Father and Son Jumpers
Okay, this is similar to Spiderbaby's Post: How many Father and Son Jumpers are there??

My father got me started skydiving in '91, then I started BASE jumping in 1992. Took my father to Bridge Day in 94' and be made his first and only two BASE jumps. He won the Accuracy Contest for his Division too. I will tell you he could not wipe the smile from his face for at least 24 Hours. Sly

I was wondering if anyone knows if we were the first and or only Father and Son jumpers.

Don Boyles who made the first modern bridge jump at Royal Gorge in 1970 and a few more at early bridge days in 82 and 83 had one son active in BASE and another 2 kids skydived back in the 80's. BASE 58, a friend of mine put his dad off a bridge in 83 and John Hoover, (now deceased) put his son and mother off bridges back in the 80's.

Don't know how I forgot that as John was my mentor. Yes, I remember seeing the pic on Johns Wall. Casey is his son. I remember John telling me how much contorversy it rose as his sign was barely a teenager. Grandma holding the bag!

My dad got me started SKY jumping in 2002.

He had logged 175 SKY jumps before retiring.

He has been to Bridge Day twice, no jumps.

He ground crewed my lowest freefall to date.

I want to take him tandem for his 62nd bday.

Re: [GreenMachine] Father and Son Jumpers
My dad had a bunch of skyjumps and 2 bridge day jumps but that was way before I started so that doesnt really count.

Guy in our crew's dad sky and base jumps with us. Not super often, but has his # and been to Moab, ect. His name....."the dean"

Re: [jawbreaker] Father and Son Jumpers
The earliest one that I know of was mentioned above. John Hoover did a two way with his son, who was 12 or something at the time, off of a low bridge over water.

His mom, who is your typical elderly Oklahoma grandmother, held Casey Hoover's pilot chute for the assist.

There is a classic photo of the jump out there. When it came out there was an uproar over child abuse!

Sure do miss Crazy John coming by the house with bears at 10:00am.

Re: [base388] Father and Son Jumpers
Im "The Dean"'s son. He started jumping in '90. I think '94 or so was his first Bridge Day. He has 1000 skydives and 50 pr so Base jumps. He took me on my first BASE jump at BD '99. I then took him to get his other three objects. The building was terrifying. We climbed a 215 foot grain silo and the wind was 180 from what we thought it would be. So we decided to jump the other side. I call it the short side. It was 150 feet! As im holding his pc, I say, "ya know if this doesn't work, I'm climbing down, right?" He laughed and hucked. After we landed with no incident, he said that, that was easy and he would do it again in a heart beat. I said no Dad, that was low as balls. Just cause we are fine this time doesn't mean we need to set bait for the Reaper. Cool jump.
I also have a Pic of my brother, Dad and I doing a 3 way at BD. Its one of my favorites.

Don Boyles is a cool old guy. First to jump Royal Gorge, way back in the olden days, before BASE was formally named.

He had a little patch made up for anyone who jumped Royal Gorge, and would give it to you. It was that rare to do back then, even 15 good years after he did it.

Geez. Imagine jumping that thing with a big round and sticking the landing in that evil gorge. You can steer those things ya know. they are just slow.

Is he still around and kicking, RH?

Re: [BASE104] Father and Son Jumpers
I heard he was still around. I meet him once about 15 years ago. Someone said he brought out a powered Paraglider out to the DZ a few years ago.

Re: [waltappel] Father and Son Jumpers
Hey thanks Walt. I remember now, he didn't put his mom off, only his kid. It was Kevin who put his dad off in Texas about the same time frame.

Thanks for the attachment. BASELINE 3 was the only one I'd lost from the old days. If you have a way of posting either of John Hoover's 2 funniest shorts it would be cool. One is the Lawyer in the sketch, "You B Sue Happy" from the firm of "Ambulance Chase", and the other video of "PARACARE" Get them off BASE objects and back onto dropzones" These were two really great pieces of satire on VHS. Hoover was always a spark plug to a party whether it was New River or other. He was here a few weeks before he died. Please let me know if you have any luck.

Team Coco... Isn't that Conan?

Name stealing, bastard! Laugh

Yup, my dad and I (the Coco's) still jump together.

He is wicked hardcore... I kinda suck though. Tongue

This is always a fun topic. We are clearly not the first, but I think last time this was discussed, I was the first son to teach/mentor his father.

My dad jumped rounds back in the 70's... and stopped for unclear reasons, right as squares were coming out. (Still have all his gear) He told me all about it and showed me pictures when I was 10ish. Then we both made our first ram air jumps 4 days after my 18th B-day. And then he said, when he saw all the fun I was having with BASE, he knew he had to join me.

He has been to Bridge Day 4 times, we spent a week in Twin, and I've taken him to several slider up and down A's.

It's pretty sweet to share BASE with my dad... but its scary at the same time. There is always that bit of anxiety mixed with the bliss and joy of watching friends jump. Its a bit more intense when its your dad, at least for me. Its never fun watching a friend have a problem... its far worse if its your dad.

And my mom would kill me if he ever got jacked up, HA! So I watch over him pretty closely. But she is fine with it, and loves watching video after... far more worried about other drivers on the highway than BASE, especially with how obsessive I pack.

With his schedule and the current environment of base (local busts and a fatality), I doubt he'll get his B if not for KL or other... and likely next year we'll share a Heliboogie. So he might have his BASE # in a few years.

Looking forward to sharing Hell Hill with him too. Cool

It's Good Stuff!

My wife and I jump with our son. He started jumping with me at 16 off the Perrine. We did a two way at bridge day two years ago. I have done over 20 jumps with him. Would prefer he didn't jump at all, but if he is gonna do it, I'd rather be there with him .

I learn with him at 21 years old (now 34) and we share 3 years jumping together. It's some of the best moments we share together !

Hope you enjoy BASE as much as I do !

Your dad was a great help to me and 515 on our first Europe trip in 1999. He lead us to the exit points in Lauterbrunnen and told us of some great ones in France. I remember on our way to one of the best ones we looked at the Brevent exit and discussed how it was totally jumpable. It's amazing to me to know that maybe a decade later it became a sought after wingsuit exit!

I think Jacques had like 1000 jumps back then... how many did he end up doing before retirement? His help was greatly appreciated and we would not have got many jumps had he not been so kind to show us around. Many thanks!!

Re: [BASE104] Father and Son Jumpers
Far as I know he still lives up in Tulsa, but haven't had contact with Don for years. In 82, my brother Randy and I did the first 2 man star at B Day and Randy took too long open to make it back to the dry land. He was struggling to drag his canopy to the beach so Don Boyles jumped in and helped him to shore. That's when he gave us some black and white photos of him standing on the Royal Gorge bridge in 1970 with an old B 4 harness and 2 rounds. Nice guy.

So... We've got an awesome new addition to the club!

Chuck "Zero Fucks" Moeser, followed by his son Lee, and now... his daughter Rose.

Which also makes this another First!

Rose made her first jumps in twin, and soon after attended Bridge Day for the first time this year. I've had the pleasure of freeflying with Chuck and Rose (extra special for me because I hadn't sky jumped in a year), have shared the Bridge Day exit point with Chuck, but have yet to meet Lee.

So, maybe a "Family Way, Big Way" is in store for a future Bridge Day?!
