Antenna Radiation Sign
I was checking out an antenna and it had this sign on it. It's a cell tower b/c I saw a Verizon sign on the inside, so it's not AM.

My question is: does this sign really mean that the radiation level is dangerous or is it just meant to scare people? I know that with most engineering stuff, a big factor of safety is usually built in. There's a good chance that the FCC simply has very conservative requirements for posting these signs. Thanks.

Yes, it may is dangerous. Non-ionizing radiation won't break your DNA or cause cancer, but you can get badly hurt. If it's a high frequency/high power transmitter, then you may get serious internal burns from induced current to your body. If it is just a cell tower (low power transceiver), then there's nothing to worry about. The thing is, if you feel any part of your body heat up (most likely your legs) then climb down and run!

if it is just a Cell tower you should be fine. i have one that is identical to your description that i hit regularly. it has that sign posted on the outside of the fence and at the start of the peg climb.

RF Safety Signs - The Basics

The message panel texts of these "NOTICE," "CAUTION," and "WARNING" signs all start with "Beyond this point: Radio frequency fields at this site..." with the remainder of each message declaring a different field level. It is important to know and understand the differences:

* "CAUTION" ... may exceed FCC rules for human exposure.
* "WARNING" ... exceed FCC rules for human exposure.

A "CAUTION" sign is meant to identify an area that has RF field levels that generally exceed the public limits, with a few isolated hot spots that exceed the human or occupational limits. Only qualified workers - workers who are fully aware and able to exercise control - should be allowed to enter these areas.

Good info. But look at my avatar to see an example that shows Caution/exceed, not Warning/exceed or Caution/may exceed.

I am not sure they are as standard as you suggest.

It is dangerous for sure. I have had a bad experience after being on a tower for an extended period. Head aches, throwing up, and dizziness...

Don't stay on too long, avoid transmitters..

I don't jump towers that are hot anymore, fuck that!
