Android emergency app for solojumpers?
Thought I should share my latest find.
It's an app that send your location by the press of one button, or press the button and a timer countdown and then it sends the location.

It sends the location by sms or mail (sms is probably prefered) and contains your message and a googlemap link.

But it only works if you don't land on your phone Wink

I like the idea of being able to turn your phone into another tool to add to your quiver. With that being said I find it easier to trust a SPOT emergency beacon for some reason. I didn't study to far into the Android APP but if it is similar to the IPhones similar version it requires you to have a phone signal, making it nothing more that something fun to look at while you lay in wait for the rescue party to be informed. Just my .02

I think its a great idea but on my android the only option for contacts is a random selection of emails. Or maybe Im just using it wrong.

there's an app for both android and iphone from REGA; apparently, they also know who to contact if you should be abroad. but only really useful for swiss i suppose.

it can be found here: http://www.rega.ch/...edia/mobile-app.aspx

Odd.
I just tried it on mine and it works.
I just started typing the name of a person and it gives me phone or email as option.

Look in the contacts, maybe your phonenumbers are as homenumbers not cellphonenumbers.
Or mail the developer, I think he wants to know there is a bug

Well, there is a BASEjumping game you could play while waiting for the rescue TongueLaugh

About the iPhone app, it seems it only has emailsupport.
It could take longer for someone to notice they got a mail, keep that in mind.

Re: [Hellis] Android emergency app for solojumpers?
I like to always call an actual basejumper who is familiar with the site when soloing. Since they know the area, they also know not to panic if there's a landing are with poor signals. Relying on an app for this is IMHO really dumb. What if your phone is damaged, you lose signal or if the person you're contacting is on vacation/lost phone...

Re: [-rm] Android emergency app for solojumpers?
Of course you have to contact at least one of the people you make the app send the location to.
Apps like these only makes it possible to get help from more people.
You can even add your SOS central (911, 112, etc.) as reciever.

And BASEjumping solo at a place were you might lose singal is IMHO really duimb, but what do I know.

The Spot PLB has proven to be semi-unreliable, as it functions on a private satellite system, and has had other problems over the last few years. The ACR BLP is now 220$ and the smallest BLP out there. In the backcountry snowmobiling and boating communities, you wouldn't be caught dead with a spot.... cause there is better more reliable gear out there.
Just my .02$ on PLB's.

I hate smartphones for one reason. They follow you around every second of your life. And then they keep the data. Even if you turn off GPS, the towers can nail you in the neighborhood.

Imagine the consequences on down low objects.

The data is readily available to LEO, and for all I know, others as well. They can nail you down to a particular driveway, and LEO uses it a lot now in things like burglary cases. Which, hey, is good.

Anyway, carrying a cell phone around is like carrying around a low jack on yer ankle. Perhaps you should look into how it behaves when turned OFF. Unless you want to transmit your exact location at a certain time and place and have it accesible later on.

Myself, I don't like the entire idea of getting tracked around to ten meter resolution every moment of my life, and having it stored for eternity.

Airplane Mode, or just turn it off. Smile
