Good helmet...in your opinion
Hi all, in your experience what is the best helmet for base jump?
Good protection against strike, lightweight and camera joint friendly?

Thanks to all for the response

Re: [mariobat] Good helmet...in your opinion
buy a paragliding helmet with integrated chin cup. it should have a airsport aproval.
also a bmx-helmet or similar is fine.

in the 21st century there is no need for heavy cameras and stupid looking mountings.
buy a action cam like the gopro and use the scotch pads to attach the cam. don't drill a hole into the schockabsorbing shell of the helmet. it destroys the helmet. and a screw in your head is less nice than a concussion.

never use one of those exaggerated expensive skydiving helmets.
those helmets are for cam mounting and soft collisions. the padding inside is for comfort and not really for shock absorbing (what is the most important part on a helmet.)

i use a skiing helmet for 40euro and 2 gopros (520$) (foto/video) check attachement.
in skydiving and base.
it's light, cheap and much saver than a skydivehelmet 168g per gopro and maybe 300gramms for the helmet

and on my helmet there is no need for a quick release. if the gopro mount will not break first when catched by a line i just pull hard on the chinstrap clip to break it and release the helmet.

well, the helmet don't look cool or professional but i guess i'll have better chances to stay pretty like i am now after i hooked myself in or went into a wall then a jumper with a simple skydive helmet. Cool

cheers

I'm personally a big fan of full face helmets since I really appreciate the jaw protection. I agree that majority of the skydiving helmets offer very limited protection and are also very expensive. But then again if you go for a very good ski helmet, they do not come very cheap either. I'm yet to find a well base suitable full face outside skydiving helmets so therefore I choose to use the Factory Diver. Super light weight, very tight and good fit and very good protection. The norwegian sweet has a full face which comes quite close but for my taste it is a bit too bulky for tracking and WS : http://www.sweetprotection.com/...fullface&pid=121. If I would be rich I would most likely buy one of those for SD and use my factory diver for SU.

Re: [mariobat] Good helmet...in your opinion
I’m new to BASE and just bought the sixsixone full face helmet. I skydive with a full face helmet and feel as though it will make me a bit more comfortable on the exit (Jaw protection and familiar feel). I’m going to remove the visor since it can possibly snag a line. I’m not even worried about mounting a camera for awhile since I need to focus on my jumping first so I’m not sure the best way to mount a camera to that model but the scotch pads sound like a good idea. It really doesn’t seem to restrict any visibility but I think that might be because I’m used to wearing a full face helmet already (as in it might be restricting parts of my vision that I am not aware of and that I really should be seeing). Would appreciate any thoughts or comments on this from experienced jumpers who use this model or similar setups. I know APEX recommends this on their site so that did help in my decision a bit.

Icaro makes awesome helmets for air sports, I have been using one for quite some time now for skydiving, base, and paragliding and actually just got my 2nd from them.

They have full face with and without a visor and non full face with and without a visor. I have smashed my head in to stuff and have used and abused their gear and can fully endorse both it's quality and style.

Plus they look pretty Bad Ass in pictures and video and we all know that is the most important thing anyways.

Oh and if you want to order one I can hook it up as well just let me know :)

i use a full face mountain bike helmet. you can get a cheaper one for about 50 dollars up to about 300 dollars. the difference in price is weight. take off the visor. they are light and offer great protection. good luck and hope you never need it.

get the nicest 661 you can afford and pull the visor off.

motocross is too heavy.

Re: [avenfoto] Good helmet...in your opinion
So are all the 661 helmets relatively light in weight??

I'm searching for a lightweight fullface helmet, but I'm not into ordering it online.
I found a place that sells the ProTec's fullface helmets.

Does anyone have experience with these helmets?

Sorry dude...just watching your avatar over and over. haha. What was the question?

Re: [cmckzjr] Good helmet...in your opinion
I jump with the pro-tec auger. It is a nice helmet and I got it pretty cheap on-line. I also have a friend with the 661 that is on the apex site (she got it at the local downhill bike shop). of the two, the 661 is lighter and slightly smaller. Between the two I would recommend the 661 as the auger is large enough that when under canopy the face portion catches on the risers if you try and turn your head 90 deg to the side. but then again maybe my head is too big or my risers are too close together Unsure

Re: [theschrund] Good helmet...in your opinion
I guess my head is pretty big too, i need a size Large....so I'll leave the Auger Tongue
I found a place that sells the ProTec Shovelhead, but also the 661 COMP2(that's on the APEX site). I'm probably going for the smallest&lightest..

I use a Bolle snowboard helmet. Very light, good impact protection. Got it for $40

Re: [mariobat] Good helmet...in your opinion
good helmet?
best helmet?
huh?

are you doing 5 hour hikes or trying to scurry through tight spaces?

cliffs or bridges?

wingsuit?

different people, jumping differently, generally will recommend different gear. plus few people have lots of jumps trying out multiple helmets. Unsure thus they will always recommend what they wear.

generally, just wear A helmet!

Re: [mariobat] Good helmet...in your opinion
I like this model. It offers good jaw protection without fully encapsulating the jaw, which is kind of a big deal for me because of my big beard.

maybe learn how to build a proper rig and you wont have risers that are too close together?

amateurs dude, fuckin amateurs!!!

i use a cheap model from bell mountain biking, its super light weight and offers in my opinion the most jaw/face protection out of all the cheaper models. looks fuckin beast as well

What about those new skiing helmets with the itergrated fighterjet style visor? I heard the ruroc ones rob to much periferal vision with the supplied goggles.
