Re: [austin116] Interesting video featuring Jimmy P
I have to agree. partly. The guy took time to learn some basics and made a good effort in skydiving first. This trend is inevitable. All extreme sports progress. However, we've lost over 22 BASE jumpers so far this year. It's not just because we have more jumpers, It's partly because some people, including low timers, are pushing the limits beyond reason. Super low altitudes seem to be more the norm. Newbies without enough mental and skill preparation. Even at Perrine which is easy and a great training ground, jumpers are pushing it beyond safe limits. Jumpers should save an extra second of pilot chute snivel time, on all jumps not just the bridge. We don't like putting a "D" by peoples name in the book.
Carl Boenish didn't start the sport of BASE as a stunt. It was his purpose to make it a sport that could be done with some safety. Trouble with BASE, unlike skydiving or some other extreme sports like climbing, skiing, surfing, etc, you don't have to prove yourself over years of competition to do the most difficult objects. The same is no longer true of some of the new BASE jumpers. As BASE jumping becomes more visible on TV, internet, etc. there will always be more people interesed in trying it without paying the "normal dues". It's up to us to figure out who can do it and who shouldn't. Mistakes are pretty costly in BASE. It's not just a carnival ride they saw on You Tube. It's up to us to tell them that.
