Osprey packs as stealth stash bags?
Last season i saw a few Norgies running what looked like lightweight Osprey packs with removable hip belts for stash bags.

Some jumps here in Australia could definitely benefit from having a pack and not a visible stash bag for the sake of disguising its contents.

Any exact info on the model type and size of the pack would be excellent and much appreciated by the Australian BASE community.

Cheers, Jesse.

Not sure if this is it but its a pretty good idea for larger loads. Plus it (appears to) looks like a pretty normal backpack at first glance.

I think you may of been seeing GoLite packs, http://www.golite.com/...ackcountry-ultralite. Which have been discussed here before. I could be mistaken though. If you can find an 2008 model Jam or Pinnacle, even better.

+1. GoLite packs are great stealth stash bags.

Cool, thanks guys.

What GoLite model do you recommend? And, importantly, how small do they pack down when you jump and is there anything specific (remove waist belt etc) that you do?

Cheers,

Jesse.

I own a Golite Jam2 but I'm in the market for a new one. The reason being it is too small. Jam2 can comfortably hold my 265 Troll, a tracking suit and a helmet but trying to pack into it a V4, rig, helmet, 2l of water, weatherproof clothing and some food just doesn't work anymore. I would definitely look into the Pinnacle from the Golite lineup. The a are very nice to carry though and work super good. They also apck reasonably small once empty so they are pretty compftarble to jump down under suit as well.

+1 on Golite Pinnacle, naturally the foam backpad gets removed. I think I paid about $60 on sale.

how easy is it to pack up the pinnacle or the jam and jump it down?

i paid $80, but they are super hard to find the old one now, the new one kind of sucks b/c it has all that spacer foam that you cannot remove

lowcountrybase

My Jam2 I can stuff into a cargo pocket, but i usually just wear it underneath my outer layer. The pinnacle has to be worn underneath your clothes, it is not small enough to place in a large BDU style cargo pocket. Reason the 2008 model pinnacle and Jams are true ultralight packs; no spacer foam, no waist belt pockets.

Another ultralight pack company, no experience with them though.

Pinnacle is tight width-wise but I get a Gargoyle/Troll 265/V-2 in plus a helmet, 3-pint H2O bag, jacket and small items in it. The Jam is shorter but the same cross section.

Easily fits on my back or front under the V-2, I've also smooshed it under a jacket on SD jumps. My harness and wingsuit are sized loose to make wearing a pack or winter clothes easy.

I don't know about the newer models but the first thing I did was remove the foam backpad. I've made a few day hikes with the pack, it's holding up well.

A friend uses the Starlite from Six Moon Designs as a stash bag and speaks very highly of it. I had it at my place to take a look at it (since I said I'm in the market for a new stash bag) and it looks very good as well.

I am retired from BASE now so my new hobbie over the last few years has been ultralight backpacking. I wish I knew back then what I know now (re gear) while doing some of the long haul hikes in Norway.

Figured I'd share some of what I've learned.

Like BASE gear, there is no "best" peice of equ. in the ultralight bags. Figure out what works "best" for you and go w/ it.

I've borrowed a couple different models (dont remember which ones) of GoLite and they make a great bag. I agree with others in that having the removable back padding should be standard in UL bags.

I currently own and use the shit out of the Six Moon Designs Swift. Ive got literally 100s of miles on it, and with my BASE exp. know it would work great as an "under-your-rig-stash-bag". Very comfy with loads up to 30-35lbs.

Here are some companies that are making great UL gear. I've seen/tried on/used, all these brands and they make good stuff. Give them a call and explain your wants/needs....they all make custom gear.

Cuben Fiber is the shit, the Zero model would work sweet for BASE, ultra lightweight strong, and water proof
