Carl Boenish - The Australian Connection
Hey BASE brothers & sisters, I need somewhere to post some stuff on Australian BASE history that was previously hosted on another site that was password protected, and then the posts were removed. I need a place that Google search-bot can access for search for these stories of Aussie BASE poineers and BJ.com is my choice.
Over the next month or so I will add these posts here on this site. May I start with some letters from Carl Boenish to my good friend Mark Hay. Mark was one of Australia's premier f/fall photographers in the early 80's and had sent Carl some pic's of the World's first legal cable car jumps (Australia's 17th, 18th & 19th BASE jumps). Carl was "blown away" by the feats and wrote to Mark to start a correspondence to try and log Australia's BASE jumping activities. The following year saw Mark Hay and Trevor Yates travel to the US to stay with Carl & Jean and flick a few objects. Upon his return, the correspondence continued.
I scanned the following letters and pics and they are presented here with generous permission from Mark Hay. Meeting with Mark not too long ago he reflected how he didn't know just how much significance these letters would have today.
I will post the pics and details from the famous Katoomba Cable Car jumps in the weeks to follow, along with other early Aussie stuff.
