Re: [WinterAdrenalin] ABsolute newbie
I would like to add some reasoning to your recommendation to get some skydiving experience.
BASE is a *critical* application of parachute equipment. Much like the scenario where a rock climber hanging by a rope will face serious injury or death if the rope fails, a BASE jumper will face serious injury or death if the parachute equipment fails.
Parachute equipment is much more complex in its operation, though. It requires a great deal of first-hand specialized knowledge to use the gear and that knowledge cannot be gained from a book, nor can it be safely learned from BASE jumping. The safest way to learn the equipment and basic parachute-related skills is to skydive.
Opinions vary as to how much parachute experience someone should have before learning BASE and it will vary from one individual to another and also depends a great deal on the training the person receives.
The number I hear repeated most often is 200 jumps. My opinion is that is a very low number because these days, it is possible to make 200 skydives in a short period of time and it takes more than just jumps to learn about the gear and to learn freefall skills--it takes time.
For any newbies reading this, don't despair. Despite what some wiseasses around hear say, skydiving is a lot of fun if you do it with the right people. It's not cheap, but generally it is a shitload cheaper than BASE jumping.
