Nice perspective of an off heading opening
Thought I'd share some footage a friend of mine took not too long ago. He climbed right to the point of the tower I'd be opening at and caught a really good shot of my opening:

Jump at around 40 seconds in.

Nice! Is it just me, or the canopy is a bit overloaded?

did you exit below or drop between from above ? Cant tell from Camera Angle ?
don't look like 180 but only about 120 off . was quick correction . looks from the vid. you chose Toggle over rear-Riser .

Yeah I go for toggles. 120 is about right and on that jump I exited right at the lines but jump from above as well from time to time.

Nice reflexes.

I watched the video and paused it at the 41 second mark (your about ten feet above level from camera) or so and your left knee is about 12" lower than your right.

I'm not criticizing your body position just wondering if it contributed to your off heading?

Do those towers have a standard height, or does it vary by the landscape?

There are a whole set of them not too far from my house, out in the middle of nowhere, with no wires attached yet. Prime spot if they are high enough, huge fields surround them.

They look about 250-300' maybe. I could always climb up with some rocks or a range finder.

Edited to add:
I found the govt document describing the towers for that specific area:

"500kV Self-Supporting Lattice Structure – The proposed tower structure for the 500kV transmission line
is a double-circuit self-supporting steel-lattice structure made of dull galvanized steel. This structure type
was selected primarily because (1) maintenance activities are safer than other tower design options due to
the configuration of the circuits and (2) the tower family does not exceed 200 feet in height. The average
tower height would be approximately 170 feet, with a maximum height of 200 feet.
"

Boo. hiss. Anyone down for some static line action?

If you own a Range Finder, aka "Laser"
then you do not have to climb an object
to measure it, shoot it from the ground.

Yep!

The angle between b and a is not 90 deg, so I don't think it uses pythagoras theorem. However, we do know the length of b and c and the angle between them, so we can use standard trig functions.

Re: [sebcat] FYI
When used in real life, the angle is so close to 90 that it makes no difference.
My beautiful picture shows a antenna that is perhaps 10-12 m (30-35) feet high

Re: [Hellis] FYI
Assuming the ground is flat, yes. But trig functions work regardless. Pythagoras is just a special case. Trust me, I'm a university drop out. ;)

But if the ground is not flat, you can use that to your advantage.

It should have read "Climb up with some rocks, or use a range finder."

Thanks for the cool drawing, though.

I am not about to go open a low tower like that, but if anyone else feels they will/should/or must, I can give you all the details.

I am dealing with the same thing where I am. Loads of power towers, and all seem dirty low. I am car-less where I am at the moment, but I'm hoping to get out and check out a few that I have seen.

My plan.. pack a super clean SD setup (obviously), dbl break cord, 48"PC, suunto, big rock in pocket.. show up in good wind, climb to exit. Check Suunto, check wind, drop rock. If all looks good... take the quick way down.

If not.. climb down go get a beer and be pissed that you probably won't get to check out any other objects while your here because the person who took you was bored as fuck watching you climb a power tower.

... on second thought.. maybe I should haul up a watermelon and drop it. At least that way the person on the ground would think it was cool to see a watermelon explode.. and PERHAPS would take me to another location. Hmm...

Go climb and find out brotha'. :) If anything its exercise and will build your knowledge as to how the towers are built and how to maneuver around on them. Hope the work out for you!

Cheers!
