Any one have some techniques for climbing fences around an object for those of us that are umpa loompa short?

To be more specific, one of our local objects has chain link that has smaller links than normal, in that, you can't get your toe into the fence, only fingers.

And there's not much in the way of alternate footholds. The door catch / latch can be stood upon, but the railing to pull myself up is a little over 6' above the latch, total of 12'. And i'm 5'7".

Why do you jump a 310 sq ft canopy if you are 5'7'' ? Are you very heavy? 5'7'' is not that short and regardless, you should be able to ascend pretty much any fence without issue.

If you're willing to make a bit of an investment, you may be able to purchase a set of climbing aiders, a small sling, and a carabiner. Attach the climbing aider to the fence, and use the steps in the aider to get up. Once on the top, balance precariously or sacrifice your genitals to sit on the fence, flip the aider to the inside of the fence, and descend using the aider.

This whole setup will probably fit in a cargo pocket or in a small stash bag you can take with you pretty easily. Or you throw it back over the fence to your ground crew and they take it away...

i say loose 40 or 50 lbs you are going to need to be in shape for most base jumps anyways.

Re: [crumbta] Short Jumpers
You are 5'7" and the railing is a little over 6'. Does this mean you have T-Rex arms that do not extend over your head?

If doing a pull-up is that difficult there are many variations of rope ladders that can be very useful for conquoring 6' fences.

Re: [crumbta] Short Jumpers
Just bend some a bit thicker metal wires to S-shapes, insert those into the small holes and there you have footsteps... A bit cheaper than climbing gear.

Go o home depot, buy 9' of PVC pipe. Cut it down to 3' sections. Go to the corner of the fence and slide it through the two joined sides to make a ladder.

Re: [nakeddave] Short Jumpers
how can one reach a pilot chute or the toggles given such a T-rex arm situation?
Shortcut
Re: [nakeddave] Short Jumpers
No TRex arms.

Had to fix the first post too. The distance from the latch (that I was standing on) to the first part of the railing is a little over 6'. Total height from ground to railing is 12' or so. And I just found it tough to reach with one hand in the small chain links, and nothing but the latch to stand on.

Thanks for all the input, thus far guys!

Re: [crumbta] Short Jumpers
if there is little bust factor just use a 8-12ft ladder and have a friend along to remove it or remove it yourself when your done with the jump.

how small are the links? do you have a pic?

Re: [SubTerminallyill] Short Jumpers
I can take a pic next time we all go out there. The links are just big enough to get my fingers into. I'm guessing they are ~ 3/4" wide

We'd thought of the ladder, after the jump but thought it better to find another way for me to get up there. Less for the gc to carry from the object to the parking area, or to leave there while we climb and collect after.

From my very limited experience, I'd say it's medium bust risk. Houses are a few hundred yards away, and the road only has one way in / out. Tower is neat, and has a few platforms from 450' to 700'

Everyone else jumped, which is alright. I'll get it eventually, good learning experience either way, shot some ground footage anyway.

Try using one of the corners. Often times you can do a semi-layback and smear your feet against where the brackets hold the chain link to the pole.

Old School tip #007: Go under the fence if possible. Cool

Re: [crumbta] Short Jumpers
If possible, using the wall where the fence meets the building helps. Careful not to leave footprints on the wall if you use it to smear and not to bend the barbed wire and leave a huge dent at the top of the fence. Being able to do one pull up goes a long way. If its an an object you jump regularly, might be worth learning how to pick the lock. Some of those combination Master locks aren't too hard to pick.

how much vertical wall smearing do you expect a 5'7" 205lb guy to do??? :P

I'm 5'7" 150lb and probably considered heavy as a climber.

Ya I'm 6'0 and barely 150 as a climber =P In climbing, weight makes a massive difference. When I lost 10 pounds I was climbing a full V grade harder.

We're talking about a fence, not some hard core, sustained overhanging climb/bouldering problem. A little technique improvement goes a long way, especially when you're only talking about getting up 6-10 feet.

Truth. I just feel like if I had on a 75lb pack, climbing a fence (especially barbed/razor wire), would really really suck.
