Bummed I never got a chance to meet him, but he is a huge inspiration in my life. Rock on Shane. Rip in peace.

My Halloween costume this year:

I never met him but when I drove by this I couldn't resist.

And the most professional sponsored extreme athlete with whom I ever had the pleasure of working.

Shane understood that sponsors don't pay you to have fun; they pay you to make them look good -- and he took that more seriously than anyone I know.

Everyone who is sponsored can learn a lot -- a LOT -- from the way Shane always put his sponsors front and center before, during and especially after his adventures, when he would not only be available for interviews, but put together "after-adventure" reports that had almost every detail reporters needed to make a complete story.

Then he would also hook me up with photographers, and otherwise help coordinate the data collection to make it easier for me (and the other reporters on his list) to meet deadlines with the best and most comprehensive story possible. When I wrote for Skydiving Magazine, it got to the point where we'd laugh about it turning into "Skyshaning" Magazine because, no matter what the event or adventure was, he'd end up getting quoted because he was always the one who got back to me fastest, knew the most -- and had pix ready to go.

Anyone who knew Shane or knows his legacy knows he was one of the greatest skiers ever and a gifted base jumper too and I just wanted to pass on that he was literally as good at the business part of being a sponsored athlete as he was at skiing and base jumping... and that those who follow in his footsteps would do well to emulate that part too.

I met Shane on boat ride out from the perrine. We got in boat and he asked if anyone liked the water. I said yes and he promptly shot me with a water cannon which he had been hiding in one hand over the side of the boat. At first I thought he was a dick but then I saw how happy it made him. And it was pretty funny except that it happened to me.

I was shooting stills on the launch ramp at WBR 08, having a bit of trouble tying myself to the security rope Shane unzipped his wings to be able to tie a proper knot around my waist. I had plans to shoot him with big dorky glasses, a suit and briefcase and a black rig on top of troll wall (just another day at the office style).. Never happened :(

I cant wait for the documentary in 2013! Such a positive person!

Trailer to air Sunday

The other day, Shanes birthday of all days, I was enjoying a few beverages with some great company and I got up to look at some of the photos of Local "ski" heros and just local heros, when I glanced over an oddly familiar face. It was Shanes dad and a couple of his friends. This was amazing, I live up in Jasper Alberta Canada and to come across this piece gold really made my year! R.I.P Shane, you are a true inspiration!
