Mac Advice Please
Hey Gang,

I have a Mac G5 with dual 1.8 processors,
dual hard drives, 8 gigs of Ram, and it
is running 10.3.9 OSX.

BUT the operating system is out of date,
can not be fully upgraded, plus now one
of the processors is toast...

It still runs iTunes, iPhoto, and Firefox
just fine with only one processor but it
is choppy when playing HD GoPro.

So I am considering two ideas:

A) buy a used Mac G5 for $350 online
move my Ram and extra hard drive
to the newer machine, use older G5
for parts, plus the new machine
should have a slightly newer OS

B) buy a new iMac with extra Ram
and sell all of my existing G5 stuff

Primary computer uses are simple:
Word, Excel, Photos, iTunes, plus
some occasional video editing.

Thanks in advance for good advice.

Peace,
~Tom

Re: [GreenMachine] Mac Advice Please
buy a new one and sell the existing. my parents have a G5 from 2003 that is still fast as hell but they will be selling it for parts most likely (few hundred $$$) and are buying a brand new iMac!!!

If you do a lot of video work look into Thunderbolt.

Tom, your pre-intel chp is the problem. Also the reason you're stuck at 10.3.9...

Any g5 will have this problem.

Go for the iMac, or a mini.. A new macro is probably overkill unless you have money to burn..

Feel free to call me if you like. Hope all is well...

10.5.8 is as far as you can go with a pre-Intel chip but that may not solve your problem

I sent Mega Macs an email...
Below is their reply.

iMac with a big screen and extra RAM
would run about $1700 and do more
tricks than I need, but be good for
several years.

The G5 route would cost $400 to $500
and provide me with a fast machine,
sure the OS will be 10.4 or 10.5 but
honestly I wish I could just have my
old G5 working like it did in 2004.

I fucking hate the computer industry Unsure

Our G5s typically have 10.4 or 10.5 loaded, depending on what we had in stock at the time of receipt. If you need a specific OS, we can accommodate that as well. They do come loaded with iTunes, however the rest of the software in question is part of the iLife suite, which is not preloaded on these machines. When we purchase systems we wipe them clean and install a fresh OS from a retail disc, which does not come with iLife. We do have iLife '09 for sale however. If you have the Hard Drives and RAM, you may be better off using those parts to "soup up" a G5 from us and get a very nice machine. We also have faster models (2.0Ghz, 2.3Ghz and 2.5Ghz) ready to go that will support all your parts. Just let me know what you are looking for and we will get you set! Regarding you desire to sell us your system, we are not actually purchasing G5s if they have Processor or Logic Board failures, we may be able to give you a very small amount in trade, however the processors in the G5s typically cost more than we can sell the systems for.

is this some new Apple policy now?

FWIW
I bought a used G5 off ebay for
$125 + $45 shippin' = $170 total.

This will give me 2 processors and
a few other parts to keep my unit
running for a little while longer...

Success
The extra G5 I bought had 2 good processors.
I removed one and installed it into my Mac.

Required making a tool, took an allen key,
broke off the L part, duct taped it to a metal
coat hanger, so I could turn allen screws from
8 inches away.

Afterwards it would boot but the fans would
run really loud and eventually it'd freeze up.

Took to the local Apple repair guys, who are
now very familiar with me, Sky-Frogs, etc.
for free they ran some 'fan calibration'
program and my G5 is back running great!

DO any of you Mac peeps need RAM?
Super drive? Fans? An Aluminum Case?
