That's pretty harsh. Anyone know whether he has he ever busted a BASE jumper?

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't assume all rangers are out to bust jumpers and keep everyone out of "their" park. The ones who are do seem to be militant about it, though.

It's not just busting BASE jumpers or harassing the occasional climber.
you know those dickheads even bust people playing with RC airplanes in the same manor they bust BASE jumpers . So I Got NO sympathy for that NPS & squealing Snitch .

I understand where that view comes from. There is a long history of overzealous enforcement by NPS, but I don't think everyone with NPS is bad.

The people in law enforcement (including NPS) who I find scary are the "true believers"--the ones who are on a mission to completely eradicate whatever specific "crime" they are focused on. Does not matter whether their focus is busting BASE jumpers, keeping the park in its "natural state", busting drug users, drunk drivers, shoplifters, or whatever. That kind of single-minded focus will cloud anyone's judgement.

If the ranger in the story is one of those people then he may well have brought all that hardship on himself. If he was just someone doing his job, though, getting jerked around like that sucks no matter who he works for.

Just my 2 cents.

Whether you get a hard-on for hating rangers or not, his story is pretty sickening.

Does it surprise anybody that this ranger's prosecution occurred under the same administration that deliberately betrayed one of our nation's own CIA members? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plame_affair)

Yes he got jerked around.
but for him just to have the mindset in his job that 'none is above the law' . (or as you say "true believers") . To then whistle blow & think that there would not come any blow-back on his career .
So he fucked himself on that one . all for 130 trees & in the end He Failed .
(as far as I know) The ONLY time you can Whistle-Blow on the Federal level & do without repercussion . Is Fed. EPA with there Whistle blower program where you are shielded from identity & immune to prosecution .

Probably the only exceptions to that are cases that the mainstream media latches onto and scrutinizes. since the NPS does not have a prominent place in the media's agenda, no doubt they can get away with a lot more corrupt behavior than most federal organizations.

Here is an example of a True Believer in law enforcement. Not talking about religion here, I'm referring to those in law enforcement who have a personal agenda that drives how they do their job.

Washington, who is black, said in a deposition that he received at least $20,000 in bonuses from the forfeiture funds.

The former Texas state trooper said God, speaking to him through a beam of light, told him to take the position in Tenaha and directed him to stop drug traffickers on U.S. Highway 59.

"I swore an oath to God that I would get out there and give him all that I have in what I do, and so that's the way I do it," he testified.

Kids were pawns in alleged Texas highway shakedown scheme

Re: [waltappel] Hmm
That shit been going on there for years . TX. LE abuse started with the ' War On Drugs ' when they figured out they could make huge profits from confiscation & sale of private property from ANY ' Accusation ' that it is involved with interstate drug traffic .

I had 2 Texas officers try to shake me down several years back going south out of Huston & going down to Beaumont Tx. to Skydive .
Pulled me over real late in the night on the Hwy. As I was traveling there . Questioned me, asked me if I was carrying cash . Held me outside the truck & Searched Cab of my truck without permission . ( And Tried ) to physically rip the door of my camper open . As one officer held me up front . The officer back of my camper was pulling & banging the door so hard it was shaking & rocking my 3/4 ton truck back & forth .
Little did they know i had installed a 'quality' house Dead-Bolt lock & reinforced the door frame with steel plate .
They were trying to get in my Camper to get @ all my gear & search my truck Cab to find ANYTHING for excuse to impound a steal all my property for resale . but I refused to unlock & give permission to search the attached camper .
They ordered me several times & tried to bully me to open it up for a search but I kept calm & refused & gave no verbal permission .
I had multiple Rigs, equipment, couple firearm, & with Money/cash hidden in my stove in the oven . NO FUCKING WAY I was going to let them get into my ( Licensed Recreational HOME ) without a warrant or beating me unconscious & taking the key out of my pocket & opening it up .
' Texas LE ' Scumbag mutherfuckers Shitting-on & stealing from the public for there monetary . ( to Protect & Serve ) for all they can get .

Don't get me wrong . I had good times in Texas & I used to live there previously for almost 5 years also . & 'Texans do think there shit don't stink' . But Texas chicks are the best, I went with one & traveled with her for about 6-7 years that was from Wichita Falls . Had some good time there .
But with the 1st incident I described above & with a couple of other bad incidents when I was in Texas . & one, I had to draw-down to save my life on 3 Tweakers trying to kill me with baseball bats for making eye contact with them on a remote highway down by Vidor TX. & Only thing that saved me from them was having my Colt on the front seat next to me .
All-in-all Texas, not a bad state but some of the LE & local's are a little fucked-up but there is a little bad in every State.

Re: [RayLosli] Hmm
I can relate. I had a similar experience in Chambers County (I-10 eastbound, headed toward Beaumont) and it is possible that I was screwed with by the same LEO (and I use that term *very* loosely in this case).

The LEO pulled me over for no reason. As I recall, he made some BS claim that I failed to give a turn signal when changing lanes.

The LEO doing all the talking was a black guy. I think he was a Texas DPS trooper and identified himself as being with the "Chambers County Drug Task Force". There was a fat white guy with him that was not in uniform.

The LEO's manner was very menacing, to say the least. After talking a bunch of shit and threatening me, he finally told me to get out of there.

IMO, the idiot has no business owning a gun and certainly has no business in law enforcement.

I don't consider his actions to be a reflection on all LEOs. He was just a psycho that happened to somehow get through the screening process. It happens.

Still, it was the turning point in my attitude toward the "War on Drugs". The war on drugs is a war against the American people. The government has armed thugs kill, rob, harass, threaten, jail, and commit all sorts of heinous and illegal acts in the name of "cleaning up up the community for our children".

I don't smoke, drink, or use drugs, and I was harrassed and threatened with jail by a psycho with a badge. It was a hell of a lot scarier than any contact I have had with any drug user.

Ever since that experience I have been in favor of legalizing *all* drugs and ending law enforcement's campaign of terrorism against honest citizens in the so-called "War on Drugs".

Back to the topic at this thread. I do not assume that the park ranger is a "True Believer" like the LEO that screwed with me. If he is, then he deserves any bad thing that happens to him. Karma is a bitch.

If not, then he is being victimized by the same privileged class who promote the "War on Drugs" while living beyond the reach of the law themselves, and the ranger has my sympathy.
