GPS FOR BASE JUMPING
Hi,

I'm looking for an outdoor gps to keep the exit base points, the way and if it's possible to use during my wingsuits flights.

Has the flysight a normal outdoor gps characterisitcs or it's only valid for wingsuit flights.

Can anybody recommend me a good toy for that?

Thanks!!!

How would one use a GPS during a wing suit flight?

the flysight gps has a real time audible tone to help you find max glide angle.

Re: [kanta] GPS FOR BASE JUMPING
In theory you could turn FlySight on at the start of the hike and record all of the hike to the exit, they turn it on an off just before exit to get a separate track of the jump. The files can be converted and loaded to GoogleEarth so you can see them. You would have a record of the exit point & the way. Not sure how many hours of continuous use the battery will last, you might want to check if you're doing really long hikes.

What it won't do is guide you along a previously saved trail. There is no display on the FlySight, and no option to load previously saved tracks on the device itself. There are no buttons on the device, just an on-off switch.

Not using the gps during the flight...

Only keep in the pocket to see the altitudes, speed, trajectory, glide performance after the jump...

I have no information about gps but i want to start using one so i would apreciate any information on wich one can be usefull for hiking and wingsuit flights if it's posible.

Many thanks.

I think you'll find that a GPS that is well suited for hiking is not great for logging Wingsuit Flights and vice-versa.

The Flysight was designed specifically to fit the needs of wingsuit and parachute users. The chip-set, configuration, frequency of logging and method for calculating speeds works very well for our purpose.

For hiking you want something like a Garmin eTrex.

Many thanks,

Very useful information!!!

Maybe i will have to buy the flysight for the jumps and a garmin gps for the waypoints Separately!!!

Used the flysight last year for a few jumps.
The audible tone can be set to indicate how close you get to a vertical or horizontal speed or a specific glide ratio.
Probably really useful when you're flying a new suit.

The Suunto X10 GPS watch is pretty sweet for tracking Hikes or just about anything. you can leave it on and just add a waypoint at the exit point to mark it. you can even leave it on for the jump but it wont keep track of the wingsuit flight like a Flysight will.

the other cool thing about the X10 is it can detect sudden drops in pressure essentially warning you of any changing weather coming your way.

it can be exported to google earth as well.

Others have summed it up pretty well, but I thought I'd add my 1.5 cents... I've been taking a flysight with me on a lot of speed flights recently and have found that it works like a charm as a GPS you just turn on and toss in your pocket, too. If I were logging exit points, I'd just pick that off of the start of the flysight track myself...

As others have pointed out, every GPS is built with a model, so I expect that the flysight would work less nicely for a hike. For a stationary fix on the exit, though, I expect it'd work as well as anything.

Garmin Forerunner 405 - You can save waypoints and name them on a sleek wristwatch. I love it.

I have these for skiing and I wasn't to impressed with them. The HUD makes it impossible to see down out of the right eye and the peripheral vision is terrible. They pinch my nose too. Great idea though. The software is amazing.
