Drugs illegal in Norway
Just want to give a heads up for the season. Drugs is Illegal in Norway. The media, locals, and police know there is some drugs among the jumpers arriving Romsdalen. So to prevent a big dramatic bust during the summer, just do not pretend it is not illegal.

A Journalist and a camping owner have rised this issue, and to believe the police do not know what´s going on, is just stupid.

Could someone make this sticky for awhile?
Have a safe, bounce and bust free summer.

Norway... is f'in hilarious!

Back in '07, I spent 6 weeks in Lysebotn. I was, NOT, adjusting well to the weather (rain and clouds 90% of the trip and it changed every 20min) and I had some pretty bad headaches because of it.

I took the ferry back to Stavanger, to get some caffeine pills.

Because of the Ferry setup... I did not want to come back, I had everything I needed. I just needed Caffeine.

So... I pick up two bottles of Fenazon-Koffein... and they tell me you can only buy one at a time. What...What? Why...?

I had to argue with the pharmacist for over 10 minutes, about Caffeine!

Why? "Because people abuse Caffeine." Laugh

Are you kidding me? I was like, "Sir, not only am I an EMT-Intermediate and work in an ER, but seriously... do you really expect me to abuse, Caffeine?" So I had to go through all my medical experience, explain I am a BASE jumper and can't come back, that I'm not sleeping well and talked about the patho of headaches/migraines and the benefits of caffeine.

Told him, I can go buy 20 sodas and chug them right here and get more caffeine than is even in these two bottles. But I really don't think the massive sugar rush will help my headache(s)...

Finally... after going to the back room and then coming back out, he allows me to purchase two bottles.

Hilarious... (after the fact.)

Though, then come to find out... that Phenacetin, the other medication, makes me feel like SHIT!

They had no issues with the pain medication part of it... just the Caffeine. Cause I did ask if they had, just Caffeine... they didn't.

That too is weird... combing a stimulant and an analgesic. WTF... Crazy

So...

If I move to Cali, I can legally purchase Buds and THC products, but I can't BASE.

In Norway, I can BASE... but THC and Caffeine, ARE PROBLEMATIC.

Hilarious.

Common Sense... where oh where, have you gone?

The Norwegian attitude (and laws) towards drugs can seem weird to people visiting. The logic behind this is: "if you need loads of caffeine pills to get through the day then you should rather change your lifestyle than eating more pills". Norwegian are basically very scared of ending up with a drug system like in the US where eating pills are the solution to all your problems. I do agree that it can be a bit extreme in that sense over here. A Dr would of course given you the caffeine pills without any problems as you needed them for medical reasons.

Re: [johenrik] Drugs illegal in Norway
I understand what you are saying, and correct me if you feel I am wrong...

But, doesn’t that logic (line of thinking) negate common sense and personal responsibly?

Coffee is sold freely in Norway, is it not? Didn’t purchase any while I was there, but I did consume carbonated beverages and chocolate... both of which contain caffeine. Caffeine pills contain (typically) 100-200mg per pill.

What is the difference between drinking several cups of coffee back to back (or making strong coffee) and taking a caffeine pill to acquire the same dose and desired therapeutic effect?

In the US (or Virginia at least), Pseudoephedrine is sold in a similar way as caffeine pills are in Norway, because of its use in the manufacturing of Methamphetamine.
I can only purchase one box at a time and it is kept behind the counter. Makes a little more sense... but I don’t agree with it.

Crack is illegal in both our countries. Nor can one buy any food products with crack in it. Yummy “Cracky Snacks” anyone?! Great for long hikes!

Yet caffeine is legal... and is, in food products. So, why would utilizing its beneficial effects (additionally: coffee and dark chocolate contain antioxidants) in pill form lead to the thought that someone “needs loads of caffeine pills to get through the day”? And it has many more uses, than just keeping ya awake... (and headaches)

What if an individual just hates the taste of coffee? Or doesn’t want the sugar in caffeinated beverages or the sugar substitutes in “sugar-free” versions? Same with chocolate... makes ya fat!

Utilizing caffeine pills does not lead to abuse, the need for lifestyle changes to be made, nor contributes to a pill popping mentality. Does taking a pill (H2 Blocker) for acid reflux add to that mentality also? Equally, someone who does like coffee, may not even drink it everyday... as with someone who uses caffeine pills.

Now... if you want to talk about the “take a pill solve your problems” mentality in the United States... we would need to speak specifically, about the field of Psychiatry.

This shit is a trip! I about stroked out from laughing when I watched it again as an adult... and realized it was just caffeine.

Drugs illegal in Norway
WE have great common sense role models in the States too! Personal Favorite:

“I'm like, Che Guevara with bling on, I'm complex” ... Oooh, really, Jay-Z?

That’s Interesting... considering (from his own diaries):

“The Negro is indolent and lazy, and spends his money on frivolities” - Che

Hm, that doesn’t make much sense either...

But no, no, no, don’t pay any attention to that. Just think about Giselle. (Attached) Ah yes... lovely Giselle. Pay no attention to what is on the bikini she is wearing... just imagine it on the floor and she in your bed... Mmm, Giselle. Giggity Goo!

Or, Carlos Santa... wearing a Che t-shirt at the 2005 Oscars. Showing off an image of a regime that made it a criminal offense, to listen to Carlos Santa music...

Yup, Makes Perfect Sense!

I went into work one night... and spoke with Dr. P. An amazing Emergency Physician, who is in his lower 60’s. A Cuban immigrant and a literal, Renaissance Man.

“Hey Dr. P! Do you mind if I do a little word association with you? Just say the first thing that comes to mind.” With a puzzled look, “Ok...”

Che Guevara ... “MURDERER!” he sharply replied.

“Thanks Dr. P!”

Yet another example... of how little WE know about history.

All while our country remains manipulated, by "Reefer Madness" and controlled by illegal federal drug laws.

But... back to the OPs:

In reply to:
“So to prevent a big dramatic bust during the summer, just do not pretend it is not illegal.”

Exactly... simply, don’t be a Jackass. Think... high bust risk jump... sshhh

In reply to:
“It is illegal, and one day we will have a bust that will not look to good on our record!”

How do you see such a bust occurring? Can law enforcement go into someone’s tent, “without probable cause?” Would one not have to be seen using?

Why would it be, Big and Dramatic?

In reply to:
“so they do not have to make a shame on themselves making a piss test with a little scared one.”

Can law enforcement actually make you take a piss test?

Yes the police can bust you in your tent, and also make you piss. It will be all over the media in Norway telling how this adrenalin junkies also are heavy addicted to illegal Narcotics. They can walk onto the campground and just start search tents?

Re: [dmcoco84] Drugs illegal in Norway
What I have tried to explain, is when a lot of information about a surten group using drugs, and involves local people, or do not care about they know, it will be a planned action against this group, just to let them know they know. Was this better?
Shortcut
Re: [dmcoco84] Drugs illegal in Norway
In reply to:

No they cant. The police are allowed to check your pockets, but can't do searching without probable cause. They are not allowed to do drug tests of you without a court order as long as you are not the driver of a motor vehicle. Although if people for years have been complaining to the police about drug use in a small group of people I can immagine that a court order for testing us and searching tents might be given once to see if the rumors are true.
They can also walk around the tents with a dog and if the dog marks outside a tent I would guess that is enough for "probable cause". Those tents aren't exactly smell proof.

Quite the double standards going on in this place.
I might not get the jargon just quite yet, but for a lurking BASE-reader one day reading article after article and post after post about how no-one (especially new guys) should BASE, and then coming to this.. It's a nice balance at least ;)
No offense intended, and I'm probably writing my next post in around two years after enjoying skydiving and lurking quite a bit more. So.. c'ya :)
Shortcut
Re: [rtardart] Drugs illegal in Norway
It is no double standard, it is a gentle warning about the law in Norway. If you visit, and do not like tickets or trouble with the police, behave. On the other side, we have massive support from the locals, but we might loose some respect if we reach the point with a bust and headlines in the news.

I believe you guys do not know how much some have been working too gaining some respect around the world, and trying to preserve sites and locations. Im not going to try to convince you.
Shortcut
Re: [434] Drugs illegal in Norway
I think you might have misunderstood my point a bit, I was just curious why people engaging in the "most dangerous sport in the world", already filled to the brim with adrenalin would even consider taking drugs. But I do also realize that I don't know what drugs you're talking about..
I just know from own experiences that catching that penny dropping from the table rather than picking it up from the floor is not made easier by a joint or two :)

But as I have no intention of criticizing anyone I don't know for something I don't understand, I will stop here. People should do what they want as long as they don't fuck up for others as I understand that the point of the post was.

Takk beklager forsinkelsen

Cool, as I figured... very similar to the laws in the states.

In reply to:
Although if people for years have been complaining to the police about drug use in a small group of people I can immagine that a court order for testing us and searching tents might be given once to see if the rumors are true.

Understandable... however, I’d be shocked if a court order of that nature could include tourists for testing (a search, possible). But, if that were indeed to happen... I’d simply refuse and request contact with my embassy, and say nothing more.
For locals... yeah, different story.

Dogs... oh yeah, an alert is definitely probable cause! Though in most states, with the search of a vehicle after a traffic stop and K-9, the car is first impounded and a search warrant is obtained shortly after. Very reasonable to foresee them walking onto a campground with a specific court order for a K-9 search, if there has been that much uproar.

However, for those who are, meticulous... that concern can be pretty easily handled.

Also, word to the wise: daily Ibuprofen usage in high doses, WILL, create a false positive.

I likely saved a woman’s job about two years ago. White female, mid 40’s... came in with suicidal ideations, no plan. She had pinged for a random UDS, came up positive for thc and was fired (after a second positive retest). Middle management type job... professional field. Did her IV... chatted a bit. Swore she did not use and did not understand how this was possible. I came back after a bit, perplexed... took a look at her chart. She was taking over 800mg per day... for a somewhat recent back injury.

Informed the Attending, who had never heard of that occurrence... so, he let me deliver the good news.

After that stress... she probably needed a joint! Tongue

P.S - My smellveggen waterfall broken ankle, still hurts like a bastard!

From own experiences meaning that I might have indulged in a zip or two of puff puff but so far have no experience of BASE.

I just figured I wouldn't want to jump from anything within a week of having smoked seen as how lazy I become..
But as you say, you don't find it harder catching the penny.. I do. So I suppose it comes down to how one reacts to whatever one chooses to consume.

Bah I thought you would have to be pretty rich to BASE anyway and therefore be able to enjoy a line now and then to heighten the senses for optimal enjoyment of the jump.

I don't know about that....

I'd definitely agree it makes a person more prone to distraction, but it doesn't affect reaction time. Alcohol does... its a CNS depressant. Puff Puff is a psycho stimulant.

FYI
Pot hangovers, flash backs, and space outs
are a function of experience, so young and
or novice users are more likely to be affected
in unexpected ways than seasoned pros.

For example - smoking tobacco can cause
non-smokers to not only cough but also
need to shit, while veteran's of the devil's
weed simply get bad breath and cancer.

Let me know if anyone wants to discuss
sugar, corn-syrup, or cell-hone addiction.

That’s not a hangover... and if you feel that way, I doubt it is from weed. If that were said about ecstasy, minus hours of continuous physical activity, that would make much more sense from the Serotonin dump.

Marijuana is a Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor.

Never heard of it. Can’t find much on them either.

Tobacco... I don't think that’s really a good example. Coughing is obviously normal, its poison, unless pure tobacco and vaporized... and so is needing to shit. Excretion is a parasympathetic function. Nicotine acts directly on parasympathetic receptors.

Sugar addiction... is a related to the opioid release. Just like chocolate...

I’d like to see another LaGuardia Report. Aside from recognizing the unconstitutional Federal Drug laws... it is ridiculous that Marijuana is schedule I.

That's reasonable in the sense of its analgesic effects... but not its anti-inflammatory effects. And pain is often a result of inflammation.
