Chinese customs and parachutes
I have been informed that it is illegal to import parachutes into China as part of my household when moving there. Frown
Does anyone know if that is true? I am a little bit surprised, as obviously quite a number of people have gotten their parachutes into China without going to prison.

Is it just that they have not been caught, or is it because they were just there for holidays / short periods of time?

Any help on this matter would be highly appreciated...

Dear Peter,

thank you very much for the information. I have met some Chinese Basejumpers at bridge day a couple of years back and was quite impressed by their accuracy skills.

In reply to:

Hey you guys

English guy living in Berlin , working everywhere else and GF in China.
Also looking if there is a nice way to basejump in China. The giant bridges look truly fantastic. Some of my most fun jumps have been off the big spans in France. As got personal relationship in China it would be nice to combine visit with a jump or two in 2013. Nothing too hardcore or too stressy.

Cheers

Take photos like a rock star

I will be heading back over in September to knock out a few good exits over there

Love china and defiantly will be going back same time every year

Not trying to be funny, but you were on a government sponsored trip, were you not? Good luck with getting another visa after you get busted for bandit jumping over there. Ni3hui4bu4hui4shuo1zhong1wen2?

Re: [stinkydragon] Chinese customs and parachutes
Yes i was on a government funded trip..

but i had to organise my own flights and all at customs, they did not say "oh here is anotehr one of the jumpers...

the only issues i had were clamps, they wanted to know what the fuck they were..

i flew in days earlier and also left days later after scorring more epic jumps around china..

whilst there run into a russian jumper who has been opening many exits all over the place...

The hardest part was trying to get online , needed a proxy server to get outside..

Stinkydragon were you there too? i dont know your real name..did we meet ..

Re: [MBA-PATTO] Chinese customs and parachutes
No, we didn't meet, but yes, I was there from 2009 to 2011 and participated in several events with the same organizers over the last four years. I've also been back a couple times since I left to visit friends and travel the country.

Many of the exits the Russian claims to have opened have been previously jumped by other people.

While it's totally feasible to jump in China, without government backing, without any spoken Chinese, and without a good understanding of the areas in which one is jumping, the situation could rapidly deteriorate. The country is filled with checkpoints, military, police, militia, and government volunteers, many of whom are distrustful of laowai (foreigners). There are also many really friendly, fun people in China, but just like everywhere, one must be able to discern the difference and know where the definite "no-go" areas are. Believe me, they exist. China, rightfully so, doesn't like to grant visas to people who commit crimes while visiting China. Keep in mind that as in other places, what constitutes a crime is usually up to the discretion of the enforcing parties.

I have traveled with all manner of air sport equipment (except clamps) into, out of, and domestically within China by plane, train, and automobile. I've yet to have a problem, but that's not really the point. My point is that China is a very different country and a good bit of knowledge and prudence should be used, but then this is bj dot com, and while about a third of the users on here regularly exercise prudence, about a third enjoy wantonly throwing it to the wind, and the final third have no effing idea what prudence means.

I'm not being a hater, but people need to know that China is NOT Switzerland, Norway, or an EU country, nor is it Thailand or other more user friendly places. People have been jumping there for a while, but with a lot of care. I recommend any one else going there do the same.

In Oct. the World Wiingsuit League held it's first wingsulit race off of Tienman mtn. in Zhangjiajie, China, in NW Hunan province. I got to attend as a judge at the exit point. It was beautiful and people were super friendly. I would love to go back. I did hear that civilian skydiving is not around as the military controls airspace. I hope events like the WWL race, which was partly sponsored by the local Govt. and tourist bureau, and of course Red Bull China, will help relax the rules on skydiving there.

+1. The official Chinese line of the Chinese Aeronautical Association AFAIK is that it is illegal to basejump without permission. Who-ever grants that permission, well, that is a good question.

Re: [MBA-PATTO] Chinese customs and parachutes
Hi there,
I'm heading to Chengdu later this week and would love to get some jumps in. I've been to China twice before and the opportunities seem endless. Would you be so kind to put me in contact with some locals or anyone that will be willing to hook up for a jump or two? I'm going for work and will be there from the 14th to the 30th.
Thank you!
