Re: [jakee] Being scared out of BASE

In the UK the military's more likely to sponsor you than tell you to stop!
I remember when they would kick you out of every DZ in the UK if they found out you had done a BASE jump.
I was jumping so much that it was getting very routine. Then I had a son. So one day John Hoover and I go hit this big A that we did a bunch. All I had was a Sabre 150 (we were real smart), but the winds were OK. Plus it always opened straight.
180'd, flew right through the wires and landed on the other side. Then something happened. Hell, I was scared. Having a kid changed me.
Then later on I was up on El Cap. Haul bag got stuck right at dusk, and after much friggage, I had to rap down to free it, which involved a rope switchover in the dark with a headlamp. No biggie, but I just kind of looked around and asked myself what the hell was I doing up here? Hell, I got a kid to take care of.
So yeah. I got scared and quit. Only when I cared about my son. Kind of corny, but that happened to a bunch of us. Now he is 18, and after the summer in AK, I am headed to do a bunch of skydives to get current again and ease into BASE with all of the sweet gear. I already have some people who are gonna help me along.
Unlike all of the other climbers back then, I always skydived my ass off as well as BASE'd. I think it is good to be very current with the gear.
It is gonna be fun. At a young age, I never thought of dying, and at an older age, I really don't care that much. But I was always safe and would just go down if the wind or something wasn't right.
