slower openings?
What are effective ways to slow down openings when slider down?

Now, does rolling the nose really slow down openings or just slow down inflation? I've only jumped slider down while rolling the nose on about 5 jumps and it seems like it slightly slowed down openings and inflation.

I have reoccurring neck problems for years and hard openings have triggered it lately. On jumps where I could do 2-3 sec delays, I find myself doing go and throws just cuz I'm scared about jacking up my neck again. Strengthening my neck now but wondering about slowing the openings for now

Shorter delay = slower air speed = softer opening

So your current approach of going hand held
and pitching sooner rather than later is the
smart and safer choice in my opinion.

There is nothing wrong with going hand held.
Less chance of PC hesitation and slightly
faster deployment than going stowed.

Here are things I do, not sure if it helps much
but friends of mine with more experience also
do some of the same things...

Primary Stow
1 wrap for short delays
2 wraps for long delays

Tailgate Band
2 wraps for S/L & 1 second delays
3 wraps for 2 - 3 seconds delays

Nose Presentation
Wrapped around the pack job for short delays
Left in the center for longer delays

Doing exercises to strengthen your neck is good.
Most important thing is to keep your head over
torso and your eyes on the horizon till fully open.

More applicable to SKY jumping than slider-down
BASE but here is what I am getting at. Lots of
guys try to look up as soon as possible, which I
think does two things: 1) puts your neck in the
worst position to take stress and 2) it actually
is more likely to screw up your body position
and in turn your deployment. The head is like
10 pounds and affects your center of gravity.

I really don't believe that you can do much packing wise to slow down your SD openings and even if you could I don't think that would be a smart move.

I suggest a good physiotherapist, shortening your delays, strengthening your neck and surrounding muscles and if the problem continues then re-thinking how much you really like SD jumps. Just jump subterminal slider up jumps, anywhere from 2-5 seconds should give you very soft, easy-on-the-neck openings with varying heading performance!

Or you could try one of these http://www.google.fi/...YQ9QEwAQ&dur=855

Don't know how they work for base but could be worth a shot. They are motocross neck braces meant for preventing neck injuries by limiting movements of the neck in the case of a crash.

Did somebody use these (A*, Leatt, EVS) on actual base jumps? Or maybe MX neck rolls with paragliding/downhill helmets.
Please post, it would be very useful input!

Re: [kege] slower openings?
Totally agree with kege. Don't start messing with your pack job. Think about it this way. Slider down is slider down. Your pack job should be ready for a perfect on heading, identical opening to the last one you did and the one before that. Fast and identical. You should be able to take it out the box and do a 130ft static line or a 3 sec delay. Once you start messing with it you could well accidently take a slow pack job by to a low jump........etc, do too longer delay etc, we all know the story.

Look to fix your neck or start going slider up, objects allowing.

If you feel like you are getting hammered on 2-3 second delays, there is the possibility that your brake settings are not tuned properly, and what you are experiencing as a slammer is in part due to forward surge of the canopy.

If they aren't tuned, good idea to do that anyway.

Re: [cheekybastard] slower openings?
yeah I've only taken a 3 sec delay s/d twice and both times I felt every bone in my neck crack. Honestly I do feel a forward surge but its very minor. I'll have to see if i can find some good video to see some openings. thanks!

and kege, I've got a motocross neck brace and was thinking about jumping with it, at least for awhile till my neck is good. Problem is that I would have to wear a motocross helmet (or similar?) with it for it to do any good. Maybe a mountain bike DH helmet. Same size, less weight.
