I found Shred Ready, they also make kayaking helmets, including a full face that was less than half the price of the Sweet. Ordered one and have been pretty happy with it so far, both SD and SU.

Only thing with this helmet is that if your head is big, it wont fit. They only make the shell in one size and my melon only just squeezes in (I wear a Shoei XR1000 size M for motorcycling, and I wouldn't say my head is massive...)

Hope this helps, I'm constantly on the lookout for an even better option, but so far the Shred Ready Standard Fullface has been the best for my needs. But what I like might not be what you like.

Re: [kege] Full face helmet
would you say the Shred ready helmet is comparable to a Protect as far as impact protection is concerned? Better? Worse?

in 2006 i was competing in a swoop competition in wildwood,nj. uspa regulations stated a rigid helmet must be worn. i brought my frap hat, so i borrowed an appropriate helmet. another competitor hadn't brought a helmet at all, so he went on to the boardwalk & bought a beer bong, took the hose off the funnel & tied the funnel on his head with 2 pull ups. it dangled behind his head (pull ups around his neck) most of the time. that was fine with the uspa (but my frap hat wasn't).

I would say its similar to a Protec in that sense, but not better. By gut feeling I'd say 80-100% of Protec. Now that I re-read the whole thread I sort of like the Simpson Pit Warrior OTW but I'd like to see it first hand to determine is it less bulky in size than a standard DH/BMX helmet. And its still about 900g. Anyone have one or seen one in real life?

I would really like something with a good field of vision, the protection of a DH helmet that is a bit smaller and with a less protruding "jaw guard" that weighs 500 grams max. Does it or can it exist?

i have decided to give one of these a go, really light weight, good vision, has a higher impact rating than the down hill bmx helmets, and looks pretty cool.
Its a 888 T8, down hill skate board helmet

Please post again once you've jumped it, I like that helmet and I'll be keen on getting one if it flies well. Is the visor removable?

Re: [dan_inagap] Full face helmet
i wont get a chance to jump it until i do my FJC in september, but yes the visor comes off, glasses fit in easy with the visor on and i just took it for a spin on my road bike up to 140ks and the visor didnt move so pretty happy

Re: [Dadsy] Full face helmet
i took the visor off and did a few skydives with it on the weekend, there are foam spacers between the helmet and the fixing point for the visor, i left mine on during the skydive, they are gone, other than that all good

Re: [kege] Full face helmet
I recently bought the Shred Ready Full Face to try it out and here is what i have found so far after a 17 second delay tracking jump.

The helmet comes as a one size fits all and 3 Padding options. The included pads are very denses and not as comfortable as a Protec helmet out of the box. this is probably because it is intended for water sports. this helmet is extremely light. probably just a hair more then a protec half cab.

The helmet is made for a small to medium size head. I have a small hat size and it is a chore to put my head through the opening while spreading the helmet with the straps. I would imagine a person with a larger head would be very uncomfortable accomplishing this.

I first used the Medium sized pads. Over all it was not uncomfortable to wear by any means but it was a little loose. I chose the medium over the small because the small size were too small (large) and caused a pressure point on my head right above the temple.

When i jumped it as soon as i hit around 7 seconds the wind was forcing the helmet up due to the slight visor lip which was catching the air and how loose it was fitting.

at first i was pretty disappointed that i spent $115 on it but then just decided to modify it and make it fit better and more comfortably.

here is what i did:

-Replaced the front Padding with 1" High Density Foam. I figured adding the foam would essentially fill in the space some and make the helmet fit more snug and also have more surface area that is in contact with my head. I currently have left the rear padding as the factory Small size pad.

- added 6mm rubberized craft foam (same foam that is in my Benny Helmet) over the existing top. the existing top foam is basically a piece of fabric and nothing more. i guess there is no reason for protecting from a top impact in kayaking? you can see it in one of the pictures attached. i modeled the shape after the benny helmet padding. this also made the fit better as it raised the helmet slightly and gave more clearance for the retention system behind the ears.

-Added the same 6mm foam to the chin strap to make it more comfortable.

as for protection i think its about the same as a protec helmet. it is harder to put on and take off with the retention straps but its basically the same ABS shell. one thing to keep in mind is unlike a regular motorcycle full face this helmet has no padding on the cheeks. the only contact it makes with your head is the same contacts as a half cab protec. the face guard has padding but if your face actually ever reaches it (forward/backwards movement) then you either didnt have the chin strap on or you impacted so hard you broke your neck anyway.

I attached a few pics of the helmet and my modifications

all in all the modifications cost me $15 and an hour of my time and the helmet fits great so far. I have not jumped it yet but can already tell there will be much improvement. the most important thing here is now i will look cool and my GoPro will not shake as much. Wink

just did a couple of jumps off Brento with it, the visor flips open then closed again as I pitched, so maybe a bit of velcro or something to stop that, otherwise all good
