Perrine Bridge Maintenance Postponed until Summer 2013
Trying to come to the bridge for a FJC round June/July and ive been told there is going to be maintenance on the bridge and no jumping allowed while this is happening for up to a month. Does anyone have any specific dates of when they plan to do this?

Re: [yaface] Perrine Bridge Maintenance
I just got off the phone with the ITD.

The bridge will have maintenance done at some time this summer. The bidding process has not yet begun, but it looks like on the present time frame a contractor will be selected in June. The work will be done at a time that fits the contractor's schedule.

The work will take approximately a month.

One sidewalk will be open at all times during construction. This means that the east side (normal exit point) sidewalk will be closed for approximately two weeks at some point this summer. While it is closed, the west sidewalk (dark side) of the bridge will still be open, and jumping can proceed from that side. There should be no equipment or obstructions hanging from the bridge, so canopies will have a clear flight path under the arch back to the landing area.

If some work is done on the lower steel, it will take place between 10am and 3pm and should not really block a canopy flying under.

If you have any questions, the contact person at ITD for this project is Todd Hubbard and he can be reached at +1.208.544.7907.

That's good news. I didn't want to have to reschedule. June is my 2 week vacation.

Do you know if this will hinder any FJC's taking place during construction?

That's going to be up to the instructors of those courses, I would think. It might also depend on their specific teaching progression.

If the students aren't ready/able to jump from the dark side when the regular side is closed, then yes, it could. I'd imagine that most instructors will be able to find ways to work around that, though.

There is no standard FJC curriculum. Some FJC's do only hand held jumps. Some do stowed, static line and slider up. The difficulties involved with limited access to either side of the bridge will depend on the specifics of the course.

Just spoke with ITD and they are currently planning to start maint. on june 4th. There will be a couple days that they will also be working under the bridge replacing some of the bolts in the steel. There will always be one side open as previously stated.

If you jump from the "dark side", pull high. I've landed on the "dark side". Very unpleasant to say the least. HAHA

Tom,
I have talked to some local's who have people who say that the bridge would most likely be closed to jumping.
With the traffic backup that is expected and congestion, expecting to be jumping during construction would be optimistic imho...one little problem and the traffic nightmare would be just that.
That is just my take after being out there in the wind the last few days. I did get my picture taken with Old Faithful while she was going off though,,,,would rather have jumped..

Can you tell me who here you talked to?

The ITD project manager and the foreman I talked to when they were putting the signs up on the bridge were both very clear that there would always be one side open and that jumping would be allowed from the open side as normal.

I just got off the phone with Todd Hubbard at ITD.

The equipment is at another job site, so the schedule here depends on if that job finishes on time.

Assuming that it all goes as planned, the timeline looks like this:

Work will begin on June 11th, on the east (northbound) side of the bridge (the regular exit side). Work is expected to go on continuously (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) for 24 days.

The east side (regular exit) sidewalk and traffic lanes should be closed for approximately 12 days (from the 11th to the 23rd).

The west side (dark side) sidewalk should be closed from approximately June 23rd to July 5th.

All scheduling is tentative, because they are not sure if the equipment will be available on time.

Jumping will be allowed to continue as normal from the open side of the bridge during the construction.

I'm going to sticky this for a while.

Re: [loudtom] Perrine Bridge Maintenance
I just talked to Todd Hubbard at ITD.

They are having trouble scheduling the equipment, and the start date has now been pushed back to August 1st, with the same work schedule planned.

Because this is a big project (they are doing all the bridges in the state) and they have limited equipment (in particular, the machine that removes the existing surface from the bridge), the schedule is subject to constant change.

I'll touch base with Todd periodically through the summer, and post whatever I find out as it goes on.

The bottom line is that the construction will happen at some point, and we don't really know when (and neither do they), but that it should be possible to jump around the work. Personally, I'm just planning as normal, and will deal with any disruptions as they arise.

Any updates on the bridge maintenance? I will be jumping in Twin Falls August 24th-26th.

Re: [JLTerry25] Perrine Bridge Maintenance
Construction is currently scheduled to start on Monday, August 6th.

If they hold to this schedule, the regular exit side will be closed from August 6-18 and the dark side will be closed from August 19-31.

Given how well they have started on schedule with the past 6 announced dates, I'm skeptical that they will actually start on Monday, but anything is possible.

I have not heard that they have any plans to change or cancel.

You ought to contact them directly if you want to know for certain.

So you know where to get the information you're seeking, but instead of going to look for it, you're just going to throw up a post on some internet forum looking for someone else to do the work for you, and then spoonfeed it to you?

Be careful doing that around here. There's this OuterBounds guy who loves to harsh newbies who do that. Tongue
