Non-fatal total
From the russian base board, brief factual translation of an accident on 07.03.11:

160m powerline tower. Front loop, stowed, pulled too soon (standing up) and into crosswind, bridle went under arm and remained there till impact. Container opened, but nothing inflated, lines still stowed in the rubber band on a tailpocket. Hit soft deep snow at 7 seconds.

Unconscious for 2 minutes. Broken back and other lesser injuries. Presently in the hospital, speaking to his friends on the phone.

I knew a Russian would beat Jeb's landing without a rig project.

On a serious note, miracles do happen - thank who or whatever you believe in that he survived. All the best of luck with recovery.

On a lesson note - the last fatal in Australia was the same (I know it was a backloop - but since it is the land downunder you reverse it for the northern hemisphere and it therefore becomes the same!).

Take Care Doing Aerials out there folks!

This was not a total (me being wise ass) but a PC in tow.

About Jeb, this guy had a rig Wink

hi Yuri,

glad he survived!

Since nobody has asked it yet... what body position did he have when he hit the snow?

No idea. Trying to get the footage from the boys for the carnage tape, but they're being soft cunts for now. We will know more in a bit.

Re: [outrager] Non-fatal total
How deep was the snow? They might be on to something you know....
Shortcut
Re: [gauleyguide] Non-fatal total
Deep of snow was about 1-1.2m.
Shortcut
Re: [gauleyguide] Non-fatal total
Good point. Although, is it really a base jump if you can survive a total? I'll sure as hell take the snow if I can get it!

Best of luck to the jumper for a fast recovery. I'm sure your bag of luck is empty, so I am sending you some of mine.

What size PC was he using? If he can land that then I figure that's the one I should stick with from here on out.

not the first time, either... during the russo-finnish war, the Russians experimented with dropping parachuteless paratroopers into snowbanks, though the drop altitude was much lower than 160 meters.

discontinued because the insertion casualties were too high.

anyway, great to hear that he lived through it with minimal injuries. Beer! (or vodka)\

You sure about that? Having lived near the eastern border most of my life I've heard a lot of stuff about Winter/Continuation war but that I haven't heard before.

I'm not as sure now as I was when I made the post! I checked a little and apparently there are multiple versions of this story, some with it happening during the Russo-Finnish war, others during the battle of Moscow, etc... so I don't know if it's true or a longstanding not-so-urban legend. Anyway, here's an interesting look at it.

Non-fatal total
Just yesterday heard a story about guy in Siberia (N/E of Russia), who was jumping military freefall with comrades (everybody was drunk like hell) and had total mal.

He was on terminal speed when he impacted big pile of snow (12+ meter high). These huge piles of snow were result of DZ LZ cleaning during whole winter. The guy was in tracking position and actually flew inside of the pile, not just fell vertically :)
He fully stopped inside of the snow pile when there barely were 2 meters left to the ground.

His friends saw the impact and thought that he was already dead. Searching for a body in such a huge pile was useless (night was coming and it started to freeze miserably).
So they left and went to one's hut, where they started to drink lots of vodka in memory of their good friend. Closer to the dusk, when everybody was already drunk as shit, this guy appeared at the doorway, still holding his canopy and with container on.
He was angry with them, because they thought he was dead and even didn't start to search for him :D
His front side of the body was totally bruised, but no bones were damaged :)

I have no idea was it real or just a legend.

I vote vodka-inspired legend.

It's possible (but highly unlikely) that the snow in Siberia is different from that in other parts of the world, but all of the snow I have ever been exposed to (Canada, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, etc.) freezes hard as hell within a couple hours of being disturbed and pushed/blown/moved into a pile. It becomes much more like a block of ice than like freshly fallen or undisturbed snow.

I'd rather take my chances with a meter of undisturbed snow vs. 12m of snow in a pile...

Through that link I found :

http://soviethammer.devhub.com/...t-luck-paratroopers/

which has a fairly extensive look on Soviet use of paratroopers in Second World war and prior. It also discusses the stories of dropping soldiers without parachutes and its seems all the stories are purely legends.

Re: [robinheid] Non-fatal total
I know of an non-fatal total incident from the 1980s. A jumper from Houston, Texas named John Jones jumped a 130 foot water tower. His direct bag holder dropped the bag. The bag was not secured. John fell the complete distance with only a closed direct bag above him. He hit hard ground. He did not brake any bones but he had terrible emotional problems after that presumably from a head injury despite not having a skull fracture.

Freaky shit happens . There was the guy in Moab that one year when I was there . Who pulled a borrowed Rig out of a trunk & he ran-off the Exit with a Field-Packed , locked-off Daisy-chained Streamer . He Burned-in on the Talus & everyone thought/assumed he was dead but about 20-minutes later someone saw his body twitch so they called Life Flight . & then he showed-up & he was walking around with a Cane 3 days latter .

Oh, Crater Nate. Funny thing is that a jumper from San Antonio called the Grim Leaper drove Crater Nate home. The same thing had happened to B. Grim the year before, so I called the crew of them the Crater crew.

I was wondering the exact same thing. If I saw that I would assume my buddy just died, but everyone knows the quickest way to help is to jump.
