Solo BASE
I have never jumped alone before. I am at an area that is rather isolated & may not have much of a choice. I guess it really involves ones level of comfort, at this point I have the skill, but would really perfer if someone was there incase. May be just a security blanket thing, but I feel I need someone there. I would like to here from some solo jumpers out there & contigency planning & what not. I am a little drunk, parden the spelling errors. What is your plan if something hapens & your there alone, saw Faber's video a while ago... Just concerned....

Call a friend before you jump. Tell them "I am at <insert name of site here>. I am about to jump. If I don't call you back in one hour (or whatever is appropriate to the site), please send the (rest of the) coast guard..."

In boating, it's called a "float plan."

Fortunately now, beacon locaters are now an option. Rescue insurance is also a possibility with a good beacon.

Interestingly, I think solo jumps up the ante to an extente that it makes the jumper comtemplate much more, and the risk is much less than with a group.

I do this from time to time... but make sure you also have connection in the landing... It's not fun if you need to speed up a small mountain path like hell if you jumped a dam and find out there is no connection at the foot of the dam and your friend is just about going to call Rega Smile

Get a spot (http://www.findmespot.eu/). Solves the problem with the cell phone connection and also when you just femured from the dam, it is a bit easier just to press a button compared to calling to rega and start explaining to them where you are and what you just did.

Re: [maretus] Solo BASE
on my first solo jump i tried to answer my cell phone on the ladder during the first 20' of climb and dropped it. that jump was one of the most rewarding / memorable jumps i've ever made - i took my time climbing then sat at exit point for 40 min, part nerves, and part just enjoying it. much different experience to be by yourself 400' up a tower in middle of night. realized i was base jumping for me.

Re: [kcollier] Solo BASE
I do quite a bit of solos and the first few
times I wrestled with myself... as in why
the fuck am I up here alone? But when
I calmed down I knew why.

Most of the time I use a reliable friend
via cell phone, occasionally the signal
sucks, but that has never stopped me.

Re: [DAVE858] Solo BASE
I jump solo more than with other people and always have, not many people on my side of the state. Just call a friend like Tom said. Solo's are nice, climb at your own pace, and just enjoy the moment to yourself when your up there, just you, that jump, and God, very good moments can come from solo's just be safe.

I agree, I live in an area that has TONS of base jumpers, but I mostly jump solo. Opened 5 new objects solo this year which is kind of scary, but an amazing feeling.

Re: [hjumper33] Solo BASE
I jump alone a lot.I love jumping with people, but love being solo just as much.I have jumped high and low objects, opened objects, jumped naked, and pulled off some of my more challenging jumps solo.Just get into your own head space and the rest just seems to fall into place.
having virtual ground crew is a good thing as well and if you don't have to be super stealth, just talk to yourself out loud.it seems to work for me.

have fun!

Love solo BASE jumps. No gopro, no showing off, no egos, nothing but pure dead air. The way it should be.

Re:Solo BASE
I live about 4 hours from the closest active jumpers. So I do a fair bit of solo's, I find i'm a lot more cautious on them. I'll make the decision to climb down easier than with a group. I still always use a cell phone ground crew when I go out though..

Re: Solo BASE
solos are rewarding... but if you tell anyone or use any of the comforts like "phone crew", it isn't the same.

do a true solo and never tell anyone. those are precious.

Also, Think about it this way. Lets say you are jumping with a friend. He goes first and you are at the exit alone. When you jump, are you thinking about the person that just went? When you exit and open and fly and land, are you thinking about that person? Usually no. Right?! If you can capture that frame of mind and group of thoughts when you jump with someone else and use it on a solo jump, it makes it easier.

Call a friend, give them the location and a return call time window. If you get hurt and can get to advanced medical care with in an hour, you might be alright. If you get hurt and you jumping buddy calls 911, help is on the way. If you jump solo and you friend calls 911, help is on the way.

Just rember your phone can crash whith you, that the emergancy responders(central) wont belive a person calling a "perhaps injuryed or dead person in a not precice location",and there fore refuse to send medical help..

Trust me,THAT aint fun, i were lucky back in 02 that my wife did get out to the location and found me,2,5 hourse after i had jumped.. if not i would have replaced my open fib n tib for noththing,i would have been dead today...Theres a nice "blairwhich project" vid-w subtitles out there from this acsident

ever since i always wear morphine,a belt and a small (zafire) light on EVRY jump

I dont agree that phone crews cant be used on true solo´s,sure they can i have used crew from both DK UK and Italy while jumping in DK ...
When you were hurt first time solo BASE and you keep doing it you know your doing it just for your self

Lesson learned.
Just becourse you had a smart plan dosnt mean it works
Just becourse you think your a tough bastard you will easy be proven wrong as your laying there
Just becourse your a bad ass to solo dosnt mean you will enjoy dying alone in pain in the dark....

EDIT did try the spell chek but couldnt figure out so here you go

Re: [Huck] Solo BASE
first solo and first object opened on my 17th jump.

standing on the counterweight of the crane at 450 ft above the city, alone, and noone knows you're there is pretty special.

accessing building jumps alone is pretty scary, if you get busted, it's tough to talk your way out of..

Re: [Huck] Solo BASE
i did my first solo at my jump #5 at a object i opened at jump #4 whith a ground crew.My teacher had taken me off 3 jumps teahed me to pack and i went back home 400km´s from him..

I fucked up and nearly died at my jump #30 on a solo at the same object

My jump #31 were a solo at the exact same object 8,5month after my injury off the same exit.i used 1,5 hour to through my arse off the object

But know what? that wasnt smart at all, wasnt cool and i cant recomend anyone copying that shit off.
In fact i wont recomend people doing solos untill theyre all heads up on what theyre doing.. theres no reasson to do it and it easaly can kill you...

Besides drinking the beers alone, laughing by your self and drive back home alone aint that fun at the long run..

Gotta say that back in 02 as i started jumping i were the only in my region,i were untill a few years back,im still the only one in this region holding some how on to it,but gotta say im rather anoyed doing solos and jumping off antennas at this point, stopping has xed my mind but then from time to time a few guys makes me rethink and my conclusion is now that i cant sell my gear, and even as im not as active as a few years back i still enjoy doing a jump once in a while..But guess i turned old at some point..

I saw your video on skydivingmoovies.com back before I had ever made a BASE jump. Needless to say I learned from your experience. Thanks for sharing. I will make sure if I do go hit it, someone will know where I am at & when I am expected to return. The place is a bit isolated & cell service is questionable.

I did my first solo at jump 21 with a phone crew. I opened a new A and jumped solo without any ground crew or telling anyone at jump 26 which was about 30 minutes ago. Cool

Re: [DAVE858] Solo BASE
Im glad some one saw the point of my morphine made blairwich project :P
I thourght i had it all right it were a easy jump easy landing i had 27 prior jumps off this object whith in 2-3 months.
I had my cell phone my now wife knew when i started jumping and she even got my call just secs before i jumped off the exit.. I got a small issue that i think i responded corectly to,i then stalled the canopy but made a good choice again, probaly saving my butt, but the fackt that my foot got stuck in the mud while i were doing a PLF i hadnt thourght of that.. I did save my own life replacing the leg,ive got the docs word from that,i did act correctly by wrapping myself into the canopy while laying there, and i did correct making reports to the cam about how i felt(oh well beeing smartass to a certain point)in case i had black out when some one found me.
But all that wouldnt have saved my arse if Lene hadnt demanede her dad and her out there..1 more hour late sept and i would have been gone..

Its the first and only time in my life i yelled for help for real(and i never played whith that),i felt so humble soft, weak and a point in a possition at some point where i thourght i should die..

It changed my mind to BASE.Ive made most of my jumps solo afterwards actualy it turned me into a ego tripper, most people knows me from the internet, even as i love sharing an exit whith others but im only doing it for my self.In fact i developed a ego thing causing me a few "trubles" due other hobbyes i do,People tend to think its too risky to go solo wreckdiving paragliding or what ever you do,but i wouldnt miss it. it taught me to back off for MY reassons and not jumping by preassure of others, but thats also why i never(hold onto your pc)visited Kjerag og LB,i dont like the mentalyti i see on videos,i do belive that people tend to risk more then they would do on a solo, and to my world when you left an object your on your own,so if you cant pull it off while beeing solo you shouldnt do it at all..

Think carefully before you do solos. Most of my solos are whith a phonecrew,i call before i jump and again as i landed safly or is driving away. i Have aprox 20ish what people call true BASE,and honestly i dont think it gives that extra reward compared to the risk your pulling off,but some times when you need it all by your self,it can be a cool thing, but it is way more riski than whith a phone crew.

I gotta Ad that i got my first kid in 99 and 2.nd 2 years later,i had kids all the time ive been BASEjumping.BASE did cost me a divorce aswell,Lene is my 2.nd wife, and im 35 by next dec.

Jason, your a cunt but i miss you for sure.I still rember your first A,i realy enjoyed taking you.. and your epic ground crewing in 05 near Seatle where we had to teach you drive a manualy :-P
Now go buy the old man a beer and bring some hookersTongue
