Compiling info on BASE arrests in National Parks
I am collecting information about BASE jumping arrests in National Parks in the United States. The reason for this project is to compile BASE arrests and compare them to other arrests (DUI’s, theft, assault, etc.) that are crimes with an actual victim. I want to evaluate the two different criminal laws and present it to congress, proving that the NP LEO’s and District Attorney’s are discriminating against our user group.

If you’ve been arrested for BASE jumping in a National Park, please send me a private message giving details of the outcome; fines, jail time, etc., to help get BASE jumping legalized, or at least raise awareness of the atrocious view that NPS has on us, an activity that is our passion… in our supposedly, free country.

Thank you in advance for your help.

If you are looking for a real statistical comparison, you should comb through the morning reports instead of relying on self-reporting from a demonstrably biased group.

was reading over the list of incidents compiled by base428. The one about the "sting" operation on BASE jumpers at NRG is too funny. Hell of a way to spend our tax $$$$ Crazy

ours was the last one on your list. oh the memories!! i'd like to ad some jumper commentary to that NPS Morning Report article (most of which is complete bullshit):

Ranger Glenn Yanagi, that day after court you told us you "did your research" so I know you read this website.....go fuck your self you filthy cocksucker!!!!!

That sting operation was headed by a ranger who is now working with the Boy Scouts. He opposed anything remotely related to BASE while he was a ranger.

If you want some really good stories, see me at Bridge Day and I'll tell you about the phone calls I've had with ex-rangers....

File a "Freedom of Information Act" request with the NPS. http://www.nps.gov/foia.htm

If you want to be a real pain, file an individual one in every NPS location.

When you file a FOIA request you are going to need to narrow your search parameters anyway. They will most likely require you to designate a particular park and what years you want them to search. They will search for you but will also charge you a fee for obtaining copies of those records. This will take some time to cover all of the parks that jumping can occur in because of the number of parks and because of the time it takes them to do a search.... a few weeks to a few months.
There can be good information gleaned from those records but unfortunately I dont think just showing it to bureaucrats will do much good unless it can help one of them politically win a campaign.

To get the outcome we are looking for we are going to have to do more than submit petitions hoping for a response and we need to do more than compile statistics and present those hoping for recognition of the unjust discrimination. In my eyes we need to take it to a whole different level by knowing and asserting our rights and follow through to the end and not be scared away by government or NPS's posturing. These attempts at being recognized are great but is there a plan for when they come back with the same crap excuse as before? How will we proceed or will we just accept their offer and walk away again? In just a few days we are about to have one of the largest gatherings of BASE jumpers, why don't we get together and discuss strategies on the best ways to proceed.

Ammon, how are you going to present your findings to congress? Do you have an 'in'?

Every FOIA request I filed was met with a letter asking for $2000+. Yes, you do have to narrow down the search and be prepared for them to charge you an arm and a leg.
