Cleaning tar off a canopy
I managed to get a little bit of tar on a canopy, and am trying to get it off.

I read/heard lighter fluid might get it out, and won't damage the fabric. I don't have any at my disposal, though.

I do have some of this stuff: http://www.quimatic.com.br/produto/tira-grude/

I tried in on a test piece of f111, and it worked great, but I am not sure if it is worse for the fabric than lighter fluid. The ingredients are hydrocarbons, citric solvents, and aloe vera.

Does anyone have any experience with these two, or know if the second one will harm the material?

Thanks!

Acetone or Toluene is what you want to use.

The products you mentioned and gave a link to will damage the material and performance of the canopy.

Ideally you want to make a 25:25:50 mixture of bleach, acetone and toluene. Use a sponge brush and apply liberally to the canopy. Soak it real good. The key here is not to ever rinse it off, keep it on so it will repel future tar.

Hope this helps

That FAQ is outdated.

Where can I buy Carbo-Sol?
Carbo-Sol was discontinued in January, 2006 because of changes in air pollution regulations in California and other states. Sunnyside Mineral Spirits, Naphtha or other products may be used for many applications where Carbo-Sol was used. Carefully read and follow all warnings and directions on product labels

"Mineral Spirits" will work also. You can put a _SMOOTH_ piece of cardboard or wood, even a magazine in the cell as a backing surface. then put a rag or paper towel in to absorb the liquid. From the outside, where the stain is take another rag or paper towel that has Mineral Spirit on it Blot the area, trying to push the liquid through the fabric. the idea is to get the "Bulk" of the stain off without rubbing the area too harshly.

From Poynters Manual, "Do not use the following as they are solvents for Nylon, Phenol (carbolic acid), Meta-cresol, Zylenol or Formic acid."

Hope this helps, be patient and get the right stuff!
