Recent fatality at Eiger due to 400lb Dacron failure on a Feather
Hello everyone,

Following the posts over the last few weeks, I am surprised to see no comments on the recent fatality at the Eiger of Jeremy. My sincere condolences to Jeremey's friends and family.

I apologize if there has been a post on this topic and I have missed it.

My understanding is that 4 of the 400 lb Dacron lines broke below the A/B cascade after a tracking dive, using a Feather canopy.

This tragic event is also very scary for those of us using the recently introduced ultralight canopies with the 400 lbs linesets....

I understand that this has resulted in a recall of Feather caonpies to do some changes to the linesets...Does anyone know the details of the proposed changes and the reasons why?

I would appreciate any info/thoughts on this event/topic

Again, my condolences to Jeremy's friends and family.

I believe there were a few posts on this unfortunate accident. Here is the forum link that i read through from the Incident section. Matt (PGPILOT) had some good informative posts further down the thread regarding the feather canopy and the actions taken by the manufacturer.

Maybe you should have been more professional in discussing this topic with the manufacture and others directly involved in the investigation.

"Your understanding" as of now is ALLEGED. Just because there is a recall on these canopies does not warrant liability as you are implying.

You ask does anyone know the details of the proposed changes and reasons why? Really?..... you really are asking this??

I wonder who this "anyone" might be?

From the other thread on this topic:

In reply to:
"There are, without question, some major lessons to be learned here but adequate time is needed in order for the information to be presented in a manner that will best result in progress for the community and the sport. Rest assured that all details will be released as soon as possible and that the people working on this are working with the entire BASE community's best interest in mind."

This answer is more than good enough for me, and I have a vested interest in the issue. I'm eagerly awaiting my ultralight canopy with 400lbs dacron in the mail (from a different manufacturer). Things take time and I'm pretty sure the people involved have the best of intentions.

The reason there hasn't been much discussion of the incident, or at least the reason I've refrained from posting something, is because I really have no patience and use for conjecture. Which is what these threads generally degenerate into, absent of any solid information from knowledgeable people involved.

So here's to waiting patiently...

Unless I missed something the OP seemed very polite and professional with his post here.

For educational purposes. I too have been waiting patiently to find out if it was a line attachment failure or failure of the dacron itself. If it was indeed a failure of the dacron then was it due to factors present only on Feather canopies or should every one jumping 400lb dacron be worried regardless of the canopy manufacturer? Knowledge dispels fear and there are a lot of people out there who are keen to hear the answers.

Your repeated posts on how awesome Aylum is lead me to think you may be a little biased on this issue.

Why do you seem so upset about this post? I don't see any liability being implied in the original post. Maybe there is other communication between you two that I haven't seen. I find this thread very interesting as this is the first time I have heard about the lines breaking. I never saw the follow up posts from the original thread that was posted more than a month later. I just checked the BFL, which has no mention of lines breaking either, only a "possible gear malfunction."

Re: [Fledgling] Dumbass
+1 good post. I am also curious what caused the failure. Because of the grounding, I assumed it was something other than the 400lb dacron. I jump those lines on my fox, which is primarily a slider down rig (bought it used, thats what it had on it). So I am very curious to know the results of this investigation.

Personally, I think if it was a dacron issue, than Marty would have done more than only ground the feather. Plus what are the chances of having 4 lines fail all on the same jump? Either way I feel for him, and for the jumper. bsbd

I don't see anything wrong with the original post in this thread.

Heck, Bridge Day is only five weeks away, yet it was my wife who actually informed me of the issue less than a week ago since I don't read the forums that much anymore. It sure would be nice to obtain some kind of information about this issue before Bridge Day gear checks start....

One owner told me that his cascaded A/B center lines had been replaced with continuous A/B center lines. I have not verified with the manufacturer though.

I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer and asking for details of the upgrades. I'm sure many people would appreciate if you could post any information here.

We are all test jumpers anyway. Even in skydiving...
I base this on the number of tests done in other kinds of industries. Skydiving is relatively small, and base even smaller. Very few recalls of gear, general reluctance of grounding, unless there is no other choice which is usually the case after a fatality. Either accept this or don't jump I would say.
