Getting High
Anyone have experience landing at or above 10,000 feet (3,050m)?
Ive got 1200+ skyjumps, 300+ base, of about 40 jumps or so landing at 5000 feet or more. I did not notice much difference from when i land 100 feet msl. i had to adjust my flare to have a little more umph at the bottom end, but landings were just as soft.

What about pilotchutes? Say opening altitude is 11,000 feet or so? Thats planning to open about 500' above valley floor.
I normally use a 36" for terminal,

Could the burble be longer in higher altitudes? could this be a good reason to use 11' bridle rather than 9'?

All this is considering a clear sunny day, with average pressure at the altitudes discussed above?

Thanks,

Re: [freeflyinfool] Getting High
I wouldn't make any gear changes, but my only experience is slider-down around 9,500 feet.

11-foot bridle is just asking for a mess.

Highest I have landed is around 11,500' MSL. The landings were faster than normal but not bad. If you are aware of the flight differences, know your lz and get set up properly, it isn't very dramatic. I did use a bit of front riser though and I started a 2-stage flare a couple of feet higher than normal. I would avoid flaring low or landing in deep brakes or downwind if you can help it.

Re: [freeflyinfool] Getting High
Interesting post on a subject that's dear to my heart. I learned to skydive at 9000'msl. most of my jumps are at 5000'msl. I have a # of BASE jumps exiting from 14,000, and 13,000 and landing in the 12,000 to 12,500 area. while i would not claim to have experience at the highest landings I would hazard to guess that I have more high altitude landings than anyone that I've met, (I presently have 14,000 jumps logged....written in log books, not a figment of my imagination....actually 14,008). My experience has been that High altitude landings are not extreme, it is more noticeable to go to sea level and thick air (I am presently jumping in Norway), than it is to regularly jump in thin air. That said, the biggest problem I've noticed people have,... is swoopers and classic accuracy jumpers coming to higher altitudes from sea level. My feeling is that high altitude landings on a good day don't feel that much out of the ordinary. One thing I am convinced of though is that if you are base jumping a wing suit in thinner air, (5000' to 14,000' MSL), you should take into account that in subterminal air,(BASE) you will notice a significant lack of performance early in to the jump. again I am no expert, this is just a personal opinion, ...be very careful if you are BASE wingsuiting from unusually high and marginal exit points. I would be very interested to hear from people who have more experience than me in these areas, and who disagree with me, because I have some potential projects that would benefit from everyone's knowledge and experience, Thanks, B.

?? including skydives? or do you have the most base jumps of anyone in the world

Re: [freeflyinfool] Getting High
No, combination of skydives and Base jumps, only 672 BASE, but a high % of my jumps(skydive and BASE) have been at high altitude, and I feel I have a pretty good fix on higher than average landings. I began skydiving 30 years ago landing at 9000' msl. I am looking at a wingsuit project at an exit altitude of over 20,000' and expect to do one soon from an exit altitude of 14,000' so I really enjoy this topic of discussion and am extremely interested in hearing from people that have experience at higher elevations and especially if they have a different point of view than me. thanks for continuing the discussion. sincerely,B.

Re: [StealthyB] Getting High
Still, 672 BASE jumps is a lot by any standard.

Whatever.....hee hee ;) ...... Everyone who jumps the 14,000 ft exit (except you) always wish they had their largest canopy.... or borrow mine. You know that my high alt. landing #'s are non existent, but don't you think bigger is always better..... I know...... lets ask hunpty-dumpty. .....

on another note....... hope you are doing well over there, and when I saw the thread title, shit I was gonna claim to have written the book on it. .... till I read the thread :)
Be good over there. go get some buddy !
