FCC antenna search into google earth
Hey guys. I made a similar version of this for myself and even though it's very very crude, I figured some people out here might want to use it.

Follow these directions to take your FCC database search results right into google earth!

1) First download and install google earth if you don't already have it
2) Perform your search at http://wireless2.fcc.gov/...srAdvancedSearch.jsp
3) Select and copy all the information on the table (excluding headers). This means you should have highlighted and copied from the numbering at the top left to the final height AGL at the bottom right.
4) Open "fcc to google earth.xls"
5) Right click cell A1 in Sheet 1 and click Paste
NOTE: Once you paste it autoformats and merges cells A1 and A2. If you want to paste new information you must unmerge these.
6) Highlight all the generated entries in column L and copy them
7) Open "Template google earth file.kml" USING NOTEPAD
8) Paste just under <Document> and SAVE

You can now open this file with google earth and it will load in all the site coordinates and the site name will be its height AGL.

NOTE: This only works as-is for coords with positive Latitude and negative Longitude. Some slight modification is necessary otherwise.

If you have any problems with it let me know and I'll see if I can help...I'm sick of playing with this atm so I didn't refine it at all.

im a little thickheaded trying to figure this out, can you take a sec and explain why it is better than just copy/pasting the lat/long from fcc search into google earth???

Re: [samadhi] FCC antenna search into google earth
You can set it to return 100 search results on the FCC website. That means you can just copy/paste 100 sites into that excel file then copy the output google earth code and put it into the KML file. You can put as many locations in the KML file as you want. I just spent ~10 minutes or less and now have every site on the FCC website within 120 miles of my house loaded into my google earth (over 2500 locations).

Then with all of those loaded in, you can see which ones are in a location that most interests you (middle of nowhere for day jumping, really close to your house/work/etc)...or overlay the dopplar radar to determine which sites would be out of the path of rain, etc.

Let me know if you find it useful at all. If anyone is having difficulty with it, let me know and I can either help or just compile a list for you (please only ask if you can't figure it out =P).

Also, sorry it's so crude. I just did the minimum work/time to get it working and some people really liked the idea so I posted it. I'm sure someone could make a program that does everything automatically for you...but I rather spend that time watching BASE porn and procrastinating my "real" life.

Somebody already did this. I have seen a google earth file with every antenna in every state seperated by heights. It came in pretty handy if I recall.

You should post it here. That's pretty awesome. I wonder if it updates? Lotta new antennas being built =D

There are many versions out there, why not just let people get it from other jumpers they know in real life? Besides, who trusts anything they get from anonymous people on an internet forum?

Also, there are so many things a KML file auto-generated from a database won't tell you, like if something:
- has been jumped
- is currently being jumped
- has been burned
- has special considerations to keep it from getting burned
- is guarded by tranny midgets riding doberman pinschers with laser beams for eyes

I gotta agree though, Google Earth Base Porn is fun.

Oh - and there are towers that don't appear in those databases. But it's better to avoid those anyway. They're scary. Unimpressed

This thread from 2008 http://www.basejumper.com/...rum.cgi?post=2894562 has a result of the notification of an asr to kml creator that generated some controversy, mainly people getting annoyed that public information was being posted on a public website. Its a pretty clean thread now; the griping has largely been removed. I created the program back then; pulled the entire database and ran a sql query that created kmz files with state names like asrGA.kmz or asrCA.kmz. Unfortunately my HD died and I lost the source code, but you can pull the 2008 data from here: ASRdata.zip.

Thanks for the info! Let me know if you happen across that program as it would be waaaay better =P, but, for now, to get an updated list I'll use my jury-rigged set-up.

Also, as to the controversy that originally inspired...
I'm going to make a new post about a question I have.

That's funny. I had forgotten about the "post deleting frenzy" that had arisen during the course of that thread. It actually contributed to my distaste of using this webforum any more; I hate the fact that you can delete your posts at any time.

I believe if you think you have the balls to make a douchbag post, then you better have the balls to either back it up, defend it, or apologize for it when everybody else calls you a douchbag! Sneaking back in and deleting your posts is a pussy move (IMHO).

I've still got the database (I might even have your source code, I could have swore you sent it to me?). I use it on Google Earth all the time and have jumped a ton of stuff through it (as have a ton of other people). I am constantly coming across people that have and use it and rave about it.

Maybe when I drop that stuff off for you we can talk about updating it... =;>

I used it to dayblaze a sketchy tower way beyond my ability levels. Guess maybe some of those people were on to something!! Thanks Bill!

If you have the code or the exe (I think I at least sent you the exe) it would be great to have it back; I can recover the essential source code from the exe.

It's going to be a bitch getting that thing in the basement, the other two are still in the garage. Reminds me why I went into engineering...but yeah you want that updated, I am sure we can come to an agreement :)
