Re: [halorob] Bridge day on Greenie?
The big Greenie is now undergoing a major 74 millon dollar seismic rehab that will also add the 2 center lanes in the middle that were always missing for a total of 4 lanes. Right now the southern side of the bridge is closed to the public but the north side is open to pedestrians.
The sad part is a 2 foot high mesh fence (still climbable) was added to the top of the 4 foot railing since a May 2011 suicide. As part of the rehab, the fence will eventually become a more permanent one 6.5 feet high but some groups are pushing for 8 feet with an inward curve to prevent suicides which now total 59 since the span opened or about 2 a year on average. So if you want to get in an easy jump, now is the time to do it.
As for a BASE event, it might be best to have it sometime in the next year or two as I would wonder how it would go over with public to have BASE jumpers having to climb some kind of temporary 8 foot high platform that would have to be created for the event and the mixed messages it might send to the taxpayers who just got a big bill for an expensive fence meant to discourage jumpers even if BASE jumpers are doing it for fun and not to end their lives.
I would also imagine the fence might make it difficult to view the falling BASE jumpers if you can't look down and these events are always green lighted more for the entertainment of the viewing public then the BASE jumpers themselves.
