MiniDV and Mac
Any special cords, software, ect... needed for taking video from HD/miniDV into a Mac Pro?

Sony Camcorder, HC-5

Thanks in advance.

Re: [BASE1361] MiniDVD and Mac
Recent MacBook Pros have both Firewire and USB connectivity so getting the actual video files from the camera to the MacBook shouldn't be a problem.

Getting the files into something like iMovie (so you can edit them) can be more challenging. I use iSkysoft Video Converter which will convert your 'raw' camera files into multiple formats like mp4 which can then be imported into iMovie or put directly onto an iPhone etc.

Re: [BASE1361] MiniDVD and Mac
My Mac is G5 of circa 2003 so I know
things have changed, to iMovie plus
added complication of HD & codecs.

However, USB is a non-starter in my
opinion, Firewire is the way to go!!

I use a "1394" 4-pin to 6-pin firewire,
the 4-pin fits into my Sony PC-101
and the 6-pin plugs right into the
front of my machine.

FYI - my friend with a newer Mac had to
buy a different model saying mine was
a 600 and his was an 800... I think.

Firewire cables at Best Buy are pricey.
Same thing online is usually cheaper.

Good Luck!

Re: [GarethW] MiniDVD and Mac
If you import from your Sony directly into iMovie it should convert automatically. This is a bit time consuming but prob the easiest way.

I tried iSkysoft to convert the RAW mts files but had quality issues. I prefer to use Toast Titanium when dealing with raw mts. (sony avchd shell)

Bump,

I meant MiniDV and NOT miniDVD.

another question:

is the video from the Memory stick pro as high quality as the miniDV? or is it just for stills with the HC-5

Re: [BASE1361] MiniDV and Mac
the quality is not media defendant - but rather recording format/device dependent. So two AVCHD camcorders using an identical sensor and lens should in theory produce an identical video even if recorded on different media.
