BASEquest
"BASE Quest is an up-coming adventure documentary TV series which will follow the lives of two Namibian dudes, Timo Roemer and Nic Louw, as they tour around scenic Southern Africa for three months, training to attain their life long dream of becoming B.A.S.E jumpers and recieve their long awaited Base numbers. In order to complete their quest, they will be clocking up a whopping 250 sky-dives"

Skydives - 30..

"Here the boys will be introduced to basic freeflying, formation skydiving, be resizing to a smaller canopy and prepare for the attainment of the skydiving B-license.
Depending on progress, some the guys will attempt swoop-ponding. This is a highly dangerous jump with a small parachute where you skim water at high speeds"

So these guys come to SA, film on our exit points and then fuck off back to Namibia and post all our sites on youBoob.....
FUCK THAT!

Some things are done in life not for the money, but the memory, to me BASE is one of those things and it grates my tits when I see shit like that.Mad

If they are really trying to swoop at 30 skydives, I suspect this will be a self correcting problem. They may never make it to any of your exit points.

Re: [Scubadivemaster] BASEquest
Don't worry, 30 jumps is actually the jumps per episode. On top on the 25 in Episode 1 they actually have a massive 55 jumps.

Ok, my reply was a hot headed one and i should think before I speak, my bad Blush

Still, it doesn't fill me with warm fuzzy feelings when a couple of dudes who don't even skydive ask our crew for a list of all our exit points. My only intention is to protect the sites we have open for our current and future base jumpers, them included.

We are trying to build good, strong relationships with the authorities at the sites we jump and get people like mountain rescue on our side. I don't think that publishing footage of those sites before we have them on board would help our case. The slider up site at the Berg is sensitive at the moment and after the last false alarm they seem to be very unimpressed with us.

No worries though, this is just me voicing my concerns. I will contact them directly and ask them not to publish anything from the sites we are currently working on.

interesting..........many people, myself included, take years to learn to jump, travel, meet people, network, get trained in how to BASE jump, etc. etc. this is a process, and usually not too quick of one, to gain the trust of the experienced folk and get them to take you to their sites...............

just because people have a bunch of money, and video cameras, and a budget, and producers, they think that they can skip the most important parts that exist inbetween the first skydive and the first BASE jump? that shit is fuckin stupid.............

but i suppose in the long run i will just keep doin what i do, live and let live, and get my jump on when i can.

I mastered tic-tac-toe in less than an hour and
that was probably around the age of six/seven.

Later I played Super Mario Brothers, took much
longer to save the princess and was a bit more
satisfying.

Learning how to Skydive, Swoop, BASE jump,
do Aerials, do Tandems, shoot video/stills, etc.
all took years + many, many jumps and I am
still learning new techniques all the time.

Sure, I am old, ginger, and not near as gifted
as some, but part of the satisfaction comes
from the dedication required to improve.

SKY - BASE - Swooping should not be turned into
some quick, 30-minute, weak ass, McHappy shit.

Right On Green Machine. Since we issue the BASE numbers, I try to stay out of these posts, but any person who does not understand that skydiving experience is very beneficial to BASE jumping, simply does not know enough to realize that they don't know enough. I will say, BASE has been successfully done with no skydives as early as the mid 80's whan a guy I know was the first to earn BASE and had never had a skydive. He did made a hundred canopy flights down a hill with friends holding a square out to inflate. He was a newbie but paid attention and kept it up for years. Sometimes I fear that the equipment is getting so foolproof in this sport that we may be fooling people into trying it that really don't understand the real nature of the risk. So long as everything works, an inexperienced jumper can do fine. But, on BASE jumps, we do not have the luxury of time. The more hours of freefall time and canopy time you have, the quicker you can react appropriately to minimize the chance of injury when things go wrong. The equipment, training, mentoring and knwledge is all expanding, but the BASE jumper's most valuable tool is the brain which controls instincts and reactions. The more airtime you have, the better chance you have of making the right decision in the least amount of time.
Good Luck out there folks, but it's a good idea to do a little walking before you try to run.

very well put, coming from one of the stupid ones that took the ultimate shortcut. Rick knows my story cuz I just applied for my base number. Ive been lucky and have not had to deal with a 180 yet or had to make a quick decision that I am not prepared for. I dont think anyone would ever recommend skipping the right steps especially those that did.

Well, it will be interesting to see what happens. There are no second takes when reality TV becomes a little too real... As far as comments being too harsh, I would be pretty mad if one of these guys showed up in my area & went in on one of my sites that i worked hard to open.... That is always a possibility. The South African crew has every right to be upset.

RealityTV Sucks
The dialogue, vocabulary, sentence structure,
etc. on television was of a higher caliber years
ago when writers wrote scripts and the speakers
would practice for the performance.

Sure things are realer and less staged now but
the quality of content has plummeted in my
opinion and personally chose not to watch.

However, I think the people who do watch and
especially younger, less education, viewers
emulate those piss poor speech patterns.

I was told by a friend who worked some 70's
presidential campaigns and got to meet/drink
with Hunter S. Thompson, he copied Dickens

This movie is one my favorite documentaries:

do know up front that if you give them the exit information, expect it will be on youtube or on the tv show.. the show will say everything to get what they want, then burn them to the ground. ask many people who have done interviews with the media.. oh please dont show this or write that,, then what happens,, the write it or show it.... you have good reason to keep your spots private from yahoo's. especially ones with a tv crew. the media's only goal is to make $$ and they will mow down anyone in their path. use caution.

Bump....

These guys have a new face on the same old BS plan:
http://www.footloose.com.na/index.html

A base jumper from overseas apparently met with them and did NOT approve of their ethics, he said it was more about the fame than the love of BASE and the sky.

Even if they drop the camera's they will now not get my support. The rest of the JHB base crew has backed me on this.

Please don't support the cause.

Ok just to clear a few things up here.

My name is Timo, and we wanted to create a documentary on how we get into the sport of BASE jumping called BASEquest. Having never done such a thing before made it quite a difficult endeavour. In order to get funding for the documentary has to be appealing for the broadcasting corporations. So we tried to make it as interesting as possible, and yes by all means we got quite a bit carried away. We created the website (basequest.tv) at a very early stage and before anything was properly planned. Shouldn't have done that, but you got to start somewhere, and we didn't know where. We never got round to removing the episode guide, which was more of a early wishlist anyways. But you gotta dream big to go anywhere in life. Life will correct and set you on the right path anyways. And yes by no means can you swoop after 60 jumps(this would be a self correcting problem). And downsize so quick. Thats actually pretty stupid.

Anyways so we learn. We haven't recieved any funding from any broadcasters, so BASEQuest is not happening. But I guess that this is a good thing. However we refused to hand in the towel, and have now come up with a different idea.

We are inviting 6 Base jumpers and skydivers from all over the world and have them experience africa in a different light, and be Footloose in Africa. its a 69 day roadtrip boogie through Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. Its not all about the jumping, but there will be lots of it.9+DZ's, balloons, helis, paragliders etc. Its a culmination of 8 people and their love for the sport in one group project. We all film each other and create a awesome travel and adventure webseries.

At the moment, me and Nick are in Swakopmund and are skydiving and training hard. Yes it is way harder than it seemed but we are slowly but surely getting there. We are going to have 150 skydives before footloose begins and then do another 100 along the way. And yes me and Nick are getting into BASE, but by no means will we be jumping any advanced sites. No need to rush cause that might be the last one. We'll leave all the big ones for the more experienced jumpers on the trip. And I believe that there is not only one way to do something. Yes most people take years to get into the sport and find the time to get experienced. But we are now training full time for it. On every single skydive we do, we got one thing in mind, and that is BASE. And we do 3-4 a day now. Being frequent is advantageuos i believe.

Which brings me to your comment Dan. I dont know which little imaginary birdie told you that an european BASE jumper did not approve of our BASE ethics. What a load of BS. Please make sure that you have proof before saying things like that.

And yes we totally understand that you guys dont want to have your hard worked exits filmed and disclosed. We would have never revealed the locations anyway, and its not our aim to splash exits all over the web. We just want to film the adventure and excitement, which unfortunately happens at the exit point, and JHB is an awesome place with cool exits. But now answer me this. It seems like you are very camera shy. Would you really be into BASE jumping if you would not have seen it before on and be inspired by some awesome video. Ah didnt think so. If nobody would be filming anything, 95% of people wouldnt even know what a boat is, cause they all live on the main land.

But its cool, I have no hard feelings, I mean your opinion is your opinion. But don't be hatin(as they say) just because we are different to you. it takes many people to make the world go round. And if you JHB guys still feel the same when footloose starts, we have no problem turning our indicators on and driving right past JHB.

Cheers and have a good day

Timo

I gotta hand it to you. You guys seriously have some balls thinking you can pull this off. I fail to see how you will get any experienced BASE jumpers to pay you to take them around when they could just spend some money on beer and gas and maybe a few hotel rooms and get the locals to show them good BASE sites and not sites that you guys think you know about.
Local BASE jumpers=good BASE info
Non-Local BASE jumpers=possible good BASE info
Non-Jumpers=questionable BASE info
non local non-jumper= possible stupid BASE info.

I wish you good luck.. it certainly is a different way to get into BASE. Usually it's the other way around... the less experienced students pay the more experienced teacherSmile

Hi base570,

We are working together with the locals, just not all of them. Anything else would be foolish, I agree with you 100%.

Then, also nobody is paying us. Everybody is paying for themselves for their own trip and experience. Thats why its called Footloose, everybody can choose what they want to do. This is not some money making scheme. It is just an organized 69day roadtrip with lots of fun stuff including some BASE jumping on the way and at a very cost effective price. To travel for 69 days, seeing everything we are visiting doesn't get much cheaper, unless you couch surf.

In reply to:
Howzit everyone - happy Monday :-) ... Just a clarification: the BQ guys are good guys - very eager and enthusiastic - I like them and I wish them well! BASE however is not just another "cool sport" (you know exactly what I mean) and this I believe still needs to sink in with them... You don't just go jump off something because you have a rig, and that is why I said NO to packing their rig for an actual jump. Once they've done a couple of hundred skydives, have PRO ratings, have met some of you guys, then maybe the step towards BASE makes some sense. But to star in a movie on the subject adds more pressure and increases risks (those who've done this also know) and in my mind should not be the motivation to become "BASE jumpers"... So I do wish them success on their path but surely hope they stay safe and don't take shortcuts and that whoever helps them does so responsibly. Peace :-) r.

If it's just about the road trip and the love of skydiving, BASE and the sports, why not put down the cameras and do the same trip without the cameras?

I've told you I would be more than willing to assist without any, but please explain what you are getting out of this by making it public and filming it all?

Then why don't you finish putting in the work, become a BASE jumper, bond with people and make real friends, take a 69 day trip with them, film everything along the way, edit it & title it footloose, and upload it to youtube like everyone else? Because what you've just described is an average base excursion, you're just bedazzling the vignette. IMO sounds like you're eeking your way into BASE by means of a cheesy "wooo me so crazy" gimmick, only, it's not an appealing gimmick because you aren't even paying anyone. Base jumpers taking a trip with other base jumpers would be more gratifying than taking a total stranger who can only gc. Again, IMO Unsure
