Congrats are definitely in order for the TandemBASE crew, and especially to you and Abbie for getting tandem BASE off the
ground bridge, but just to be clear,
World and Bridge Day tandem BASE #1 occurred in 1984, performed by Ted Strong and I doing a 3-second freefall with a 42-inch PC instead of a standard drogue.
RIP Ted Strong, BTW; he went in the day before Bridge Day test jumping his aerial ATV delivery system (info
here and
here). Ted not only created tandem jumping
per se, he was a great supporter of BASE in its early days, back when it was almost mandatory for old-timers to disapprove (he started jumping in the 1950s!), and he specifically learned to BASE jump so he could do a tandem BASE jump with his then-still-experimental system.
AFAIK, Ted hadn't BASE jumped in a while, but he kept his parachuting pedal to the metal to the end:
There he was skydiving hard at age 75 at the cutting edge test jumping one of his own creations on a beautiful autumn day with young-enough-to-be-his-children/grandchildren friends and colleagues who all lived to tell lies about his last jump.
Ted Strong will be missed but he lived large, long and with a heart full of love. Valhalla has now added a ballsy, brilliant gentleman to its ranks -- and I'm sure he was smiling down on Sean and Mario the day after he arrived.
