BASE Beginners

I swear ive seen this before.
In reading up ways to jump your base canopy from a plane, i seem to remember a picture/video ( or maybe it was a wacky dream). The jumper had a base rig on, though the canopy was unpacked and held in his lap, cant remember if it was a in a dbag/direct bag or anything AND also had his sky rig over the top of the base rig. Would that solve the issue of not jumping a single parachute system, since you already fill the requirements of having a 2 parachute system/in date approved reserve blah blah?

Yeah, but it's it's generally much simpler to just borrow a student or accuracy rig to pack your base canopy into.

All I did was simply cut-away my main,
attach a BASE wing on risers to the rig,
pack it, put it in a shopping bag, ride
up to 4,500 in 182 with it on my lap,
pilot cut the engine, exit on my back,
remove bag & boom instant canopy.

This method should only be attempted
by experience SKY jumpers who know
how to exit stable and NOT gift wrap
the tail of the plane.

Renting a student rig or freepacking the
canopy into your rig with a lengthened
closing are safer ways to do this.

Times 1 through 3 - perfect
Time 4 - SD, talk about a Slammer

Side Note: when do you wanna
get together a share a jump?

I got a rig packed for you Tongue

Nick Burden did a similar thing at the MOAB boogie in 2010. He had a round in a plastic bag sealed with painters tape attached to a BASE container with a rig over it. A buddy of mine PCA'ed him out the door. Fun stuff.

Warning! Food for thought!

Anyone planning to put their BASE harness/container underneath their skydiving rig with the thought that 3 canopies (1 deployed from a bag or something) is better than 2, please consider this:

Most BASE harness/containers do not have hard housings in the cutaway system. This can mean they will not function as smoothly as your skydiving rig might when jettisoning a canopy. Take the time to hang yourself in your DZ's training assembly and practice cutting away. Make sure you're comfortable with how different it is before trusting your life to it. Also make sure you can find that tiny, hidden cutaway handle when you're flipping and spinning and shit.

We were planning a weird Mr. Bill thing that would have employed a BASE harness/container, but we ditched the idea entirely when we started practicing the cutaway, as it seemed that under a spinning load it could have become a herculean feat.

We have since procured a skydiving harness sans container with the appropriate hard housings. Game on!
