New York and a legal question
Hi all

A little background. I'm a jumper from Europe, 350 skydives and 20 base jumps.

I moving to NYC in September on an L-1A visa and wondered if anyone knows the implications of getting caught by the officials whilst on a "less than legal" jump in the States. Is it possible I could lose my visa, get deported etc..? From what I can find out I do not hold the same legal "rights" as a citizen even though I am a resident.

I'm no lawyer and my eyes bleed every time I try sus it out.

Aside, I can't wait to hook up with the crew in NYC, give me a shout.

Cheers guys, Jonny.

You may be better off not being a US Citizen as they do not have 'Rights' but are only granted 'privileges'.
Although you are entering the US from a privilege granted by them so you are probably screwed as well Tongue

Re: [ukjonr] New York and a legal question
I know a foreign jumper that was here on a Visa and got caught a couple of times, he just played the role of "Oh sorry I didn't know I was not allowed to do that" to which the officer replied "ok then get out of here so I don't have to do the paperwork" others who got caught in the same scenario wound up in court. This happened several times to this jumper and at least once to another that I know of so you are probably good to go but you never know anything could happen. I would definitely not jump in NYC though that is another story entirely.

NYC is pretty hot right now...only a few locals...20 BASE jumps will probably not prepare you for it...I know some locals though and there are a few decent jumps upstate that are much lower bust factor...prove yourself there and maybe they will take you to the City or maybe they will not...

There is no NYC "crew"...

I've heard of a Terrorism charge if you are above the 5th story in NYC though...might be even worse for you if you are a non-citizen...

Cheers,
Brian

do you intend on jumping in nyc? as was said earlier 20 BASE jumps will not prepare you to make the right decisions when shit hits the fan. I'm not going to sit here and convince you that NYC is more dangerous or has a higher bust factor than anywhere else in the world, even though I believe both to be true. In the end its all up to you. Regardless you did the right thing by trying to get in touch with the locals. PM sent

Cheers guys, got PMs from a few locals already which is cool.

As for jumping in the City, not yet...

Still not clear on the implications of being an expat getting busted though. Any more advice would be awesome.
