BASErs can screw up (I can produce credentials on being the one of the most experienced big wall GC in the world) time after time and live and think it is normal.
I viewed the videos at the police station in the fatality investigations. The jumps before the fatal one pretty much shows the latter part of your statement

There are many aspects to
BASE jumping, some have
solid skills in every area
(I am not one of them.)

However, some jumpers,
in both SKY and BASE, are
much more likely to bounce.
