Zakynthos Greece
I'm trying to plan a trip to Zakynthos Greece to jump and I was hoping for any info that might help me. Things like getting there, rules on jumping Ship Wreck Beach, things like that. Is it legal to jump anytime? Is it worth going during the World Base Event? Can anyone jump during the event?

Sorry for all the questions. haha

if you go to my BASE Zakynthos Greece page on FB, look under "Info" and it tells you everything you need to know to get you from the Athens airport to the exit point on Zakynthos. Almost nobodys been there so it's the full adventure(almost no info)to jump there. it is the greatest place I've been, hands down mind blowing.

Take some val mate!

Wouldn't say it was a breeze, we were lucky we arrived at Athens airport, we sat and drank beer until the bus left with the others jumpers, drank more beer on the bus. Arrived in the middle of the night then had our hands held to the exit point and then back to the top in the morning.
Truth be known it was the best event I have attended but I would have preferred to do it your way than babysat.
It was a cool place to stay with a couple of pretty Greek girls looking after us.

Boats, transport, finding the exit etc could be and would be a nightmare to sort on your own. Accommodation does not need to be.

BASE jumping onto Navagio(Shipwreck)Beach. Events and info.

Description

This will have as much accurate information about how to get from Athens, Greece to this exit point on Zakynthos Island as I can provide. Details will include car-rentals, drive times, dining, accomodations, nightlife and very importantly, boat rides.

My Wife and I 1st saw the pictures of this BASE jump from the Pro Base event held there and immediately fell in love and bought tickets to Athens. We then found out that there is virtually no active information about what is actually a very remote and rural island trip. There is almost no internet(or so slow you'll freak)on Zakynthos. There are no hotels where you can book a room and there are no boat captains to talk to about getting back from the beach after you land there. There is no way to have a shuttle driver ready to drive your car back from the exit point once the boat drops you off at wherever they take you. This all has to be negotiated when you finally get to the NW part of the island. Expect nobody to speak any other language than Greek. This is not Athens on the mainland, this is Zakynthos. Communication is very difficult because the only business they know is mainly boat tours and that's it. Trying to explain that you will parachute from a cliff and land on Navagio Beach, you need a boat ride back, someone needs to drive your car back to you, you need a place to sleep and where is good to eat are all totally foreign ideas to the locals and VERY big obstacles to take care of before you ever make 1 jump.
If you don't speak any Greek, expect to get fully over-charged for almost everything. The locals are not being dishonest, you are just a tourist with very odd requests and they are trying to make money in a shitty economy. That being said, the locals are all very very friendly unless they are driving and you are in front of them.
You can fly directly onto Zakynthos Island. This was over $3,000.00 USD from the US. We flew into Athens for under $1,000.00 USD. Your choice. There is a Budget Rent a Car at both airports and we got a good deal on a Fiat Panda that we drove the hell out of for our trip. Budget gets our vote.
If you fly directly onto Zakynthos Island, this trip is much easier. If you fly into Athens, rent a car and drive West towards the the port town of Kyllini. Buy a fancy map of Greece and you can figure this out. There are 3 toll booths as you are leaving the Athens area and you'll pay about 3 euros each time. Stay on this road which steadily gets worse and wilder for about 4-4.5 hours and look CLOSELY for the sign that says Kyllini. Turn right here and drive for 10 miles towards the giant ferry boats and good luck negotiating the wierd roads.
The ferry boats are HUGE and obvious. Look on the left as you approach the boats and there's a tiny building that says Ionian Ferries(tickets to Zakynthos). For 2 people and 1 small car it was 52 euros one way to the island. The ferry is about 1.5 hours to Zakynthos and there are is a full bar and cafe upstairs with very fancy lounges and lots of places to relax.
As you leave the ferry and drive into the town of Zante, you will see signs that point all over the place. Look for the sign that says 'Alykes' and drive that way. The drive through this small town is VERY beautiful and very sketchy, Fast drivers and tiny roads mixed with fantastic Sea views is risky/awesome. You will pass through the town of Alykes and start looking for signs that point towards 'St. Nicholas Port'. This is a very pretty, very tiny village with cheap rooms, a coffee shop/bakery, tiny market, tiny gas station, several places to eat and many boats in a beautiful harbor. This would be a great place to start. Get a room, find a boat Captain that runs trips to the "Shipwreck Beach" and ask if he has any friends that will drive with you to the exit point and then drive your car back to the town. Negotiate the price for all of this upfront.
5 miles from here is the Skinari Lighthouse, home of the Potamitis Brothers and the small resort where we personally did most of our business. They have two excellent Tavernas(restaraunts), small rooms for rent(slightly expensive) and the best boat tours to and from the beach all right there. The Potamitis Brothers already know what BASE jumping is and what your wierd requirements are. Only the main caretaker Yianni Potamiti speaks much English though, so be ready.
From either St. Nicholas Port or Skinari Lighthouse, the exit point is about a 15-20 minute drive. From the Navagio Beach Overlook, park your car and walk 300 meters down and to the left, you should find the one of the most exotic exit points you will ever see rather easily.
All this being said, you could just wait for the Pro BASE event to happen, join up with that and most of everything is taken care of for a fraction of the cost. My information is for the people who just want to go, can't join the Pro BASE event or whatever.
Even with this info, expect a full on adventure with many possible perils both financially and bodily. For us it was worth every minute and every penny.
Please feel free to ask any other questions. Fancy maps and Google Earth will get you almost impossibly lost, maybe. Good Luck!! Viva la Zakynthos!!!

Anyone going to Zakynthos should def try to contact the local jumper who also opened the site, quite possibly the most beautiful jump ON THE PLANET.

In consideration of that fact, please exersize caution, there is NO RESCUE on the island. A hangup on the wall can (and has) be fatal. A well prepared Zak expedition brings 300m of static line for self-rescue.

Don't fuck up the garden of the gods.

Re: [Ale-x] Zakynthos Greece
There are no Island locals that BASE jump. You'll probably be on your own. Go to the North end of the Island and find a hotel room. The jump is incredibly obvious once you're there. If there are ships on the beach when you jump, they are all headed back to the same town(jump with a 10 or 20 Euro note in your pocket). Prepare to have your reality altered.

Why dont you do the same description for all the objects you ve visited and jumped "legally" ? basejumping is still legal in Greece because it hasnt withdrawn much attention . one man who did everything alone , already died . he would have been saved if he was part of a team or organised event . is it all about the money ? i m still wondering cause i m only 26 . why dont you sell drugs instead of BASE , both are addictive and kill people fast or slowly depending on the individual ,you ll make more money ,in some countries are legal too . what kind of old jumper are you ?

Re: [mike_sketo] Zakynthos Greece
Mike,
You misunderstand the intent of the Zakynthos beta. The island folks are already aware of and embrace base jumping at Navagio beach; it's not Yosemite. The local economy benefits from BASE jumper visits so long as jumpers are knowledgable and respectful. Second, the boogies have not been for profit, rather, they are presented as a means for jumpers to enjoy the object and what the island has to offer in a collective/fun/organized manner. Jumpers may choose to take their own path and jump outside of the boogie construct. The main point is that lone jumpers must excercise good judgement as THERE IS NO HIGH ANGLE RESCUE. The local jumpers all live on the mainland and cannot run to you in the event of an emergency.

You seem age-ist, disorganized and angry. I think a jump from this beautiful cliff would really help get the sand out of your vagina. And enjoy a Mythos when you're done. Wink

But that then again is the case more or less in any legal location in the global. Generally as long as people are knowledgeable and respectful the local community likes any activity done in respecful manner in their backyard. Unfortunately we as base jumpers have very bad track record in this area. And I hate to be the pessimist here but I beg to differ that the case with zakynthos would be any different. As long as we can behave, we are welcome. As soon as the hordes of half drunken and stoned base jumpers start sexually harassing local girls in bars and start continuously slamming themselves to the wall in front on traumatized families enjoying their day on the beach...we have a problem and zakynthos will follow the road of yosemite, lauterbrunnen, brevent and many others. Hope not but a afraid it will.

Shortcut
Re: [maretus] Zakynthos Greece
I wasn't aware Lauterbrunnen was closed to jumping? Yosemite is a different story entirely and Brevent had two people go in the same day within a few months of the sight being opened. There are 10 times more sights being opened every year then are being closed. The sport is being accepted more and more every year all around the world. The people participating are being seen as athletes instead of crazy psychos and now there are actual outlets for people to earn a living doing an activity they love. When I started 15 years ago we could never have imagined the acceptance we are getting now and the opportunities that are being laid before us.

This closed surfer local mentality is quite old fashioned and shows a true lack of understanding of the global base situation. The reason we have around 6 fatalities a year in LB and the location is still open is because so many jumps are done there by so many jumpers. It has also become a real boost in tourist dollars being brought into the region. It's kind of like a ski resort. If they have 300,000 visitors a season and 6 die and a few hundred others get broken up and taken to the hospital then they don't really care so much. They see the benefits far out weight the risks. But if you try to keep a sight secret and then the first time a community of people hear about base jumping is when someone gets seriously injured or killed, well that is when objects get shut down. As long as there is a long enough track record of people jumping in a safe and responsible way then when an accident happens people don't mind as much.

Also I have to commend the swiss base association and other base organizations around the world for actually going into these communities and educating them and working with the communities. This is probably the single most important work being done in the base community. I love you guys and everyone should respect the work these men and woman are doing. I love the swiss base association even though I know a lot of the members don't like me very much :)

Rather people agree or disagree with the message I present in the media people must agree that base has more legal access now then it ever has in the past and it is far more accepted world wide as a legitimate activity done by passionate athletes. In the last 15 years I have seen a lot of changes and I have gone through a lot of changes. But I see base going in a very positive direction with opportunities opening up for everyone in the activity. I try to avoid the word sport because sports are games with made up rules where made up teams usually transport a little ball around a field. Base jumping is so much more then what that word implies...

Re: [maretus] Zakynthos Greece & Jeb
Adding to Jeb's points, It is a common misconception that injuries and deaths are bad for business. While, of course, frowned upon the rescues and body recoveries stimulate an economy as well. A ski resort typically has a clinic that ski patrol delivers injured skiers and riders to that provides medical care at a premium price. There are professional ski patrollers who make their living solely as ski patrollers, there are doctors and nurses at those clinics also employed full time.

As many of us know all too well, when a base jumper has an accident, thousands of dollars are spent on rescue and medical care be it an ambulance in twin falls or a heli rescue in switzerland. When a base jumper dies there are local services also employed. Morgue services, caskets, transportation, helicopter body recovery. it all costs money, and we pay big bucks in those times of sorrow. If we are responsible, we are later reimbursed by the deceased life insurance or the injured person's medical insurances.

Point being, typically a death or injury should not be bad for business of a BASE site hosting reason, but if we walk out on our medical bills, we are the same as scum bags who walk out on their tab at a restaurant. Let's encourage each other to carry proper insurances and also be safe.
