Hello all, Im from San Antonio Tx, I stumbled upon some basejumping videos filmed with a GoPro and immediately something told me that this is what I want to do.....Someday... After reading the first thread in this forum I realized that there are no shortcuts(which I expected) to learing how to jump and not kill yourself. Anyways Im gonna be reading through as much as I can and hopefully I learn a thing or two about this amazing hobby. I'm currently working at my university and at a CPA firm. Im studying to become a CPA... getting close to graduating. Anyways thanks for your time and if anyone is from SA area let me know what/where is the best place to start the learning process... Edit for clarification, dont ask hank to teach you to base jump. Ask him to teach you how to skydive. He's an awesome motherfucker.

Almost every person I know that jumps has a history in some sort of "extreme sport". Sometimes it's FMX, Big Mountain skiing/snowboarding, gnarly big mountain climbing, cliff diving, etc etc.

Do you do any of these things? If not, I would stay far away from the thought of Base for quite a while until you do one of these and skydive. Your body does weird things when you have no air awareness. Be sure to get some, and then think about hucking yourself off and having the control to adjust in a fraction of a second with dire consequences if not done properly.

hahaha, do you honestly think I would post a thread asking about BASE jumping if I was still contemplating if I could physically do it? I didn't want to have to list my accolades but I guess I have to have completed some "prerequisite" extreme sports to be considered eligible to jump...
I've skied; Taos, Wolf Creek, Ruidoso, all greens, blues, and blacks(no doulble blacks).
When i was younger I raced and jumped dirt bikes
When I was younger i skated vert
I ran track and went to state when I was in high school
etc...

Look thanks for the insight but I think I can eventually, gradually after learning everything there is to know about packing, jumping, and timing the release, learn how to jump.

Plus my highschool spanish teacher skydove and he couldn't bench more than 100 pounds... I see what your saying man but Im not a total complete moron lol.

LOL. USPA recommends 200 skydives minimum before you jump any kind of camera, GoPro included. Lots of people jump them with way less, but no instructor is gonna let you wear a camera while you are a student (in theory nothing to prevent you from jumping camera once you have 25 jumps and your A license but dont be surprised if the local DZO or S&TA says no way until you have 100+).

wow, i dont understand, If the camera is attached to your helmet then how is that any different from just wearing a helmet? I dont understand but if you say so then I guess im not wearing a camera lol

You just have to find a smaller camera. I have one sewn into the collar of every shirt I own.

The main reason is that even the smallest weight on a Protec helmet can send you into an infinite spin of death. I once heard of a guy who started skydiving with only one ear ring. Spun to his gruesome crater and final resting place, ear first. You'll be alright though, just find a smaller camera or hire a DZ videographer so you at least have something to post on facebook.

Wow the USPA is serious lol, it looks like im gonna enroll in the San Marcos trainng class and do Tandem for my first jump. The camera thing is pretty scary if you think about it and I'm starting to see why you need a certain amount of jumps to be able to take a GoPro with you... Thank you all for the feedback i've learned a sh*tload today about skydiving and basejumping.

alright i have some problems. first, you used to race mx and skate vert and now you want to be CPA? what the hell happened to you? what ever happened to fuck the corporate world, don't trust anyone over 30, and so on? you sound like you have some serious issues you need to work out.

and don't listen to anyone about not wearing a camera. All base jumpers have cameras cuz they got cool shit to film. yeah they might distract you and cause your death, but that's hardly tragic. It would be tragic to not get it on film!

Your missing the point. It's not a pre-requisite in the sense that you need experience to move on to more "extremo" shit. It's a pre-requisite in the sense that the more athletic ability you have right now, not what you used to do, because there is a huge difference. Will keep you alive, because base is fucking dangerous. Don't kid yourself. This sport can kill you, and has killed people way more talented than you(and me). You are not special, none of us are when it comes to base...

The less prepared you are, the more chance you have of ending up seriously hurt or dead.
