Re: [MBA-PATTO] Chinese customs and parachutes
No, we didn't meet, but yes, I was there from 2009 to 2011 and participated in several events with the same organizers over the last four years. I've also been back a couple times since I left to visit friends and travel the country.
Many of the exits the Russian claims to have opened have been previously jumped by other people.
While it's totally feasible to jump in China, without government backing, without any spoken Chinese, and without a good understanding of the areas in which one is jumping, the situation could rapidly deteriorate. The country
is filled with checkpoints, military, police, militia, and government volunteers, many of whom are distrustful of laowai (foreigners). There are also many really friendly, fun people in China, but just like everywhere, one must be able to discern the difference and know where the definite "no-go" areas are. Believe me, they exist. China, rightfully so, doesn't like to grant visas to people who commit crimes while visiting China. Keep in mind that as in other places, what constitutes a crime is usually up to the discretion of the enforcing parties.
I have traveled with all manner of air sport equipment (except clamps) into, out of, and domestically within China by plane, train, and automobile. I've yet to have a problem, but that's not really the point. My point is that China is a very different country and a good bit of knowledge and prudence should be used, but then this is bj dot com, and while about a third of the users on here regularly exercise prudence, about a third enjoy wantonly throwing it to the wind, and the final third have no effing idea what prudence means.
I'm not being a hater, but people need to know that China is NOT Switzerland, Norway, or an EU country, nor is it Thailand or other more user friendly places. People have been jumping there for a while, but with a lot of care. I recommend any one else going there do the same.
