if you cant get an idea of how much experience anyone has in anything you are the one who sucks, just have a conversation with said person, it will usually give you all the shit you need to know... or try dragging their ass up a 1400ft antenna that thins the herd pretty quick as well.

You can have 20 years in the sport and still suck a bag a dicks. I promise you I jump more in a week than you do a month... I only have a few objects but i have over 40 sub 1500 ft. Base rig jumps since march.

That sounds like a fancy way to say skydives. Lame

 

ive been straight forward since day one of skydiving. personally, the FIRST thing i say to new BASE jumpers that i meet is that i am a complete NOOB, with only 50 BASE jumps and that though my mentor taught me everything he could for the time we spent together, i still am inexperienced and also i have walked away from several BASE jumps of my own free will.

i dont expect everyone with experience to take me out on their objects, but so far most people in the new places i move to have been good to me...........

epibase - i lied about some things when we first jumped together. i was actually a seasoned base jumper emplyed by a secret government agency tasked with determining whether you had the skills to be involved in clandestine investigations in to the extent of rampid douchebaggery present on internet forums. things were going just fine until the drugs took hold.

if your new buddy from nevada gets in touch, give me a shout, i'd like nothing more than to see you get in a fight.

 

 

I have had 2 jumpers in the past lie to me to get on a load. One was Cheeky and I saw right through it. The other one really wasnt lying, but exaggerated a little bit. I didnt find out until after the jump but he did fine on it all the same.

You are trying to apply normality to BASE. It doesnt work out. think about it deeply and you will discover what is life.
Tip: watch them pack and see if they can pack without explaining.

It is happening more because BASE is cool and being a noob is not cool -- and on top of that, there's a lot more lying by more people about everything these days, not just base jumping.

Having said that, we also face a situation where there are dozens of "potato jumpers" -- peeps who have a boatload of sub-terminal bridge jumps and no experience doing anything else. I remember meeting a couple of Japanese base jumpers several years ago in Tokyo. They each had about 25 jumps, yet their knowledge, skillset and JUDGMENT far otustripped most of the 400-jump wonders swaggering around the potato fields because every one of their jumps was from a building in one of the most congested cities in the world, so their site assessment skills, canopy handling, and -- most important of all -- assessment of their own abilities was off the charts.

So given the arrogant-by-virtue-of-meaningless-jump-numbers poseurs now polluting the community, it is not unreasonable for people to lie about their numbers so they don't have to put up with that.

Unfortunately, a significant number of the liars have the same problem as the poseurs they're trying to circumvent: they don't have the "assessment of their own skills" part down yet.

i made my first "real" base jump w/ epibase, had maybe 12-15 jumps from perrine and bd at the time. was a rude awakening finding out first hand just how much i didnt know.

I jumped my first tower last night. I knew i was ready for the jump.....then i jumped. Took me a second to get to my toggles and in that time i had flown out over the trees a bit and didnt think i was making it back (neither did my mentor or my GC). At that moment it hit me that i was nowhere near ready for this stuff. It was an instantaneous feeling of dread, then i landed just a bit short of where i should have and walked away. No amount of skydives perpares you for this, from a BASE jumpers perspective 200+ skydives, months of packing and mentor lessons, and a few jumps at the perrine is adequate if not good preperation, however in reality i dont see how anyone can ever be ready, you just need to minize the number of variables on each jump, one being dont jump stuff other people think your not ready for. My 5th jump at the Perrine i went stowed, i knew i shouldnt have, and i knew most people would have told me to wait, but i wanted to make sure i had at least one stowed jump from that object before i went stowed back home in the future (with Jimmy and Martas permission). At the exit all i kept thinking about was that most people would be telling me not to do this just yet. The jump went fine but body position wasnt great, i was a little head high and had my knees bent in at the waist, all because i wasnt thinking 100% about the jump on exit. Just knowing that other people would tell you not to do something, even if you lied to them to make them think you are ready just introduces extra shit to think about and increases the mental complexity of the jump. So i can see why Epibase is getting upset.

BTW i really just wanted to brag that i got my first A last night lol

asgard - i was talking to your mentor about a day or two ago, before he took you out there. last time i jumped that A, winds were high but steady at opening alt. i was on my toggles quickly and still opened, immediately flew over the trees and had to hook 180 and land back towards the tower (jumped the side directly opposite of the building). glad you made it, thats a nice tower, and about the easiest / safest object around here, that i know of. welcome to base jumping.

Why do you think this? The vote says only 6% have lied and think it was ok. 6% have lied and regretted it. The rest have not lied.Seem likes small % of liars to me.

I've always been upfront and honest with people about my lack of experience and inabilities. Lucky I have good friends that have shown me some exit points I'm kind of ready for and ones they have told me I'm not and I'm more than fine with that. I also have soloed a couple objects that were new to me I was comfortable with. I'm fine with people telling me no I wouldn't want to put anyone in a uncomfotable position and value the advise of more experienced jumpers. There are plenty of people out there that wouldn't want to even jump the potatoe bridge with me but that's how it goes.

I too am enraged and appalled by this.  These out of control shenanigans must stop or the new punk kids will ruin everything!! In fact, I am so mad about this subject that I am even going to use the angry emoticon.  

See! There, I did it.  Fortunately, there are little faces to accurately describe the intense emotion I am currently feeling.  If you could see me right now, you would see that my eyebrows are furrowed with intense disdain and annoyance now just like this emoticon.

 In fact, if I were angry and in the woods, then some unassuming hiker would likely be greatly concerned over the possibility of being violated by a large 4-legged mammal.  Not that I would ever violate a hiker, but you can bet your ass that rutting moose would!

When I was instructing at Kjerag, The liar students really diminished the chance to learn. Because they had lied about experience, they wouldnt ask for advice. Then I had to lie and say I saw their totally screwed exit (other jumpers told me) and to meet me the next morning for a free exit training.
This worked normally quite well except where one bounced on his 1st jump. 250skydives, lied about BASE Jumps. Not so bad in general. He was the only liar that bounced there to this day as far as I know.

agree with 283, was thinking the same thing. there is a fundamental flaw in your poll - asking liars how much they lie... although the poll is anonymous, i suspect someone who lies to get on a basejump probably lies to themselves on a regular basis / personal level. from a fuortune cookie i got once: "Love many, trust few, row your own canoe" Not sure that applies here, but when in rome...

There are pathological liars. Peeps that can lie faster than you can think. This is life. Why should BASE be diff? In my lifetime, I have dealt with at least 5 PLs. 3 were jumpers (?). In a world that anything can happen, some things happen. Watch them pack.

im living in close quarters with one of those types right now. its pretty fuckin obvious who is a pathalogical liar quickly. though ive never met one in the BASE world, im sure they will make it obvious quick.
