Lock Threads to lower the Noise Levels?
there has been a burst of threads here coming from excited wannabees who eagerly sign up and immediately post the standard set of questions. most have never skydived, painfully few have demonstrated any curiosity about any information already on this site, and probably arrive pumped up by Youtube.

instead of letting these threads follow a predictable course, would it better simply to post a note to read up and lock the thread?

I voted 'Other', I was going to say lock it only after OuttaBounZ has posted a picture, but now that I think about it, I say lock it!

No, I don't think you should lock those posts.

One of the funnest threads to read is that from the poor, unsuspecting, uninformed, clueless wannabee looking to be the next YouTube million hit wonder.

The regulars on this board who take time to reply to the young neophytes, are providing an invaluable service and saving lives by turning these aimless DGIT's around and sending them down a much smarter and safer path.

Not to mention that the level of creative writing from those who reply, is some of the funniest writing anywhere on the interweb. There will always be wannabees. A lot of them will come here first. And almost NONE of them will take time to read the stickies. Let them ask and let them know what they need to know. Many really, really are going to need the 2x4 on the head to get a clue. For some, that won't be enough but you gotta try nonetheless.

Because right now, they know nothing. In fact, they know less than nothing. If they knew that they knew nothing, then that would be something, but they don't. (name that quote)

(Oh by the way, greetings from a newbee.)

I voted to not lock them because I see it as an opportunity for the potential newbies to get a reality check from people who *know* about the realities of BASE jumping--the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright weird.

What they see on youtube presents a very distorted picture and I don't think they are likely to get the realities of BASE by reading about it.

It's entirely possible that some lives have been saved in this forum, so I would like to see the threads continue, even though I occasionally get really sick of them.

As much fun as it is watching the new threads pop up and slowly move down the line I think it is in the best interest for the people who are actually using this forum for a source(not the only source) of information. This site is an absolute mecca of information! Maybe narrowing down the thread's that are accessed and directing people through the search engine to find the information they want is a possibility? Just my .02.

I originally voted "Other" because there doesn't seem to be an absolute solution that could satisfy everyone.

But... after reading some thoughtful (and not soWink) answers, I vote for no lockdowns; or not too many.
