Utah or Idaho?
Hey guys,

If anyone needs a ground crew hand around Utah I would be glad to help out. I am trying to slowly get into base jumping and ultimately would like to ski base. Been big mountain skiing for a while now and I have always been intrigued by ski base. I understand you have to crawl before you walk and breathe before you crawl so it would be cool if anyone doing some jumps would let me watch and learn. Thanks for the read, cheers.

maybe l look like an asshole, but i know a lot of people wont talk to you unless you have a good amount of skydiving experience or other parachuting experience. what is your experience level?

good luck with your quest, but Jbag makes a good point.

not every BASE jumper is a wonderful, kind soul that will take any newbie along. crews can be tight knit and not welcome new faces. BASE can also involve minor crimes such as trespassing.

thus, I always recommend that folks like you make sure you bring something to the table. make an effort to contribute so the locals will be motivated to include you.

this frequently involves just hanging out at the local drop zone becoming friendly with folks.

at least you seem to have a solid attitude and realize it will probably take time. (not everyone understands this.)

Totally, I understand it's tight knit. May be the naiveness talking but it seems a lot like the big mountain ski industry. I know I won't take anyone out into the backcountry with me that I wouldn't trust to save my life. Because when it comes down to it, that may happen one time. I can understand how a newbie could mess up a lot of things including the guilt that comes with messing up under someone's watch and possibly ruining a DZ location.

I fully expect people to be a little bit calloused at first. That's to save their own interests. I'm just looking for someone who needs some help on the ground and to let me watch how this awesome sport is set up/executed.

Thanks for the read guys.

while I don't understand the Ski world, it appears you have a better attitude than most.

I hope other prospects read this and show similar understanding!

"If anyone needs a ground crew hand around Utah"........

Last time I checked Utah was a fairly large state in the Union. You may want to be a bit more specific on your location. I can tell you there is a very active DZ just outside of Salt Lake Shitty, hang around there long enough and you're bound to run into some basehumpers.

Also your title has Idaho? in it. I assume you've researched a very popular "jumping spot" in that great state? There are usually a few people basehumping in that "spot" year round.

Good Luck.

Any chance you want to spill the beans on the location near SLC? I do live in SLC 8 months of the year (all summer).

Yeah for Idaho I am talking about the popular spot you are referring to. Mainly I said UT and ID because I am willing to drive to meet people who are willing to let me watch, hang out, and help if needed.

Although I'm sure you're going to take this as an abrasive dick-head comment. I find myself wondering that if you do a lot big mountain skiing in Utah, how you have managed not to meet any skiing base jumpers.

That is unless Beaver is your home mountain. I would think it would be damn near impossible to be a competent big mountain skier in the SLC area and not have made acquantinces with at least 2 or more skier/jumpers.

I was in Japan for this season so it was a bit hard to meet people in SLC. I have met quite a few people but none that ski base. Guess stranger things have happened though Crazy

Thanks man, I don't have my own gear yet, just been skydiving trying to get canopy skills down. Hopefully when I get my own stuff in the future I will be able to take you up on that. For now I am just reading up and quietly observing in the shadows Angelic

Lurk (and jump) at the local dropzones, go up to Twin, or just hang out at the Point. Lotsa jumpers in this area for sure and all the ones I've met are some of the nicest people around. Smile
