I was in Moab that day but I was just jumping off tombstone winds were picking up a bit but I don't know if that was the problem.

Looked like pilot error to me; whoever it was allowed the wing to overfly them. Wing behaviour possibly caused as a result of a change in pressure / downdraft immediately behind the shear cliff edge?

im a NOOB speedflyer and BASE jumper as well. but you can clearly see how his wing is flying forward of him, especially after he takes a step down that small ridge thats about 5-10 feet from the exit point. put it in slow motion and watch how far ahead of the pilot the nose cells are, which end up rolling forward and collapsing the wing. this dude is lucky that thing re-pressurized

i find it hilarious that so many people have their panties in a wad about the video being mislabeled a BASE jump.

It's because they stood straight up as they approached the cliff edge. For that type of launch, you need to stay in "torpedo" mode until you are in the air.

...and watching the video again... they were never leaning forward enough for the entire launch *and* they were at like half brakes. That is not how you launch at all.

A BASE jump requires jumping with a closed container. OK to static line, DB or whatever, but no pull offs, tards or even McConkey's. Dragging an open canopy off a cliff is paragliding or parapont in Europe, but it's not a BASE jump.

Oh, how very ignorant of me. My apologies. I tend to call everything from jumping rope to stealing bases in little league a BASE jump. BTW, I didn't really care if this guy called it a BASE jump or not, I was just making a joke. But thanks for the correction.

I have done more speed-wing cliff launches than most pilots out there.

THIS "INCIDENT":

I know the pilot, he is a good guy. Not super experienced but not a muppet either. (like I originally thought when I saw the video).

One factor people are not seeing here is that this is a modified speed glider, there is semi-rigid structure in the wing, IMO it is not the way to build any kind of 'fly frame' (obviously), but I consider the pilot here to be a test pilot. The modifications may or may not have contributed to this 'incident'.


SHORT of the modified glider, there were several factors.

1-NO HALF ASSED LAUNCHES. Once you commit to the launch (on a cliff launch, whenever you start moving) you go 110% until you are well off the ground. Tis launch is one of the easiest cliff launches out there, but it has a little bit of uneven terrain. Either way, go 110%. probably the most important thing.

2-The glider (007 OZONE Bullet 10m) is notorious for it's less forgiving aerodynamics. The pilot could have given a little more brake input during launch run to allow the AOA to stay high enough to avoid a frontal, The modification may have been an issue there.

3-Cliff rotor. It did not look like there was more than a kt or two of wind, but I was not there. Either way, a minimal cliff rotor can be plowed through if done correctly.

The pilot rode it out like a rock star.


MOST IMPORTANTLY, muppets: this is not skydiving. this is not BASE jumping. Cliff launching speed gliders is significantly more dangerous and technical than your average Moab BASE jump. A few of the BEST speed glider pilots (some of the ones who design and test the gliders) have died on cliff launches. Don't be a muppet, get small canopy flight time skydiving, take paragliding lessons.

Concur with Cal. Especially on point 2, old Ozone 10m's suck ass...

No identifiable stall point, tendency to over-twitch, ZERO flex in the tail of the airfoil, and unstable on flat T/O's due to overly short brake range which makes it hard to determine the right amount of pressure in the wing before stepping off.

I am not making excuses for the pilot; however, it is easy to see this happening to anyone. Trying to manage all this in a glider while worrying about a short cliff launch is NOT EASY. I give him props for not dying.

You're right, we begin to relax the rules in the mid 80's for newbies to allow DB's as long as the canopy was still packed, not already open. Nevertheless, freefall is always more fun so have fun out there but try not to bouce. Gives us a bad name

Idk man, I would say the irresponsibility was on the part of the pilot, not the previous owner or vendor. Lets all be responsible for ourselves.

The "Pre-TARD"

"Pre" is for "pre-inflated," of course... this is when you start to do a cliff launch, but in the last millisecond decide to do a TARD instead and expertly fly the canopy onto your head. Ninja reflexes are mandatory.
