So many jumpers taking up speedflying!
Howdy all,

I see so many jumpers taking up speedflying it has got me interested!

Just wondered if there are any similar sensations that are experienced speedflying as well as BASE?

Also from looking around vimeo it would seem the dives that some flyers put themselves in gains more groundrush than a base jump.

It would seem the base community has grown very fondly of speedflying and I just wondered if they shared any similarities thats all.

I have all my flights done for a P2. Can you use a paragliding harness for speedflying? That was most of the reason I learned to paraglide, but have gotten mixed answers from instructors.

If it is a split leg harness then yes you can, if it has a plywood/fiberglass/carbon fiber etc seat plate then no you can't.

is it that base is more intense but short lived where as speedflying is a more longer flight?

BASE is unique because you fly

In all other flying activities, you pilot a flying object ...

But this doesn't mean that it's not good too Tongue

It is just fun to run off a hill and soar down the terrain like a fighter pilot.

I always thought it a good cross mix of sports (I used to fly a gin nano 12 around 5 or 6 years ago), using skills of a high performance canopy from skydiving, aassessment and evaluation skills from BASE, whilst being out in the great outdoors (BASE/Hiking environment).

A friend of mine once said "speedfly, safer than BASE"..... until he had a really bad accident speedflying. Sometimes the risks of the two are compariable, which I think skydivers (he was actually a BASE jumper) thinking its just launching a skydive canopy from a hill, dont really appreciate.

i learned so much about canopy flight from paragliding and speedflying, which helped when i got into BASE. I would recommend for any parachutist to try paragliding. Its an exciting sport and maybe not as badass unless you're an acro guy, but still very fun. Speedflying is such a new sport, with the "cool-guy" factor of swooping, and the mountain hikes like base jumping and paragliding... I've seen skydivers that start speedflying without proper ground-handling - paraglider pilots understand kiting and ground handling very well and are less likely to eat shit on launch. A skydiver/swooper will understand the landings better when starting out. I would start on larger wings or paragliders so that your crashes while learning are slower speed impacts... Don't just try to teach yourself to speedfly, and maybe invest in some body armor

also not that BASE jumpers and skydivers/swoopers dont factor in weather, but i think that in speedflying/paragliding (or at least with those who are going about it in the right manner), people end up studying the weather to a much more detailed degree. weather is a HUGE factor not just as far as turbulence goes but also in learning about thermal activity, seeing what the winds are doing and launching/kiting in different types of conditions.

my first real speedflight made me fuckin scream just like i did on my first skydive back in 06........it was absolutely amazing

Speedflying looks fantastic. It's on my list... I'm unsure about the geographical fitness of Western NY is for practicing the sport, however...
