Re: [baseknut] Different Canopies for different jumps....
thanks. i looked at all of those in the past but I was hoping for more info on jumpers point of view. thanks for putting them in a group.. makes it easier to compare. like, i have variety of surfboards for different conditions and I use some of those surfboards for conditions they're not designed for. thats what i am looking for in regards to BASE canopies.

Re: [againsthumanity] Different Canopies for different jumps....
I only know the Atair canopies.

Basically, the Troll MDV is a good all rounder and can be used for anything from real low stuff to terminal.

The OSP is more suited to lower slider down stuff and tight landing areas (urban etc) but is also a good slider up canopy.

The Trango is a specific slider up canopy which is more suitable for terminal, wingsuit etc (I've not jumped a Trango)

All around canopies (vented):

Blackjack
FLik/FLik L Vtec
Troll MDV

All around canopies (unvented):

Ace
Seven
FOX
Mojo
FLik
Troll
Dagger

My experience has been that the FLik and Troll, in their unvented configurations, have poor enough slider down pressurization that I'd avoid solid, slider down objects on these two (unvented) canopies.

The Dagger is meant to be an all around canopy, but the cell pressurization when slider down is very poor, so I'd avoid using it on a solid object, or at any really low altitudes.

Terminal/tracking/wingsuit canopies:

Trango
Feather
FLik UL (ultralight)

Low/bad landing area canopies:

OSP
Rock Dragon

In my experience, the Rock Dragon has so little forward speed that jumping it in any wind at all (or with a distant landing area) can create real problems. I'd avoid using a Rock Dragon for those type of jumps.

If I was looking to build a quiver of canopies for a single jumper, I'd probably pick one wingform and stick to it through the range. For example, go with Troll MDV (all around), Trango (wingsuit) and OSP (low and slow). That way you get wings that fly relatively similarly.

The risk there is that you will start thinking that whichever brand you pick is "the one brand to rule them all" and will start telling everyone it's the best thing since sliced bread and that all the others suck, without ever having any real experience jumping the others. I can't count the number of jumpers I've met who had that sort of brand loyalty without ever having even tried any other manufacturer's gear.

I can still see the deleted post, but I can't recover it for other people to see.

Here's a copy of the text:

In reply to:
So, I see that many people have a quiver of canopies and I completely understand that different canopies have different opening characteristics, flight characteristics, and close quarter control characteristics just like in skygnaring, so my question is, can somebody give me like a list or even a partial list of the canopies in BASE and the style of jumping they are used for whether it be urban base, dirty low jumps, high obstacle landing area (limited glide canopies)? For instance, the rock dragon has fast opening characteristics and can handle deep braked approaches very well, so it would be good for low objects/sketchy landing areas. Thanks.

Completely Disagree. I have jumped the rock dragon in some very windy conditions, some I am not proud of, and while the forward speed is less than the flik (I have a flik of the same size), it is still fine for almost anything, just better in my opinion for tighter landing areas. But then again, There isn't a jump I'd do with my rock dragon, I wouldn't do with my Flik.

Some of these included decent flights to the LZ.

I really don't see the need for a "quiver" of rigs. Unless you really hate packing & have access to an object where you can do several jumps back to back, I would say that the max amount of rigs one would need would be 2. One for slider off stuff, & one for slider up stuff, make sure they are two different colors so you don't confuse them!Wink

Yeah, I just want like two canopies and one container/harness. My main point of this post was to learn about the different kinds of canopies and the types of jumps they could be used for

from a practical standpoint, would it not be best to first focus on which one is best for your objects? possibly focus on the leading candidates?

Oh i use my ACE with everything from the 335' wind turbines behind my house to Moab. I love it and has proven itself on every jump so far. I just want the knowledge, thats all. Not any more equipment that I already have

Re: [jdatc] Different Canopies for different jumps....
I agree. I have about 175 jumps total on two different Rock Dragons and have had no issues.
