read.
read.
and read.
ATTEMPT to help yourself before expecting help from others.
show that you will work hard, for your own health and safety, before expecting others to do so.

understand that you are NOT asking anything new. it has been asked before. if you read what has gone before, you show respect to those who have tried to help others. it will also give you understanding of the culture of regular users. by attempting to learn, hopefully you can avoid the standard pitfalls, embarrassment, and harassment.

Wait until it gets warm, then go to Ogden or Tooele and make a tandem skydive. Get video, have fun, tip the tandem master and videographer handsomely and you'll be on your way.

Baby steps...

When you log into basejumper.com click on the 'forums' link, then click on the 'beginners' forum, then click on the post that reads 'Read before posting'. Then read it.

Then log out and log onto dropzone.com and get started skydiving.

Good luck.

I realize that this question has been answered before in more detail (which you should search for), but here is a skeleton outline of what you need to do initially:

1. Get involved in skydiving first, it is up to personal discretion to decide how many jumps you 'need' to start BASE. In my humble opinion, I recommend you at least be certified as a skydiver and get in 50 jumps.
2. I don't know how many people do this, but I would also recommend bungee jumping a few times. It'll get you slightly more comfortable with the height difference between skydiving and BASE. In most cases, BASE jumps are higher than bungee jumps, but you just want more experience by this point.

These should be your first two steps, hopefully this is helpful for you :)

I would like to add some reasoning to your recommendation to get some skydiving experience.

BASE is a *critical* application of parachute equipment. Much like the scenario where a rock climber hanging by a rope will face serious injury or death if the rope fails, a BASE jumper will face serious injury or death if the parachute equipment fails.

Parachute equipment is much more complex in its operation, though. It requires a great deal of first-hand specialized knowledge to use the gear and that knowledge cannot be gained from a book, nor can it be safely learned from BASE jumping. The safest way to learn the equipment and basic parachute-related skills is to skydive.

Opinions vary as to how much parachute experience someone should have before learning BASE and it will vary from one individual to another and also depends a great deal on the training the person receives.

The number I hear repeated most often is 200 jumps. My opinion is that is a very low number because these days, it is possible to make 200 skydives in a short period of time and it takes more than just jumps to learn about the gear and to learn freefall skills--it takes time.

For any newbies reading this, don't despair. Despite what some wiseasses around hear say, skydiving is a lot of fun if you do it with the right people. It's not cheap, but generally it is a shitload cheaper than BASE jumping.

Read all the information in the BASE Wiki.

The BASE wiki articles were originally hosted on their own web site. When that web site went down they were relocated here (on BASEjumper.com). Later, they were copied and reposted to your link.
