What about 'Someone you know or met died', wouldn't consider them a 'close' friend.

someone who graciously shares an exit point and helps me out, gets called a close friend in my book. YMMV

Yeah, I was just trying to keep the answers from being so vague, anyone thats been in this sport for any length of time has a friend thats been through each situation, personal appliance probably better for this I suppose.

True. But what if you've never jumped with them? For example, in '06, I talked to B.L.S. at BD. I introduced myself, we talked about El Cap, then I watched him go in. I can name a couple of more...

Yeah, I spoke with him as well as I was two people behind him in line preparing to make my 1st jump ever as I watched him jump. I'd say a friend would be someone you could bang on the door of at 1:00am and be greeted with a laugh and pleasant punch in the ribs maybe.
