Jeb Corliss in September National Geographic
Among a bunch of guys with flying gadgets, some living, some not so much, was a full two-page spread picture of Jeb in flight and some talk about his life-long ambition to fly to earth sans parachute.

I saw it in my dentist's office and wasn't able to scan it. I'm sure someone has a copy they can post.

The title of the article is: Can We Fly?. subtitle is: The Daring Dream of Personal Flight - From daVinci to NASA scientists, humans dream up schemes to soar like a bird. Are we there yet?

It seems to fit Jeb's whole life perfectly, doesn't it?

I think it’s kind of strange that Jeb gets so much publicity for something he dreams of doing. No disrespect to Jeb, of course, he’s an amazing athlete and very inspirational. It’s just a strange concept.

It kinda reminds me of a couple of badass free climbers who are working on the hardest free climb on El Cap, they haven’t sent it yet, but they get all kinds of press for something they haven’t accomplished.

I mean, we all have lofty goals and HUGE dreams but whether or not we achieve them, is an entire different story. Crazy

I completely agree. This has been marketed for at least more than five years. This project has reached the point of unachievable by Jeb (yes, an incredible jumper) to that of inspirational speaker.

There are two types of people in this world. Regardless of race, nationality, religion, height, weight, sex, sexual preference, class, and so on, there are only two. People who do things, and people who talk about doing things. With that said...

Please don't put Jeb on the same level as Tommy Caldwell. While both have done amazing things, Tommy Caldwell has actually been a pioneer in his sport. He has accomplished several first ascents and other firsts, and therefore earned the publicity not because of the route, but because of his past routes. He doesn't seek the spotlight, the spotlight seeks him. If he said he was going to climb to the moon, it would be worth watching because he will make it happen.

Jeb, if you log on and read this, how about letting this community know how the survivable bounce project is going (if it is a real project and not just a publicity stunt to help put food on the table).

yeah, and I was initially asked to help with Jeb's project, started assembling a team of NASA co-workers in the manned spaceflight program to help (with my rep on the line), and was called by his friend to let me know that he chose a different group to help, Vertigo Aerospace, which has most likely gone no where, due to their expense. That Cali aerospace firm does parachute work that includes landing science packages on other planets, which would unaffordable to any private venturer.

Re: [460] Jeb Corliss in September National Geographic
I have worked on projects that have taken 16 years to happen :) The wing-suit landing is very complex and very expensive :) It will take time and in order to raise the money needed we need to promote it.

If you guys would like it to happen faster you can always chip in with some cash :) Right now it's only 3.2 million, a total bargain at twice the price :)

By the way we are no longer working with vertigo inc. Not because they were to expensive but because they were purchased by the government and no longer work on civilian projects.

We now have a new group of engineers who are prefect for this type of project :) They have actually built many things very similar to what we are needing to build to land :)

It will happen and it will take time :) I will never give up no matter how difficult it is or how long it takes :) If someone beats me then they beat me but to be honest I am in no rush :)

I personally don't like to talk about projects before i do them but to raise this kind of money I have to promote. It was so much easier when projects were small and didn't cost anything :)

Sorry if you guys think it is a bad way of going about things but to be honest you can always do it any way you like when you decide to go for it :) I welcome any and all of you to try :) Come on, go for it, beat me to it :)

Re: [jeb] Jeb Corliss in September National Geographic
I think most of the BASE community would pitch in if they somehow felt a part of the project. But other then hearing that you are in this race to be the first, and then silence, I figured there was no real plan. Its a small, tight community...I may not speak for everyone, but I would be proud to have been a contributor, and a part of the BASE community when this gets completed. If no one else, keep us in the loop.

Btw, go after downey fabric softners to sponsor te event. If you could land on fresh bed sheets that would do wonders for my stock shares.

I was NOT dissing TC in any way, (noticed how I left out names) I have a ton of respect for the guy and consider him a friend. I was simply pointing out that the media might get a little over zealous on what they report... IMO, they (the media) should wait until they accomplish their goal before spraying about their achievements.

Jeb

It's not that complex. That claim is what puzzles me about this project. It has a clear engineering direction and particular goals that are achievable. $3.2 million for any significant project is really not that much. I have no clue why it's been stuck in limbo for this long. Particular systems from preexisting military and aerospace and automobile fields could readily make this project at least studied at a feasibility level. If the project cannot be funded from an engineering standpoint, then maybe from a "hey, watch me die needlessly" standpoint - buy a ticket to watch me die.

Again, China is an expensive project, couldn't do it on my own, had to promote :) Do you have any idea how crazy expensive it is to get helicopter in china :) Trust me when I say it's way more then I can afford :)

Well Chris, if you think it is so easy then do it :) I will be happy to either except the money from you once you have raised it or watch you land your self :) Either way it will get done and the whole community will be better off. So go for it, get this small amount of money that is so easy to raise :) It's not that amount of money is hard to get. It's the amount of money mixed with the high risk of the project :)

i didn't think it was going to be this hard to raise that amount of money either :) Turns out i didn't know shit till i actually tried :) It's amazing how much you learn when you actually go out in the world and try to do things that have never been done before :)

Like I sad, if you think you can do better then go out there and do better :) Don't just sit there and criticize. Go raise the money and beat me to it :) I will be the first to shake your hand because I actually know how hard this really is...

Then, there has to be a better solution to raising the money.

There's a difference between being critical of a person and thinking critically. You are still an amazing jumper. I have no interest in landing a wingsuit. Special Ops or the National Space Security Office might be interested but I think the technology is too primitive for them.

Re: [jeb] Jeb Corliss in September National Geographic
Um...if you've got the right guanxi it's free. Considering the dearth of civil aviation in the PRC, I'm assuming you're jumping a military bird, and from what I know of how that whole thing works, most of your expenses probably came from buying big ass banquets with sea cucumber, shark fin soup, bird's nest, and all that happiness, plus some bottles of the right baijiu. Dui ma?

Edit: and I'm not hating, bro. I've been up on that shan; It's sick and I wish you guys the best with that. It's a rad project and I don't envy all the work you and S. have undoubtedly done to make it happen. China ain't easy!
Shortcut
Re: [stinkydragon] Jeb Corliss in September National Geographic
Jeb does not drink "baijiu" or any alcoholic beverage as far as I know. He's a health oriented sort of guy, except of course for risking his health via daredevil-ing.
Shortcut
Re: [460] Jeb Corliss in September National Geographic
I've never tasted any of the baijiu I've gifted people either. I'll drink the stuff, but it's kind of bad form to expect someone to open a bottle you just gave them as a gift.
