Re: [Twoply] Help! Stuck in the Fla Keys with a rig!
Hey man, if the water is 72 or better, get a mask and snorkel and go for it. However, as far as BASE jumps in the Keys, one night in 1990, my brother Randy, Rick Payne and Joy and I were in Marathon Key fishing with a friend. After a full day of partying, the idea of the 300' freestander came up just about midnight. I went to bed, Randy and Payne went and did it. Both caught the outside climbing pegs with their front left end cells coming back from over the water, between trees and the tower. Both tore their end cells but landed OK. One other story from the same era, my brother had a young BASE jumper out at the reef on his sail boat where he used to live. They were going to climb and jump the 140' steel structure lighthouse marking Sombrero Key Reef, about 6 miles off shore from Marathon. We used to snorkel there. Well, Randy's rig opened before they got in the dinghy, but the young guy from Iowa, climbed the structure at dusk, jumped and landed fine in the water. Randy yelled from his boat that he should go ahead and swim back since he wouldn't want to know what's swimming around his feet on the reef at dusk. Anyway, so if you want to combine the best of the Keys, eat lobster or stone crab, rent a boat, go out to Sombrero lighthouse and make a BASE jump, then snorkel. Have fun.
