IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
I just called IHI Bupa to get a travel insurance and have been told that they don't cover base jumping any more!

Does anyone knows who else provides base jumping insurance?

Thanks

If so, will it help fill this gap?

This is no good... Frown IHI Bupa was awesome, my gf had an accident in LB a few months ago and they covered everything. It was a minor accident in comparison to some/most but IHI saved me about $6000.00.

I will be doing research to find a new provider but if anyone knows another company I would be very happy to know. Jumping overseas would feel a whole lot sketchier knowing I didn't have coverage...

Re: [maganoha] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Just looked at XSI and they do not cover BASE. Even in their "adventure" plan. maybe calling and paying more could get them to cover it but in the basic plans online, BASE is listed as an exemption to coverage.

I spoke to the Bupa representatives in a chat session. This is what they said about insurances that were bought before the change was announced:

Sena Johnsen: it is going to be valid from 01.01.2012. But for customers buying their insurances now
Sena Johnsen: knowing about the change
Sena Johnsen: it will also apply
Sena Johnsen: but since you did not know about it, and issued your insurances several months ago
Sena Johnsen: you will be covered, until you have to renew the insurance again
Sena Johnsen: next year
Sena Johnsen: Since you already have you insurance you are still covered
Sena Johnsen: just please be aware that the next time you renew your policy
Sena Johnsen: you will not be covered for basejumping

I think there can be no other way. Terms of any agreement cannot be changed after signing it, without both sides agreeing to it. So if base jumping was covered at the moment of signing the agreement it has to be valid till the agreement expires. No new law can work backwards.

Re: [skow] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Sometimes they can, ther can be a paragraph saying they are allowd to change the terms.

I don't know if thats the case with this insurance

Re: [Hellis] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
I would guess all insurances have these clauses in them. My life insurance has a clause that states that they can change the payment amounts or the terms of the insurance contract if I don't tell them about increased hazards or dangers that have an essential impact on my safety. Even seemingly minor things, like spending a year in foreign country, should be reported to them and if you fail to do so they might change the terms if they so choose.

On their Beacon brochure it states "The Sports Rider provides up to $10,000 coverage".

That does not seem like much coverage to me. Medical bills in some countries can cost multiple times that.

Re: [Gary_C] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Yes you are right. It's not a large figure by US standards perhaps, however the risk is also relatively high. Depending upon the country involved it may be quite substantial. Ex. $10K USD in Columbia or in Thailand would cover a great deal of care. It's also quite affordable depending upon age & travel length around $1 a day many times. Okay, I am sure everyone os sick of the advert.

You will need to purchase a policy before midnight January 31st (Australian Eastern Time)to be covered for Base Jumping. If you purchase the Explorer policy today or tommorrow then you can certainly enter the policy start date in April and this policy will have provison to cover for Base Jumping. Any policies purchased after January 31st can not cover Base jumping at all.

If you include the Sports Rider coverage on this Atlas International policy, you will have coverage for injuries/illnesses as a result of thrill-seeking activities such as base-jumping. The only “exclusion” you will find is that we cannot provide benefits for Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) for injuries resulting from thrill-seeking activities (even if the Sports Rider is included)

so, you must include Sprot Rider and will be ok, i hope :)

Re: [skediver] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
The Atlas Travel Series through HCCMIS is a great product to consider for international medical insurance coverage - you can even include the optional "Sports Rider" to the policy that would allow for medically necessary coverage for injuries as a result of non-professional/non-competition thrill-seeking activities. Here is a link to the policy for quick and easy quotes/purchasing: https://www.hccmis.com/atlastravel/?referid=9800575F&language=en-US

So.. has anyone purchased travel insurance through the insurance company mentioned above? (The Atlas Travel Series through HCCMIS)

I just got to Europe yesterday and had planned to get the insurance before I left. 20min on hold on the phone... twice..with never talking to anyone. An online forum that always gave me an error code. Multiple unanswered emails and no returned phone calls from voice mails left on Brandis extension. Are these guys legit? Crazy

The Sport Rider does seem like a great thing for us and I was quoted $202.50 for a 90 day policy with a $0 deductible and $500,000 of coverage. (This was before the registration forum shit the bed that is). This was including the Sports Rider option. I just feel like something is amiss... getting a sketchy vibe.

Okay.. Update..

I did some more digging and seems that they are good to go. For some reason my mac (Using Safari) would not let me go completely through their quote system. So I used a PC and was able to easily navigate through the quote and get the insurance.

I emailed them so that I could have in writing that the "Sports Rider" did cover Snowboarding, Skydiving, Paragliding, and BASE jumping. I got a 100% confirmation from them that indeed the sports rider did cover all the above listed sports.

I paid $187.50 for a 90 day policy with $500,000 of coverage and a $0 deductible. I received an Email with an attached .PDF file with all my paperwork and a "card" to carry with me.

So.... if I eat shit in the next few months and have to use them I'll be sure to post up a response. Tongue Seems like we have an option... for now..

Here is how I phrased my question to them..

In the email to them:
"I also want to confirm that parachuting sports (Skydiving, BASE jumping, Paragliding) are covered in the Sports Rider option. I read the the explanation and just wanted to double check that these activities are covered on a non-professional level."

Response:
"Indeed, if you include the "Sports Rider" on your policy, you will gain benefits for injuries resulted from parachuting sports like skydiving, base jumping, paragliding, etc -- no worries there! :)"

I assume it was just a miscommunication with wording and the other person did not know what BASE jumping is.

...but I guess it's a good thing they don't know i'm pretty much one of the most professional jumpers ever. Wink

Re: [Svin] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
I just got 38 days cover for a European trip.
I am from the UK, travelling to Europe and live in NZ.
I am covered as soon as i leave NZ, which is classed as my home country, and until i return to NZ.
I believe im also covered whilst incidentally in my country of citizenship (im flying via London) as it is not my "home". They classify your home as where you live and receive mail.
That point might be of interest to other people who are planning a BASE trip to their country of citizenship whilst usually living outside of it.
I chose $1,000,000 coverage (Hope i don't need it!) cos it was a couple of dollars difference. And also chose the $0 excess. I paid $88 which seems very reasonable to me, but i don't have any previous experience with buying BASE insurance.
I'll post if i end up using them too and would be interested to hear if anyone else does. Fingers crossed none of us will!

Re: [BigfcknG] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Reading the website benefits page over a few times.... it does sound Ok for coverage for BASE however... as long as your not doing BASE with a club or for $$ or as they wrote " reward" ....so...if you are jumping at Kjerag..isn't Kjerag considered a club?
cant they fuck you for that?
Legally,I know this shit all boils down to wording and so I'm just asking.

Also, if I'm reading this correctly...basically, as long as your doing BASE on your own...you're Ok...but, if you on a tour or in a comp such as KL or Pro BASE tour..or WBR...isn't that competition and...doesn't it have the possibility for reward as in trophy or $$...doesn't that make you in eligible?
Is anyone else reading this the same way?

Again, I'm not saying this wont cover BASE, I just think
...they could possibly fuck you if you're tied into any of the tours or comps or.. "clubs" ?

Any one else with a thought on this?

Here is the EXACT wording from the website...

.........
In consideration of additional Premium paid OTHER EXCLUSIONS, #28 is deleted in its entirety and replaced with the
following:
28. Injury resulting from participation in intercollegiate, interscholastic, intramural, club, and professional sports or athletic

Re: [MBA-PATTO] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
It is confusing to me too. I asked them and received this back:

Thank you for considering HCC Medical Insurance Services to provide your international medical coverage. With a sports rider attached to your Atlas policy, you can have coverage for injuries related to extreme sports, such as base jumping, as long as you’re legally doing the activity and you’re not receiving any wage, reward, or profit from the activity. The Accidental Death and Dismemberment provision is deleted during participation in sport activities.

After another question about the "accidental death and...deleted during participation in sport activities" I received this:

If you were to die or have a dismemberment during the base jump there would be no compensation for the death ( $25,000 ) or for the loss of limbs ( $12,500 - $25,000 ). It would cover you for medical expenses related to injuries.

So that clears it up for me. I might go with this company, I might not. For now I'm still looking around.
Shortcut
Re: [MBA-FRANK] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.

typically, a lot will depend on the laws of the country that governs the insurance. I'm betting Kiwi, British, and US interpretations differ, and legal definitions of words vary.

Re: [MBA-PATTO] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Hi Patto and all: I asked about the maximum of 10 - 15 grand. I didn't think that was correct. This is the reply:

The maximum policy limit for injuries under this Rider is the Overall Maximum Limit you select. If you were to incur and injury during your jump and your policies Overall Maximum Limit was $100,000 , then you would have up to that limit to cover the medical expenses. Medical expenses in the US are significantly higher than in most countries, however we do have a PPO network that we have pre-negotiated rates with, that can lessen expenses for ER and physician visits. You can search our vast network of providers with the following link: WEB PROVIDER SEARCH:http://www.hccmis.com/find-a-doctor/ You can narrow the US search by Zip Code.

So it seems pretty good to me. You're right about no payout for death (or dismemberment) with the sports rider though, but I'm surprised that any company covers BASE jumping at all Cool

Edit: ...and you can select more coverage e.g. $500,000 or $1,000,000 for minimal extra premium.

Hi All! Lots of insurance chatter on here lately; I wanted to stop back by and offer clarifications for anyone in need in regards to our Atlas policy that can include "thrill seeking activities" (including BASE) with the inclusion of the "Sports Rider" -- we have gotten a decent influx of policies purchased for BASE jumping and everything is "so far, so good." I've noticed a few people asking about the exclusion for "Professional" sports coverage, even if the "Rider" is included. Our definition of Professional is "an activity undertaken for wage, reward or profit" -- so, as long as you are not competing for wage, reward or profit you will be good to go. Also in regards to "illegal jumping" our exclusion for illegal activities reads as such: "Charges resulting from or occurring during the commission of a violation of law by the Member, including without limitation, the engaging in an illegal occupation or act, but excluding minor traffic violations." So --- abide by the local laws; it's as simple as that. Wink You are all welcome to email me for further information at bpeyton [at] hccmis [dot] com. Cheers!

Smile Once the "Sports Rider" is included in coverage, our "Sports Exclusion" on the policy is replaced with the following wording: "Injury resulting from participation in intercollegiate, interscholastic, intramural, club and professional sports or athletic activities." Further, we define "Professional" as any activity undertaken for wage, reward or profit.

I am working on getting a definition of "club" for your inquiry, as well, as I am aware there are a few BASE clubs around but I am unsure yet how we actually define that (my assumption is that we only exclude registered and official clubs -- not social clubs with a bunch of like-minded folks who are hanging out and happen to go on a jump). I will update as soon as I get a response from my claims department.

Cheers,
Brandi

EDIT: as long as your jump does not merit the chance for wage, reward or profit you will be good to go. If you are in any sort of competition offering an official wage, reward or profit, injuries from that particular jump cannot be covered. If you're "competing" against your buddy and the loser buys the first round of beer, this is not considered wage/reward/profit. One more edit to come, once I clarify "club".....

EDIT: "With the current contract, the only thing excluded would be professional sports or athletic activities." this is the response I received from my claims manager in regards to the "club" listing on the exclusion. So, it looks like all you'd need to avoid is any "Professional" affiliations.

Re: [BrandiP] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
I think the two extremes that need to be clarified are:

1. Membership of a club that organises access (eg, Stavanger Base Klubb, or the Swiss BASE Association), whereby membership fees are taken only to maintain access or recoup the cost of services provided

2. Competing in BASE events, such as the World BASE Race (although this looks as if it would be specifically excluded, if I read your previous email correctly)

Thanks for checking.

Out of interest, are you providing cover to non-US/Canadian citizens?
Shortcut
Re: [Pendragon] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
I sent an email regarding citizenship, and as an Australian citizen, I am covered. I get the impression you are covered no matter where you are from.

Re: [Pendragon] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Sorry for my delay here; I need to set myself a reminder to check on you guys every couple of days -- and if you don't hear from me quickly, feel free to email me at bpeyton@hccmis.com -- I'm happy to answer your questions:

1. As far as "clubs" are concerned, you're okay -- it's only "Professional" (i.e. compensation, prize, wage) that we cannot cover.

2. If you are competing for the possibility of compensation, wage, prize, then we cannot cover for that specific jump. Certainly we can cover for any leisure jumps or even practice jumps outside of the competition.

We will cover citizens from around the world; our only current exclusion is for citizens of Cuba. We also cannot cover Australians seeking coverage in Australia, due to their government restrictions.

Let me know if you have any further questions; I am happy to help you guys!!

Re: [BrandiP] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Hi Everyone! :) I just wanted to let you all know that as of May 1st, our plan includes Sports without having to "opt in" with the Sports Rider -- so you will see on the link that the option to select "Yes" for Sports is no longer. The exclusion for the Accidental Death & Dismemberment portion remains, when in regards to BASE jumping and other sports or thrill-seeking activities....but the plan will now include any medically necessary treatment/diagnostics needed for injuries sustained from BASE jumping and other thrill-seeking activities. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Cheers,
Brandi

Hello, how about Australian citizens looking for cover outside of Australia?
Shortcut
Re: [Dadsy] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Due to Australian government restrictions, we are unable to cover those who are currently residing in Australia (even if you are seeking coverage elsewhere). At this time, we can cover only Australians who are not currently residing in Australia.

Feel free to message me for further details.

Cheers,
Brandi

Re: [BrandiP] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
So just to understand this as i thought before,

Australians will not be covered base jumping overseas unless the australian resides in another country, meaning they live and work in another country away from australia.. and this is even if they get the sports rider option...

i need to move overseas
Shortcut
Re: [MBA-PATTO] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
That is correct! And I know that puts a lot of you in a tough spot....trust me, I wish there was not a restriction.

For anyone who has already purchased a plan, those are STILL VALID. It's only restricted for new purchases made after May 1st.

We define home country as such: for non-US citizens, your home country is where you principally reside and receive regular mail.

EXAMPLES:
If an Australian resides in the UK and is traveling to Singapore, we can cover.

If an Australian resides in Australia and is traveling to Singapore, we cannot cover.

I am researching alternate coverage for those of you who fit in this Australia citizenship/Australia home country category and will post again once I figure out the best option.

If you have questions in the meantime, do not hesitate to email me.

Cheers,
Brandi

Re: [BrandiP] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
what about a dual citizen (American and UK), residing in the UK (for >15 years) travelling to EU/Switzerland? Or even travelling to US?

(when I scanned the website and in your post above, it seems that holding a US passport affects your status)
Shortcut
Re: [dumbaz] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
If you have dual-citizenship, US citizenship "trumps" the non-US citizenship marking...so you will be considered as having US as a home country (and therefore we cannot cover trips to the US). So....in your instance, you'll list US as your citizenship and you can put UK as your home country and be covered for EU/Swiss travels.

I've just spoken with the underwriters on this one and they agree. So -- for all intents & purposes, if you have any sort of US citizenship, your home country will also be considered the US (and therefore we cannot cover you here in the states).

Feel free to email me if more details are needed!

Cheers,
Brandi

Re: [Hellis] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Update on IHI:
I have been in contact with IHI and they are telling me that the changes to their insurance policy is only for non-scandinavian customers. People from Norway, Sweden and Denmark are still covered for base jumping through their travel insurance (as long as they have a "scandinavian policy", i.e. signed up through the scandinavian part of their site).
Apparently this is because our socialistic health system will cover most of IHIs costs, making it still possible for them to keep helping us. The only change for us scandinavians are that we are not covered anymore for mountain climbing in the Antartica or North Pole.
I'm keeping my insurance :)
Shortcut
Re: [johenrik] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
But the IHI insurance will not cover you when you are in your home country.
So? Does this mean it's only valid in scandinavian countrys except your home country, or worldwide except home country?
Shortcut
Re: [Hellis] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
The scandinavian policy works all over the world except home country. Our health care systems will chip in to IHI to help us out no matter where in the world we are.
Shortcut
Re: [johenrik] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
Ok, thanks!

Re: [johenrik] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
To clarify. The insurance is not valid for residents of Finland or Iceland, even though they are sometimes concidered as "scandinavian countries" and have same kind of public healthcare as Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

"1.2: Hvem der kan tegne Årsrejse Verden

If i've got the Atlas site right, as a UK resident, I need to have the $1000 excess and for a year, the policy will be $1,700?!?!

Does anyone have any other options? A real shame IHI has stopped covering it :( Dont need US BASE coverage, just europe for now.

Re: [MaccaPhoenixFly] IHI Bupa stopped covering base jumping.
I tried to book with HCCMIS - Atlas Travel online and it looks like residents of New York state are screwed, as it says we are prohibited from purchasing short term travel insurance. WTF?

I called the line, and the person confirmed that NY state sign something that prohibits short term travel insurance, bastards. I was told to call during business hours and talk to an an=gent to see if anything can be done about it.
I think I will give Brandi a call.

Has anyone used the Beacon Series Travel Medical Insurance Plan from Azimuth Risk Solutions ... it seems to cover BASE if you take up the Sports Rider option and are not jumping for profit or reward, but legal jargon and insurance docs really aren't my thing so I'm just wondering if anyone has experience of using it, or has spotted reasons not to use it that I have overlooked??

Made an inquire to this one and got the following response: "We are only able to provide cover for UK residents, and
furthermore we do not offer cover for Base Jumping.
"
So this one is a bust!

Would like to find an insurance that would cover BASE - have not found one yet. Used the HCCMIS last year. If I only knew they stop covering would have made a new policy before April 1 Unimpressed

thanks for the info ... I've had a look and while it covers an impressive range of activities it doesn't cover BASE at all Crazy

There is no such thing as Base Insurance, never has been.
There are only companies( very few if any these days) that do not know what BASE jumping is or that they are insuring people taking part in it.

I have been in contact with these guys (azimuthrisk.com) regarding coverage for an Australian BASE jumper traveling to Europe and this is the response I received.

Thank you for your email and for your interest in Azimuth Risk Solution’s Beacon Series travel medical plan. The Beacon Series provides coverage for all countries outside of your son’s home country in your selected coverage area (meaning either including or excluding the US/Canada) regardless of whether they are specifically listed on your destination countries. The Beacon Series does offer a Sports Rider.

He's kind of skipping around the point I think.
