After years of talking it up and saying it would cost millions of dollars, Jeb gets beaten by a guy with a box rig. That suit must have a special pouch for his balls.

Re: [Clark282] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
How do they say in the UK? This looks like its gonna be a SMASHING good time! SlyShockedWink

But at least he's got a whole 450 base jumps among his 1200 total parachute jumps and used to be a pro Kayaker! I don't think there's a special pouch for his balls, he probably keeps them in the empty space between his ears.

To each their own I guess.
Shortcut
Re: [cloudtramp] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
But what if from all those jumps, say 10% (165) were done for training with this goal in mind? How about 20% etc. What percentile would be adequate for you to find it acceptable (for you)?
Take care,

Re: [Clark282] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
Whats a box rig? Something like a pile of cardboard boxes?
Shortcut
Re: [cloudtramp] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
It's not a base jump for a start. (ok I know wrong forum)

I also consider 450 base jumps experienced.

I also consider 1200 skydives experienced.

Just because there are people out there with hundreds/thousands more jumps doesn't make the person less experienced.

Good luck to him and his balls.

Sounds like a really great plan. And doing high falls into cardboard boxes from several hundred feet I suspect gives you the same entry speed into the boxes as flying/stalling a ws into them does.
Shortcut
Re: [biker117] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
I think it's the same as stunt men fall/crash into on high falls and stunts. Just A shed load of cardboard boxes.

In reply to:
What percentile would be adequate for you to find it acceptable (for you)?

What's acceptable to me doesn't matter worth a shit. It's what's acceptable for him. Seems to me like he is attempting an extremely dangerous skydiving stunt that requires absolutely precise flying skills to pull off successfully while only having 850 skydives under his belt. Seems like a gamble but maybe he's a Jedi wing-suit master. Like I said, to each their own and I wish him luck at least for his wife and kids sake. Either way it's going to be worth watching.

(unless the box thing is as large as a football field, then maybe it's not so crazy. What do I know anyway... carry on.) Tongue

Hahaha, this is hilarious: Jeb now says he was not going to land wingsuit per se. Everybody misunderstood him.

From Dorkzone:

Doing things first is not always the most important thing :) If he succeeds it will only help me in what i am trying to do :) What he is doing and what I will be doing are two very different things :) My goal is not to land a wing-suit which is what a lot of people have miss understood. My goal is to land at terminal velocity :) It has always been to jump from a aircraft and land without using a parachute. The wing-suit has always been a very small part of a much bigger plan :) I want to land at 120mph or as close to it as possible :) So if he slows to 60 or 70 mph lands, it will be very impressive but not what I want to do :) Plus he still has to land without getting hurt :) So we will see :)

Very smooth move, nobody noticed. LaughLaughLaugh Another N years of BS'ing media and exponentially growing price for the vaporware ramp.

And if somebody does land at 120mph, Jeb will come up with another smooth move like this. Angelic Landing headdown at 180mph, maybe?

What a clown! Cool

Re: [jeb] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
Before people start throwing e-blows I am curious, how does his goal and yours differ? I must be missing something.
So he is going to flare hard enough to slow down then land in boxes and you were just going to burn in? Therefore his landing and yours are not essentially the same goal because...?

Don't worry, I'm an internet aficionado so you can trust me with these answers.
Shortcut
Re: [OuttaBounZ] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
When you see me ask me :) I will explain :) But our goals are not that different :) I am just saying his will not stop mine if he succeeds :) I will want to land in a major city and at much higher speed :) His landing will only help me with mine :) I wish him luck and hope he pulls it :)

jeb wrote:
I will want to land in a major city

Why :)

jeb wrote:
and at much higher speed :)

Why :) His approach is: slow down to survivable speeds and crash into cardboard boxes - something he, as a professional stuntman, has done many times :) Yours is to slide it out on a ramp :) So why not do it first at "slow" speed to prove the concept :) And then do it at "terminal" speed* :)

jeb wrote:
His landing will only help me with mine :)

How so :) He'll steal the show for sure :) First is first :) Second one is the first loser :)

* BTW, any speed you can sustain in wingsuit, is terminal :) By definition, terminal speed is sustained speed flying body reaches and maintains in any given flight configuration :)

P.S. Edited to add this smooth line borrowed from OuttaBounz:

Don't worry, I'm an internet aficionado so you can trust me with these answers.

So I'm not the brightest BASE jumper! But I do know that jumping from an aircraft IS NOT a BASE jump. It may be cool as shit, but it's not a BASE jump! Who is going to land the first BASE jump without a parachute should be the topic here! Otherwise this has Dorkzone written all over it! You guys are nit picking about technicalities, oh he's not landing terminal, I am, blah blah blah! Very cool but not BASE jumping!

Any ideas for landing a wingsuit BASE jump? I'm on this site for BASE not skydiving!
Shortcut
Re: [base587] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
Goals change over time :) This has been a very long process for me :) Like I said before I had considered the box catcher and deceleration fans in the beginning :) Over time the idea grows and as you learn about new tech and talk to engineers and find out what is possible your ideas evolve :) Also as your skill level rises your ideas of angles and speeds change :) So yes, I have changed my ideas on how to land over the years and I am sure it will change even more after we get financing and go through the feasibility faze, proof of principle faze and then construction. In the end science will dictate what I do. What I would like to do is not always what will happen. But I guess the best thing to do is sit back and watch :) We will see if the box catcher works and then in time we will see if my plan will work :) I am sure what ever happens will be interesting either way :) Have a good one but I am done talking about this on public forums :) If you have questions ask me in person or send private messages :) But to be honest, if i don't know you I will probably not answer you :) Have a lovely day...

Re: [jeb] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
what about using technology similar to how fighter jets are landed on very short runways on flight decks of aircraft carriers? (ie lines hooked from the underside of the aircraft).

see the little hook thing on the end? That thing snags a line and the line stretches (cables go out) and they decelerate the aircraft slowly.

my dad said he saw somebody decapitated by one of those lines. Walking half asleep on the aircraft carrier in the wrong place wrong time Unsure

So you're still confident someone is going to fund something thats aleady been done? Interesting take on it given that I doubt you have been pushing sponsors away for the last 7 years while you have been selling this idea. Its great that you believe your plans are materially different, but I'll be very interested if anyone else does?

Re: [Clark282] Wingsuit landing without parachute this April.
Does anyone else think the forward motion is going to be a problem when crashing into the boxes? I'm certainly no stunt or box-rig expert, but it would seem like a big issue to not just fall in there but have forward speed aswell?

But, for example, I've seen Matt G schlare his wingsuit before pitching and it just looks like he gets 2-3 seconds of hang-time watching from the ground. If its timed just right, it might just be survivable, but for Gary's healths sake, (no disrespect) I hope he flies as well as Matt.

Well his exits look a lot better than jebs ; )

And Kerkko, I also have a feeling the angled entry into the box rig will dramatically decrease the resistance it offers, pushing boxes out of the way instead of crushing them, even if they cap the top with a large cloth (which they should definitely do). I hope it works.

Edit to add: Maybe they will wrap the hole thing with cloth? That could keep the boxes from being pushed out of the way.

This is very familiar.

The response seems similar to when Dickhead Dave, aka Superdave, aka FerrariTechnician jumped the Foshay Tower in MSP during the middle of the day. Got pinched when he later when back to the bar in the Tower to brag about his accomplishment. When he started to get flamed on these forums he had some bs response about a bigger plan or some crap like that.

Jeb, you and I have crossed paths at various spots and I had respect for your skill. I haven't been a fan of the media attention you seek but have always respected your skill. This latest grouping of posts really gives me doubt.
